Did you know? The correct syllabus is a combination of subject, level, examination year and candidate type. A tutor should use MOE’s teaching syllabus to understand the curriculum and SEAB’s relevant examination document to check assessed requirements. “Primary”, “SEC” or “G3” alone is not enough to choose the right materials.
For Primary 1–6, start with the MOE primary syllabus and the school’s current teaching programme. For PSLE, choose the correct subject and Standard, Foundation or applicable Higher Mother Tongue format for the examination year. For SEC, use the appropriate G1, G2 or G3 school-candidate directory and open the exact subject document.
Use this directory to find your question, then bring the subject title, level, year and recent work to a consultation. Tuition should turn those details into a focused learning plan. Not every subject has all three G levels, and an official syllabus listing does not mean every school or tuition provider offers that subject.

Choose the official syllabus route
| Subject route | What to check | Official directory |
|---|---|---|
| Primary languages and Mathematics | English, Mother Tongue and Mathematics; support should match the year and school sequence. | MOE primary subjects and syllabuses |
| Primary Science and broader learning | Science from Primary 3; also check Art, Music, PE, Social Studies and the school’s CCE programme. Wider learning is not a recommendation for tuition in every subject. | MOE primary subjects and syllabuses |
| PSLE subject formats | English, Mathematics, Science, Mother Tongue, listed non-Tamil Indian languages and applicable higher or Foundation subjects; use the actual examination year. | SEAB PSLE formats examined in 2026 |
| SEC English and languages | English, Mother Tongue and other listed languages or special programmes; check exact title and availability. | G1 · G2 · G3 |
| SEC Mathematics | Mathematics at the listed G levels; Additional Mathematics has separate G2 and G3 syllabuses. | G1 · G2 · G3 |
| SEC Science | G1 Science; listed G2 and G3 Science combinations; G3 Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Read the full combination title. | G1 · G2 · G3 |
| SEC Humanities and Literature | G2/G3 History, Geography, Literature and listed Humanities combinations. Literature in Chinese, Malay or Tamil and corresponding combinations appear in G3. | G2 · G3 |
| Creative and practical subjects | Art, Music, Design and Technology, Nutrition and Food Science, plus higher or specialist options where listed. Availability differs by level. | G1 · G2 · G3 |
| Computing, business and technical routes | Check Computing, Elements of Business Skills, Principles of Accounts, Business, Economics and Electronics against the directory for the offered level. | G1 · G2 · G3 |
| Applied and specialist subjects | Mobile Robotics, Smart Electrical Technology, Retail Operations, Biotechnology, Design Studies, Drama and Exercise and Sports Science: confirm level, school approval where required and assessment conditions. | G1 · G3 |
What should the tutor do after finding the document?
Read the objectives and assessment requirements, then compare them with the learner’s present work. Choose a teachable gap rather than copying the syllabus into a long homework list. If an answer fails because a key term was misunderstood, teach the term in context. If the student knows the idea but cannot apply it, vary the question while preserving the underlying relationship.
Different subjects need different evidence. English and Mother Tongue support can inspect meaning and expression. Mathematics support can inspect relationships and valid working. Science support can inspect concepts and explanations. Humanities support can inspect evidence and reasoning. Creative, practical and applied subjects need the relevant project, performance or supervised-task requirements checked separately.
Useful support can include teacher feedback, family routines, targeted tuition or specialist instruction. Confirm which subjects and levels a provider actually teaches. School curriculum guidance and an article explaining a subject should not be mistaken for a promise of a local class.
How do Posting Groups fit into the syllabus choice?
PG1, PG2 and PG3 concern secondary posting and initial subject-level guidance. G1, G2 and G3 describe the level of individual subjects. Obtain the school’s confirmed subject list before selecting tuition or examination materials. A student’s combination may include different subject levels.

How can parents check that tuition is aligned?
Ask the tutor to show the subject title, level, applicable year and source document. Then ask which skill the next lesson will teach and how a later unaided task will show improvement. For a proposed subject-level change, ask the school about its criteria and bridging arrangements before treating harder worksheets as proof of readiness.
The linked SEC directories cover 2027 school candidates. The PSLE formats link here covers 2026. Families preparing for another year should use the corresponding official information once available. Historical subject codes and older papers can be useful references, but should not silently replace current requirements.
