Why Does My Child Memorise Chemistry but Struggle with Chemical Equations? | Punggol Chemistry Tuition Guide

Three students in school uniforms work through open books at a classroom table, with textbooks and stationery nearby and study notes on the whiteboard behind them.

Did you know? Memorising reaction facts and constructing a chemical equation require different connections. A student needs to identify substances, write their formulae and show a balanced reaction. Chemistry tuition can help by locating the first step that breaks down, rather than asking the child to memorise more equations.

Start with one attempted equation. Ask your child to name the reactants and products, explain each formula and count each element on both sides. If the formula itself is wrong, balancing practice alone will not solve the problem. If the formulae are correct, practise changing coefficients while keeping the substances unchanged.

Bring one marked equation and its original question to a prospective tutor. Ask for teaching that connects words, particles and symbols, followed by a changed example completed independently. The aim is for your child to construct and check an equation, not just recognise one they have seen before.

Which step is causing the difficulty?

An incorrect equation can begin with misunderstanding the reaction, confusing a substance’s formula or balancing incorrectly. These need different explanations. Let the child talk through the choices before correcting the finished answer; the first uncertain step gives a useful teaching starting point.

Ask whether the learner understands a subscript and a coefficient. A subscript is part of a substance’s formula. A coefficient tells us the relative amount of that substance in the equation. Treating them as interchangeable changes the meaning.

What does balancing actually preserve?

Consider magnesium reacting with oxygen: 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO. There are two magnesium atoms and two oxygen atoms on each side. The coefficient 2 before MgO multiplies the whole formula, so it represents two magnesium atoms and two oxygen atoms.

Changing MgO to MgO₂ to make the oxygen count look convenient would change the formula of the product. Ask your child to count the atoms aloud or draw a simple representation. Then give another equation with correct formulae and ask them to balance it without changing those formulae.

How should tuition build the connection?

A tutor can move from a word description to the substances’ formulae, then to a balanced equation and an explanation of what it represents. When appropriate to the learner’s course, state symbols and ionic equations should be taught as additional meaning, not decoration.

The 2027 G3 Chemistry syllabus includes deducing formulae and constructing chemical equations with state symbols, including ionic equations. Teach the prerequisite that is missing before adding the next demand. A student who cannot yet interpret a formula needs a different starting task from one who only omits state symbols.

How can parents check improvement?

Use a fresh reaction appropriate to the school topic. Can the learner explain the formulae, balance the equation and check the element counts independently? Keep a small record of recurring errors so the next lesson addresses a pattern rather than repeating all the work.

Confirm the provider’s current subject availability. In a 3-pax group, ask how each student will construct an equation before seeing the answer. Match the examination year and exact course: standalone Chemistry and Science combinations require their own official syllabus documents.
