Did you know? Reading Tamil aloud and answering a comprehension question are different tasks. A child may pronounce a passage fluently while needing help with meaning, evidence or explaining an inference. Tamil tuition can help by identifying which connection is missing before adding more reading questions.
Use one short school passage. Ask your child to explain a sentence’s meaning, identify what a question asks and point to the relevant information. If the meaning is uncertain, work on language understanding first. If the meaning is clear but the response is incomplete, practise selecting and explaining evidence.
Bring the passage, question, attempted answer and teacher feedback to a prospective tutor. Ask for a lesson that moves from understanding to evidence selection and then independent answering. Confirm that the provider currently supports Tamil at the learner’s actual school level.

Why can fluent reading hide uncertain understanding?
Reading aloud can show familiarity with written forms and pronunciation, but it does not settle whether the learner understands every sentence. A child may also understand individual sentences without following the relationship between them. Ask for a short explanation in their own words.
If your child cannot explain a sentence, the tutor can check its vocabulary and structure. If they understand the sentence but choose unrelated evidence, the next lesson should focus on the question. These are different starting points.
How can a simple inference become visible?
Consider an original practice situation in which a character returns to a room several times to check that a treasured item is safe. Asked what this suggests, a learner might infer that the character is concerned about the item. The repeated checking provides evidence for that inference.
This example illustrates a reasoning step; it is not a Tamil examination extract. A Tamil teacher can select an appropriate passage and teach the language needed to express the answer. Ask the learner to distinguish what the text states from what they infer and why.
What should targeted comprehension support do?
The tutor can model finding relevant information and explain how it answers the question. Next, ask the student to choose evidence for another question before writing. A changed passage checks whether the learner has understood the process rather than remembered an answer.
Correct only the difficulty that is currently being taught, then revisit it on a fresh task. A useful answer should fit the question and preserve the meaning of the passage. Copying a long section can leave the required explanation missing.
Which syllabus and progress checks matter?
SEAB lists 2027 G3 Tamil as K322 and Higher Tamil separately as K357. Match the exact subject, examination year and candidate type, and use teacher feedback to identify the relevant tasks. A secondary syllabus should not be used as a difficulty target for a primary child.
In a 3-pax group, ask how each learner will choose evidence independently before discussion. Review a new passage for accurate understanding and a relevant answer with fewer prompts. That gives a clearer picture than fluency on a repeatedly practised passage.
