How Can G3 Biology Tuition Help My Child Tell Genotype Ratios from Phenotype Ratios?

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

G3 Biology tuition can help your child distinguish genotype ratios from phenotype ratios by separating allele combinations from expressed characteristics. First list the possible genotypes from the cross. Then apply the dominance relationship supplied in the question to group those genotypes by phenotype.

For a Punggol parent, try asking: ‘Can AA and Aa look the same in this example?’ Under complete dominance, they can share the dominant phenotype despite having different genotypes. That single comparison often explains why a 1:2:1 genotype ratio can become a 3:1 phenotype ratio.

The 2027 SEC G3 Biology syllabus K325 includes genotype, phenotype, dominance, monohybrid crosses and expected inheritance ratios. This guide uses a hypothetical single-gene characteristic with stated complete dominance. It does not assume that complex human traits follow this simple model.

Confirm the student’s actual subject level and examination year. PG1, PG2 and PG3 are Posting Groups; they do not replace checking each subject’s G level. Ask a provider about subject availability before arranging specialist support.

CHAPTER 1 OF 5

Define the symbols before drawing the cross

In a hypothetical plant, let A represent the allele for purple flowers and a the allele for white flowers, with A completely dominant over a. A and a are alternative forms of the same gene in this model.

AA and aa are homozygous genotypes; Aa is heterozygous. The genotype records the allele combination. The phenotype describes the expressed characteristic: here, purple or white flowers.

Keep symbols consistent throughout. Capital A and lowercase a represent the two specified alleles; changing letters halfway through can make an otherwise sound genetic diagram hard to interpret. State the phenotype key before counting.

CHAPTER 2 OF 5

Work through Aa × Aa

Each heterozygous parent can produce gametes carrying A or a, with equal probability in this model. Combining them gives four equally likely outcomes: AA, Aa, aA and aa.

Aa and aA describe the same heterozygous genotype; the order of the letters does not create another genotype category. Count one AA, two Aa and one aa. The expected genotype ratio AA:Aa:aa is 1:2:1.

Under complete dominance, AA and Aa both produce purple flowers; aa produces white flowers. Grouping the four outcomes by expressed colour gives an expected purple:white phenotype ratio of 3:1.

CHAPTER 3 OF 5

Do not reuse 3:1 for every cross

For Aa × aa, the first parent contributes A or a and the second contributes only a. The outcomes are Aa and aa with equal probability. The expected genotype ratio is 1:1, and the expected purple:white phenotype ratio is also 1:1.

For AA × aa, every offspring is Aa in the model. All show the purple phenotype. The familiar 3:1 ratio belongs to a particular cross and dominance relationship, not to every inheritance question.

If the question specifies codominance, heterozygotes express both alleles rather than being grouped automatically with one homozygote. Read the stated inheritance pattern before turning genotype categories into phenotype categories.

CHAPTER 4 OF 5

Separate expected probability from observed counts

For Aa × Aa, each offspring has a probability of 1/4 of being aa under the model. Four offspring do not have to include exactly one aa individual. The diagram represents probabilities, not an ordered production schedule.

Among 80 offspring, the expected numbers would be 20 AA, 40 Aa and 20 aa. Those are expected counts, not guaranteed observations. Random sampling can produce a different set of counts.

A small sample showing two purple offspring and two white offspring does not by itself invalidate the cross. The syllabus asks learners to explain why observed ratios can differ from expected ratios, especially with small numbers of offspring. The separate guide to expected versus observed genetic ratios develops that question further.

CHAPTER 5 OF 5

Check a new cross without prompts

Try this original exercise: B is completely dominant over b, and the parents are Bb and bb. List the gametes, offspring genotypes and expected phenotype ratio. The answers are B or b from the first parent, b from the second, Bb:bb = 1:1, and dominant:recessive phenotype = 1:1.

Ask what changes for Bb × Bb. The expected genotype ratio is BB:Bb:bb = 1:2:1, while the expected phenotype ratio is 3:1. The child should explain the grouping, not merely recall two numbers.

Continue with the existing Mendelian genetics and Punnett-squares guide. Focused teaching can repair whichever connection is missing: gametes, combinations, dominance or probability.

Choose a focused next step

Use the Primary, PSLE and SEC subject directory to find related questions. Bring one recent piece of work and the teacher’s feedback to a consultation. Ask which step needs repair and how the student will demonstrate progress on a new task.

The Clementi Secondary 1 Mathematics guide illustrates diagnosis, sequenced practice and focused 3-pax teaching. Use these principles when asking how support will fit your child’s actual subject and starting point.
