Did you know? The 2027 G2 SEC directory lists Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Panjabi and Urdu as five different subjects with five different codes, even though SEAB publishes them in one syllabus document. Tuition should follow the child’s exact language section and school arrangement—not a generic “other Mother Tongue” worksheet.
Start by checking the subject name and code on the school’s records: Bengali K239, Gujarati K240, Hindi K241, Panjabi K242 or Urdu K243. Then confirm how the child is taught and registered, because a national syllabus listing does not mean every school provides every language or that every tuition provider offers it.
The immediate next step is to bring the official 2027 syllabus, one recent composition and one language-use or comprehension paper to any prospective tutor. Ask the tutor to identify the exact section they will use, diagnose one recurring difficulty and show how a fresh task will test independent progress.

Use the exact subject code before choosing materials
The SEAB 2027 G2 directory provides the authoritative starting point. The codes are:
| G2 language | 2027 SEC code |
|---|---|
| Bengali | K239 |
| Gujarati | K240 |
| Hindi | K241 |
| Panjabi | K242 |
| Urdu | K243 |
This matters because a familiar-looking exercise may belong to another course, year or language section. The five subjects share an assessment structure in the combined document, but the language examples, prescribed or guiding lists and actual teaching must remain language-specific. A tutor should be able to open the relevant section rather than relying on a remembered legacy code.
G2 is a subject level, not a Posting Group. Under Full Subject-Based Banding, a student’s posting group does not by itself identify the level of every subject. Use the school’s current confirmation of the child’s language and level.
The common structure still contains different kinds of learning
SEAB’s combined 2027 syllabus for K239–K243 describes two papers for each of the five languages. Paper 1 is Composition, lasting two hours and carrying 90 marks. It contains a letter task—one of two topics, at least 90 words—and an essay task—one of four topics, at least 170 words.
Paper 2 is Language Usage and Comprehension, lasting 1 hour 30 minutes and carrying 110 marks. The listed language-use areas include combination or separation of words, idioms, proverbs and word pairs, sentence transformation, structural cloze and vocabulary. Comprehension includes multiple-choice and open-ended work.
These details show why “more composition tuition” may not answer every problem. A child who generates good ideas but struggles with sentence transformation needs a different lesson from a child who understands a passage but cannot support an open-ended answer. The same total score can hide very different learning needs.
The document says each of these syllabuses is available in October only. Families should therefore use the correct year-specific file and school advice rather than assume an older paper is unchanged.
Diagnose writing, language use and comprehension separately
A helpful first review uses three small samples. For writing, ask the learner to choose a topic and make a short plan before drafting. For language use, select a few varied items and ask the child to explain the rule or relationship behind each choice. For comprehension, compare an answer with the exact part of the passage that supports it.
Suppose a student writes a lively essay but repeatedly loses marks in structural cloze. Reassigning another long essay delays the real repair. The tutor might instead contrast several sentence patterns, model one decision aloud and ask the student to apply the distinction to new sentences. The next step is a fresh cloze passage without the tutor pointing to the answer.
Another student may know an idiom from a list yet use it in a context where the meaning does not fit. Practice should connect form, meaning and situation. Memorisation can support retrieval, but the learner must still decide whether the expression belongs in the sentence.
For comprehension, “copy the line” is not a complete strategy. The tutor should check whether the question asks for retrieval, explanation or inference, then help the learner select and shape relevant information. Use the exact language’s texts and accepted usage; do not translate an answer pattern from another language and assume it transfers unchanged.
Check school arrangements and genuine provider capability
SEAB’s directory states which syllabuses are offered to school candidates nationally. It does not promise that every school teaches every one of these five languages. Ask the school how the subject is provided, which syllabus and examination year apply, and where official assessment guidance comes from. Keep that answer with the child’s subject documents.
Ask a prospective tutor which of the five languages they actually teach, how they work with the relevant script and language conventions, and which section of the official document guides their materials. A provider who offers Hindi support should not be presented as offering Bengali, Gujarati, Panjabi or Urdu without confirmation. This article does not make that claim for eduKatePunggol or any other provider.
Also ask how current school work will be respected. For assessed assignments, the student must remain the author. A tutor may question, model a small example and give feedback, but should not compose work for submission or override the school’s supervision.
If a 3-pax format is available for the exact language, confirm that each learner receives time to read, write and explain independently. A small group is only useful when the teacher can respond to each child’s actual language work.
Track a small skill across a genuinely new task
Choose one target at a time: completing every letter task point, using a sentence transformation accurately, interpreting an idiom in context or supporting an open-ended comprehension answer. Keep the original attempt, focused practice and a later unfamiliar example.
Improvement means the child makes the decision with fewer prompts and can explain it in the language being studied. A corrected answer copied neatly is not yet independent progress. Ask what clue in the sentence or passage led to the choice, and listen for a reason rather than “that is the tutor’s answer”.
Review the balance after several weeks. If the target skill transfers, move to the next bottleneck. If it does not, revisit the prerequisite: vocabulary, sentence understanding, reading fluency or task interpretation. Tuition should narrow the gap and gradually reduce support, not create dependence on a particular worksheet.
