Did you know? A child can know the answer and still need help getting started. Primary 1 tuition can help when a specific difficulty—reading an instruction, understanding a number or expressing an idea—keeps interrupting schoolwork. The useful starting point is the child’s actual work, rather than a race to finish Primary 2 material.
For English, look at decoding, understanding spoken instructions and building a complete sentence. For Mathematics, look at quantity, place value and the meaning of addition and subtraction. For Mother Tongue, discuss listening, speaking and early literacy with a teacher who knows the language. Formal primary Science begins in Primary 3; curiosity in Primary 1 belongs in conversation and exploration.
Try one short task today: ask your child to read or hear an instruction, explain what to do, and complete it. Notice where help was needed. A focused tuition plan should address that point while leaving space for play, sleep, school relationships and the wider curriculum.

Is the problem reading, understanding or starting?
Put three familiar objects on the table and ask for two more. A child who builds five objects correctly but cannot read the written question may need language support more than extra calculation. A child who reads fluently but counts the same object twice needs a different kind of teaching. That distinction saves time and makes the lesson kinder.
For a sentence such as “The cat sits on the mat”, separate recognition of the words from understanding the event. Ask the child to point to the cat, describe its position and make a new sentence. Reading a memorised line is different from using its meaning.
What should a helpful lesson look like?
Start with a concrete object, picture or spoken example. Let the child explain, model one step, and invite another attempt with slightly changed details. Short practice followed by feedback is more informative than a completed page that the adult has largely directed.
In a 3-pax group, the tutor can invite each child to answer and listen to how the others explain. The value comes from observed participation, suitable pacing and useful corrections. A small group should still match the child’s readiness; class size alone does not establish that match.
What about the other Primary 1 subjects?
Art, Music, Physical Education, Social Studies and Character and Citizenship Education contribute to a broad school experience. They are not reasons to buy a tuition package for every subject. Follow the school’s guidance, encourage participation and use everyday activities to support communication and confidence.
After several lessons, look for a specific change: the child starts a familiar task with less prompting, explains a quantity clearly or reads a short unfamiliar sentence. Keep two dated samples. If little changes, revisit the diagnosis rather than automatically increasing homework.
