For the 2027 SEC, G3 Art K347 and G3 Higher Art K348 share the same compulsory Visual Response and Portfolio papers, but Higher Art adds a separate compulsory Higher Art Project. Tuition should not treat Higher Art as simply “more difficult drawing”; it adds a sustained independent investigation and report with its own requirements.
Your next step is to confirm the exact registered title and K-code with the school, then compare the child’s current work against the right PDF. If the subject is Higher Art, ask how the school is organising Paper 3 and what outside support is permitted before any tutor comments on assessed work.
Did you know? Both routes value investigation, experimentation, visual communication and reflection. Strong drawing can help, but the student must also make purposeful choices, explain artistic intent and preserve the authenticity of every submitted work.

Which papers are the same, and which paper is additional?
| Requirement | G3 Art K347 | G3 Higher Art K348 |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Visual Response | 50%, 2 h 15 min | 50%, 2 h 15 min |
| Paper 2: Portfolio | 50%, 30 hours within 12 weeks | 50%, 30 hours within 12 weeks |
| Paper 3: Higher Art Project | Not part of K347 | Compulsory, independent, 12 weeks |
Paper 1 combines visual analysis with exploratory sketching. Paper 2 allows a maximum of 15 screens showing exploration and processes across at least three art forms and media, plus commentary on three works in no more than 800 words and under 10 A4-sized pages. The school internally assesses the Portfolio and the examination authority externally moderates it.
What does the Higher Art Project add?
For Paper 3, candidates receive three project questions and answer one. The project runs for about three months from February to April of the examination year. The submission is a 1,000–1,200 word report that may include research, studies, drawings, annotations and images.
This is not a second portfolio polished by an adult. The candidate must analyse the chosen task, develop a feasible solution, evaluate the process and outcome, and show a personal response. The work is completed under normal classroom-study conditions, with the school attesting that it is the candidate’s authentic work.
What should tuition diagnose before giving advice?
- Observation: can the learner notice and describe specific visual qualities?
- Investigation: do they gather relevant references and attribute sources?
- Experimentation: can they compare materials, techniques or compositions rather than repeat one safe solution?
- Intent: can they explain what they want the viewer to notice, think or feel?
- Reflection: can they evaluate a decision using evidence from the work?
A beautiful final image can hide a thin process; a busy sketchbook can hide weak selection. The tutor should identify the broken link before prescribing more work. For Higher Art, also distinguish weak research from weak visual development or weak evaluation, because Paper 3 asks the learner to connect all three.
What can a safe, non-assessed practice task look like?
Give the learner an unrelated practice prompt such as “a waiting place”. Ask for three thumbnail compositions: one using scale, one using empty space and one using repeated forms. The learner chooses the version that best supports an intended feeling and writes two sentences explaining why.
Next, change the audience or purpose. If the first image suggested isolation, could the same setting communicate anticipation? The child revises one visual decision and compares the effect. This teaches transfer: observe, experiment, choose, explain and revise. It does not supply ideas or wording for the school submission.
In a 3-pax class, each learner should pursue a different visual answer and defend an individual choice. The value comes from comparing reasoning, not from producing three versions of the tutor’s design.
Where should tuition stop?
A tutor may teach visual analysis, source attribution, experimentation and reflective language on separate practice. They should not choose the assessed concept, compose the artwork, rewrite commentary or manufacture process evidence. For Higher Art Paper 3, school instructions and supervision take priority; parents should ask the school what external feedback is allowed.
Useful independent-progress checks are simple: the learner creates a fresh variation without being shown what to draw, explains how a choice serves the intent, identifies a limitation and proposes the next experiment. If those actions disappear when prompting stops, the support has not yet become the student’s skill.
