Why Does My Child Know History Facts but Struggle With Source-Based Questions? | Punggol History Tuition

Three students in school uniforms work through open books at a classroom table, with textbooks and stationery nearby and study notes on the whiteboard behind them.

Did you know? Knowing the historical story and answering a source-based question are related but different skills. History tuition can help when a student recalls events accurately yet struggles to infer a message, compare accounts or judge what a source can establish. The useful first step is to inspect the move between reading the source and writing the answer.

Ask your child to explain the source in ordinary language before using a memorised answer structure. Then check whether they have identified its author, context, relevant evidence and the question’s target. For SEC preparation, distinguish standalone History from the History component of Humanities and use the actual G2 or G3 syllabus.

Bring one marked source response and ask the tutor where the reasoning becomes unsupported. A focused lesson should repair that step and test it on a different source. More dates alone will not fix a difficulty in interpreting evidence, although accurate contextual knowledge still matters.

How can facts and source skills work together?

Historical knowledge helps a learner recognise the setting and understand what an author might know or want an audience to believe. It should illuminate the source rather than replace it. A paragraph of correct background facts can still leave the specific source question unanswered.

SEAB’s 2027 G2 Humanities History objectives include contextual knowledge, historical explanations and the interpretation of sources. This means the tutor should inspect both knowledge and source handling. The exact task and requirements depend on the offered subject; this guide is a diagnostic route rather than a universal marking template.

Why can two accounts disagree?

Consider a fictional training example. A factory manager says a closure followed outdated machinery; a worker says orders had fallen. Ask what each account establishes, what each leaves uncertain and whether the explanations could coexist. Two different perspectives do not automatically mean one person is lying.

Now give the learner a further invented record showing a decline in orders. Ask exactly which claim it supports. It does not, by itself, prove that machinery was modern or that the manager’s account was false. This exercise teaches a bounded judgement instead of an unsupported leap.

What should happen during tuition?

Begin with a short source and one question. Ask the learner to identify relevant words, explain their meaning and connect them to a claim. If an inference is weak, compare it with a nearby interpretation and ask which reading the evidence better supports.

Gradually add provenance, context and another source where the task calls for them. Do not attach the same evaluation paragraph to every answer. The student should understand why a source’s origin or purpose affects the particular claim under discussion.

How can parents see whether learning transfers?

Use a fresh source without the corrected answer beside it. Can the learner distinguish what is stated from what is inferred? Can they explain the relevance of a contextual fact? Can they qualify a conclusion when evidence is limited? These actions make progress visible.

For a proposed 3-pax group, ask how each learner’s reasoning will be heard and checked. Confirm current subject and level availability directly. Continue into the existing History guides below for wider revision; keep this consultation focused on the source-handling obstacle.
