Did you know? Two Primary 5 children can be in the same year and still need different subject materials. Tuition can help when it matches the child’s actual Standard or Foundation subject, school sequence and starting point. The level printed on a worksheet matters because a well-taught answer to the wrong syllabus is still the wrong preparation.
For English and Mother Tongue, check understanding, expression and the relevant assessment tasks. For Mathematics, strengthen the meaning behind operations before demanding speed. For Science, connect the concept to observations and explanations. Follow the school’s subject allocation and check the appropriate MOE curriculum and SEAB examination information.
Write the child’s subject levels on one sheet and identify a single priority in each subject. Then choose the most urgent obstacle rather than adding four tuition classes automatically. Ask the tutor to show how the selected materials match the level and how independent progress will be checked.

How should Standard and Foundation support differ?
The scope and assessment demands should come from the correct official documents. Foundation support should build usable understanding with suitable examples and pacing. Standard support should also repair prerequisites when needed; the label does not mean every earlier skill is already secure.
Avoid treating Foundation as merely a shorter Standard worksheet. Check the relevant objectives, question demands and assessment format. Equally, do not conclude that a child taking one Foundation subject needs the same level of support in every other subject. Build a separate picture for each.
What can a tutor do with a mixed learning profile?
Suppose a learner explains Science ideas clearly but struggles to organise an English paragraph, while Mathematics errors begin with fractions. The teaching plan should contain three different jobs: strengthen evidence-based Science answers, organise language meaning and rebuild fraction relationships. One generic “exam technique” lesson cannot replace them.
A good correction asks the learner to identify why the earlier answer failed. Follow it with a new question that uses the same idea in another setting. If the child succeeds only on the corrected original, the lesson has not yet shown that the skill transfers.

Build a manageable review habit before relying on full papers. Revisit earlier work, compare methods and practise completing a small task without prompts. Introduce examination formats at the appropriate time, while keeping the main emphasis on understanding the taught curriculum.
For a Punggol family, the practical question is whether schoolwork, travel, CCA and tuition leave enough time to consolidate. In a 3-pax class, ask how pacing handles different readiness. Review the plan when the child begins to work more independently, and reduce repetitive tasks that no longer serve a clear purpose.
