How Can G2 Computing Tuition Help My Child Use Relative and Absolute Cell References Correctly?

Three students in school uniforms work through open books at a classroom table, with textbooks and stationery nearby and study notes on the whiteboard behind them.

G2 Computing tuition can help a child use relative and absolute cell references by making them predict what should change when a formula is copied. If a row should move but a tax-rate cell must stay fixed, the references need different behaviour.

Did you know? Many spreadsheet errors are not calculation errors at all. The formula may be mathematically sensible in the first row, then silently point to the wrong cells after it is filled down.

Start with a tiny sheet: three item rows, one fixed rate and one copied formula. Ask your child to state the expected references before pressing fill. A useful tutor diagnoses whether the gap is spreadsheet notation, row-and-column movement or failure to check the resulting values.

Follow the formula, not the mouse

Use the worked sheet first for an immediate check. Use the syllabus section when deciding whether practice matches the 2027 G2 Computing course.

Check the K237 spreadsheet requirement

The 2027 SEAB G2 Computing syllabus, K237 includes spreadsheet formulas, automatic recalculation and the use of absolute and relative cell referencing. Spreadsheets are assessed in the lab-based Paper 2 alongside media software and programming.

K237 is listed as a new G2 syllabus for 2027. It has a written e-Examination paper and a lab-based paper. That does not mean every secondary school offers G2 Computing, so parents should confirm the school’s subject combination and current software arrangements.

The software may display references in the familiar A1 form, but the learning target is not memorising where to type a dollar sign. It is understanding which relationship should remain fixed when a formula is copied.

Find the reference that moved wrongly

Show the child a formula before and after copying. If =B2*C2 becomes =B3*C3 in the next row, both references moved relatively. That is useful when row 3 contains the next item’s price and quantity.

Now suppose the GST or service-rate value sits in F1 and must be used for every item. If a copied formula changes F1 to F2, the rate reference moved when it should have stayed fixed. The diagnostic question is: “Which input belongs to this row, and which input belongs to the whole sheet?”

A child who can add dollar signs by imitation may still fail when the layout changes. Ask them to explain the role of each cell before writing the formula.

Build a movement model

A relative reference is like an instruction based on position: “use the price two columns to my left”. When the formula moves down one row, the referenced row moves with it.

An absolute reference is like a pinned address. In $F$1, the column and row are fixed, so copying the formula does not move the reference away from the shared rate.

Before filling a formula, use a two-column prediction: should change and must stay. Put item price and quantity under “should change”; put the single shared rate under “must stay”. Then encode that reasoning in the formula.

Copy one formula safely

Imagine B2 contains a unit price of 12, C2 contains a quantity of 3 and F1 contains a rate of 0.09. In D2, use =B2*C2*(1+$F$1). The result is 39.24.

When copied to D3, the formula should become =B3*C3*(1+$F$1). B2 and C2 move to the next item row; F1 remains pinned. If the copied formula instead uses F2, it may multiply by a blank or unrelated cell and produce a misleading result.

Do not stop after seeing a number. Change the rate in F1 and check whether every total recalculates. Then change one item quantity and check whether only the related row changes. These small tests reveal whether the references represent the intended relationships.

Test independent spreadsheet control

Useful progress is visible when the child predicts the copied formula, chooses the fixed cell without prompting and tests the sheet with changed inputs. Speed alone is not enough; a fast fill handle can copy an error through an entire table.

Ask the tutor to use a fresh sheet with the shared value in a different location. If the child can rebuild the formula from the relationship rather than from remembered cell letters, the skill is transferring.

For broader preparation, read How Should G2 Computing Tuition Prepare My Child for the New 2027 SEC Syllabus? and the MOE and SEAB syllabus series directory.

Bring one spreadsheet file or screenshot to a consultation and ask the tutor to locate the first reference error. Confirm that G2 Computing is offered, which software is used and how independent lab work is checked. The immutable Clementi Secondary 1 Mathematics reference illustrates diagnosis and a three-pupil model for Mathematics; it does not establish Computing provision or identical lesson arrangements.
