Which 2027 SEC G3 Third-Language Syllabus Should My Child’s Tutor Follow?

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

Your child’s tutor should follow the exact 2027 SEC G3 syllabus title and K-code shown by the school—not a generic “third-language” programme and not an older O-Level code. Match the language, K-code, school documents and examination year before choosing materials.

The immediate next step is simple: ask the school for the registered subject title or examination entry, then check it against the official SEAB G3 directory below. Send that exact document to a prospective tutor and ask them to confirm, in writing, that they teach the language and assessment route concerned.

Did you know? G3 is the subject level. It is not the same thing as Posting Group 3, and a student’s Posting Group does not automatically determine which third language is available or taken. School offering, eligibility and registration still matter.

Which K-code matches each 2027 G3 third language?

The official SEAB 2027 G3 syllabus directory for school candidates lists these titles and codes:

2027 SEC G3 subject titleCode
Arabic as a 3rd LanguageK366
Bahasa Indonesia as a 3rd LanguageK367
SpanishK373
HindiK360
UrduK362
GujaratiK359
PanjabiK361
BengaliK358
BurmeseK369
ThaiK374
FrenchK370
GermanK371
JapaneseK372

These are separate syllabuses. Do not assume that a tutor who teaches one can teach another, or that their papers, prescribed knowledge and weighting are interchangeable. Open the language-specific PDF from the SEAB directory and compare the full scheme of assessment.

Four checks before tuition starts

  1. Registration: confirm the exact subject title and 2027 K-code with the school.
  2. Document: use the language-specific 2027 syllabus, not only a textbook cover or an old subject code.
  3. Provision: confirm where and how the subject is taught, because the SEAB directory does not mean every school or tuition provider offers every language.
  4. Evidence: give the tutor one recent school task, teacher feedback and the current examination components so diagnosis starts from the child’s actual course.

Also check whether the tutor is fluent enough to model pronunciation, register and authentic usage, and whether they understand how the target script is read and written. “Language tuition” is too broad a claim for a specialised SEC subject.

What should the tutor diagnose first?

Start with four short samples rather than a full mock paper: one listening or audio-based response where relevant, one reading task, one brief piece of writing and one spoken response. The exact format must come from the child’s syllabus, but the comparison reveals where communication breaks down.

  • Recognition without retrieval: the child understands a word when reading but cannot produce it while speaking or writing.
  • Vocabulary without control: many words are known, yet sentence structure, agreement, particles or tense make meaning uncertain.
  • Accurate but slow: the child can complete the task only with unlimited time.
  • Fluent but imprecise: the child communicates easily but misses the prompt, register or required details.
  • Script bottleneck: decoding or handwriting consumes attention that should be used for meaning.

This matters because the remedy is different. More vocabulary lists will not fix weak listening segmentation. More conversation will not automatically teach the organisation required in a written task. Diagnosis prevents busy practice from hiding the real gap.

A concrete example of connected language practice

Suppose the child can discuss a familiar topic but gives thin answers under assessment conditions. The tutor selects a short, syllabus-appropriate text or audio clip about a community event. The student first retrieves five useful expressions, then sorts them by function: describing, explaining a reason, comparing, expressing a view or asking for clarification.

Next, the child gives a 45-second response using two functions, rewrites the idea as a short paragraph, and finally answers an unprepared follow-up. The tutor records only two targets—perhaps clearer verb control and one developed example—then repeats the cycle with a new topic. This links receptive knowledge to productive use.

If the setting is a three-student group and the provider genuinely offers that language and syllabus, peers can take turns as speaker, listener and evidence checker. They should not memorise one shared script. Each child needs individual retrieval and an independent final response.

How can parents check progress without speaking the language?

Parents can still track process. Once a fortnight, ask the child to complete a fresh task under a fixed time and save the first attempt. Check whether the student can:

  • state what the task requires before starting;
  • retrieve useful language without copying a model;
  • notice and correct one recurring error;
  • respond to a new detail rather than reciting a prepared answer; and
  • explain which syllabus skill the practice was meant to improve.

Teacher feedback and school results should remain the main external evidence. Tuition cannot create a school offering, register a candidate, replace authentic exposure or guarantee an examination result. A responsible tutor also says when the issue requires school clarification or a more specialised language teacher.

Official source and useful next reading

Use the K-code as the handover key between school, parent and tutor. If any document or provider uses a different code, pause and reconcile it with the school before lessons continue.
