Your child may freeze because rehearsed French is stored as a sequence, while an unexpected question requires listening, selecting an idea and rebuilding language in real time. Tuition can help by training flexible response moves—clarify, answer, justify, exemplify and adjust—rather than adding a longer memorised script.
Use a five-minute diagnostic. Ask one familiar question, then change one condition with “Et si…?” If your child repeats the prepared answer, falls silent or switches immediately to English, practise a response bridge such as “Je pense que…, parce que…” followed by one concrete example. The goal is communication, not instant perfection.
G3 French K370 is a distinct subject listed for 2027 and available in the October/November examination session. G3 refers to the subject level, not Posting Group 3. Confirm the student’s registration route, school or centre arrangements and the provider’s genuine French expertise before arranging support.

SECTION 1 OF 6
What exactly happens in the freeze?
A freeze can begin at listening, idea generation or language retrieval. One learner does not catch the question word. Another understands but cannot choose a view. A third has the idea yet searches for a perfect tense or noun and loses the turn.
- Listening gap: ask the learner to paraphrase the question in simple French or English.
- Idea gap: allow five seconds to choose one position and one example.
- Language gap: permit a simpler sentence that communicates clearly.
- Recovery gap: teach how to ask for repetition or rephrasing appropriately.
Record a short practice and identify the first breakdown. Correcting every accent or verb ending after the fact will not solve a listening gap that occurred before the child began speaking.
SECTION 2 OF 6
Which response bridge keeps the conversation moving?
A simple bridge is: answer, reason, example, qualification. For instance: “À mon avis, c’est utile parce que… Par exemple… Pourtant…” The precise content changes with the question, but the learner retains a route through the turn.
Practise bridges as functions, not fixed sentences. One phrase buys thinking time; another introduces a reason; another contrasts an idea; another repairs a misunderstanding. The child should be able to choose among them naturally.
If the examiner asks an unexpected future condition, the student can acknowledge it before rebuilding: “Dans ce cas, je changerais d’avis parce que…” The value lies in responding to the new condition rather than returning to the prepared speech.
Fluency here means forward movement with meaning. A short, relevant response that develops under follow-up is more useful than a long recital that ignores the question.
SECTION 3 OF 6
How should spontaneous French be practised?
Use question ladders. Begin with a factual question, move to preference, ask for a reason, introduce a counterexample, then change time or circumstance. The topic can remain familiar while the cognitive demand changes.
After each answer, choose only one repair target: unclear message, missing justification, tense control or limited vocabulary. The student repeats the idea in a different form, then faces a new question. That prevents practice from becoming an edited performance.
In a conditional 3-pax specialist lesson, one learner answers while the others identify the response move—not the exact words. Each student then receives a different follow-up, so listening and adaptation remain individual.
Confirm current French provision. A general English or Mother Tongue programme is not evidence of competence in K370 French oral preparation.
SECTION 4 OF 6
What does the 2027 K370 syllabus require?
SEAB’s 2027 G3 French syllabus K370 requires all candidates to take Writing, Reading, Listening and Oral papers. Writing and Reading are each weighted at 33%; Listening and Oral are each weighted at 17%. Dictionaries are not permitted, and the syllabus is available in October/November only.
The Oral paper lasts about ten minutes and contains a Topic Presentation/Conversation and a General Conversation, each about five minutes. Its communication mark scheme looks at understanding the examiner, immediacy of response and successful transmission of messages.
Higher performance includes responding to straightforward and unexpected questions, developing ideas and justifying points. The descriptors do not require native-speaker performance. They reward communication and language range at the assessed level.
The official 2027 G3 syllabus directory lists French as K370. Confirm the candidate’s actual entry and administrative arrangements with the school or examination centre. Official details checked 11 October 2026.
SECTION 5 OF 6
What should tuition not promise?
No tutor can predict the exact questions. Training only polished topic speeches may increase anxiety when the conversation moves elsewhere. The useful promise is a repeatable way to listen, respond and recover across changing prompts.
Do not chase complexity at the expense of meaning. The official communication descriptors distinguish clear transmission from ambiguous or incomplete messages. Accurate, manageable language is the platform from which range can grow.
Cultural examples should be relevant and understood by the learner, not decorative facts inserted to impress. The child must be able to explain every example and respond when the examiner asks why it matters.
SECTION 6 OF 6
How can a parent see independent oral progress?
Once a week, record three minutes of conversation. Ask one expected question and two follow-ups that alter the angle. Track whether the child catches the question, begins within a reasonable pause, gives a reason and stays in French.
Do not compare accent with a native speaker. Listen for clearer messages, more flexible reactions, useful past and future references, and fewer complete collapses after surprise.
Progress is real when the learner can repair: ask for clarification, restate an idea more simply or correct a misunderstood condition. If anxiety remains intense despite secure language, coordinate expectations with the school and protect manageable practice loads.
