Quick orientation for parents
Short answer: the tutor should follow the exact G3 Humanities entry confirmed by the school: K335 Social Studies with Geography, K336 Social Studies with History, or K337 Social Studies with Literature in English. Both components are compulsory and each contributes 50%.
Do this first: copy the exact subject title and code from the school’s subject-combination record, then place one recent Social Studies script beside one script from the elective component. Do not plan from the child’s Posting Group alone.

Which G3 Humanities combinations apply in 2027?
| Code | Compulsory components | 2027 paper times |
|---|---|---|
| K335 | Social Studies + Geography | 1h 45m + 1h 45m |
| K336 | Social Studies + History | 1h 45m + 1h 50m |
| K337 | Social Studies + Literature in English | 1h 45m + 1h 40m |
These details come from the official 2027 syllabuses for K335, K336 and K337. In every combination, Social Studies is 50% and the elective is 50%. For Social Studies, the paper contains a 35-mark source-based case study and a 15-mark structured-response section.
Schools determine which combinations they offer and which one a student takes. Confirm the actual school entry before buying materials or engaging a tutor.
Why is Posting Group not enough?
Posting Group describes the route used for admission to secondary school. G3 describes the subject level being studied. The precise Humanities combination then identifies the two assessed components. A child admitted through one Posting Group may take individual subjects at different levels when the school approves it, so “my child is in PG3” is not a complete tuition brief.
A useful first lesson therefore checks the code, the school’s current sequence and the child’s marked work. Otherwise a tutor can teach sound content for the wrong elective or spend nearly all the time on Social Studies while half the examination remains untouched.
Diagnose both components separately
Give each component its own error map. In Social Studies, separate source comprehension, inference, comparison, reliability or usefulness, evaluation and contextual knowledge. For the elective, use the demand that belongs to it: geographical data and explanation, historical evidence and causation, or literary interpretation supported by precise textual evidence.
The child may be strong in one half and fragile in the other. An overall grade hides that asymmetry. Two small diagnoses usually produce a better plan than repeating complete papers.
How should tuition change by combination?
- K335: connect Social Studies source reasoning with Geography’s interpretation of maps, graphs, photographs and patterns, while keeping each subject’s answer conventions distinct.
- K336: build a shared habit of testing evidence, then teach the different ways Social Studies and History frame provenance, purpose, context and judgment.
- K337: keep source-based reasoning for Social Studies alongside close reading, interpretation and evidence-led literary writing for Literature.
If the provider genuinely teaches the exact combination, a conditional three-student group can compare reasoning without cloning answers. Each student drafts a claim from the same evidence, challenges one unsupported leap in another response, and then rewrites independently. For Literature, assessed school work and prescribed-text instructions remain under the school’s direction.
What can a balanced week look like?
Imagine a K336 student who understands Social Studies sources but writes generic History explanations. One week might use 25 minutes to correct a Social Studies comparison, 35 minutes to build a History causation paragraph from evidence, and 20 minutes to retrieve the relevant contextual knowledge without notes. The following week starts with a short unseen check. Time follows the diagnosed need while both halves remain visible.
That is more useful than alternating full papers mechanically. The teaching mechanism is deliberate: identify the thinking move, model it once, practise it in a smaller task, then require the child to use it independently in an unfamiliar question.
How can parents see independent progress?
Track one observable measure for each half: for example, the proportion of Social Studies claims supported by specific source evidence and the proportion of elective paragraphs that answer the exact command word. Once a fortnight, use a short unseen task without prompts. Progress means the child can choose the method, not merely reproduce a tutor’s template.
