Why Would an Examiner Reject My Child’s G3 Economics Elasticity Conclusion When the Calculation Is Correct?

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

Because a correct percentage calculation is only the start of a G3 Economics answer. An examiner still needs to see what the elasticity value means, which variable changes, and how that meaning answers the case question. A learner can earn the number and lose the conclusion by calling demand “elastic” without comparing the absolute value with 1, by reversing the revenue effect, or by ignoring the evidence in the extract.

The immediate next step is simple: ask your child to annotate one completed question with four labels—calculate, classify, connect, conclude. If any label is missing, diagnose that stage before assigning another page of sums.

This guide concerns G3 Economics, not Posting Group 3 as a permanent label. Posting group is an entry arrangement; subject level describes the level at which the subject is taken. Families should confirm the child’s actual subject level and their school’s offering.

Quick orientation

  • Best first check: can the learner explain the value in one sentence before discussing revenue?
  • Official reference used here: the 2027 SEC G3 Economics syllabus, code K343.
  • Availability note: SEAB marks G3 Economics with “+”, meaning it is for candidates from schools approved to offer it.
  • Tuition is useful when it repairs a specific reasoning break; it should not replace the school’s teaching or the student’s own work.

What the examiner is looking for after the number

From an examiner’s viewpoint, a numerical answer is evidence, not yet an economic judgement. The marker must be able to follow a visible chain: the price change and quantity change produce a price elasticity of demand value; the magnitude classifies demand; that classification predicts the proportionate response of quantity demanded; and the response explains what happens to consumer expenditure or a firm’s revenue.

A common weak ending is: “PED is 0.6, so revenue rises.” The missing bridge is direction. If price rises and demand is price inelastic, quantity demanded falls by a smaller proportion, so total revenue is expected to rise, other things being equal. If the price falls, the expected revenue direction reverses. A memorised slogan without the direction in the case is unsafe.

  • Calculate: use percentage changes consistently and keep the sign convention required by the question.
  • Classify: compare the magnitude with 1; do not confuse a negative sign with the elastic/inelastic category.
  • Connect: state whether quantity demanded changes by a larger, equal or smaller proportion than price.
  • Conclude: answer the named decision, using the case evidence and an appropriate qualification.

Diagnose the exact break before adding practice

Begin with a short oral reconstruction. Give the learner a value such as 0.5 and ask: “What does this tell us?” If they can classify it but cannot describe the proportionate response, the concept-to-language bridge is weak. If they can explain the response but reverse revenue, the direction chain is weak. If they can do both in isolation but omit the firm named in the case, application is weak.

Then inspect the working. Elasticity mistakes often come from a quiet arithmetic habit: swapping the numerator and denominator, using absolute changes instead of percentage changes, or rounding too early. A tutor should record which error recurs. “Careless” is not a diagnosis; “reverses the percentage-change ratio under time pressure” is.

A useful five-minute diagnostic

  • One calculation with clearly labelled percentage changes.
  • One classification sentence using the magnitude of PED.
  • One price-rise revenue conclusion.
  • One price-fall revenue conclusion.
  • One case-specific limitation or condition.

A worked example: correct calculation, incomplete conclusion

Suppose a shop raises the price of a snack from $2.00 to $2.20, a 10% increase, while quantity demanded falls by 5%. Using the simplified percentage-change figures supplied, the magnitude of PED is 0.5. The arithmetic is correct.

A weak conclusion says, “PED is 0.5, so the firm should raise price.” A stronger answer says, “Demand is price inelastic because the PED magnitude is below 1. Quantity demanded falls by a smaller proportion than price rises, so the firm’s total revenue is expected to increase, other things being equal. However, the decision should also consider whether the estimate is reliable and whether competitors or consumer preferences change.”

Notice what the stronger answer does. It does not merely attach more words. Each sentence performs a job: classification, mechanism, decision, limitation. That structure is reusable across unfamiliar cases without turning the answer into a memorised paragraph.

How focused tuition can turn a slogan into reasoning

Effective tuition can separate the task into visible moves. First, the learner sorts cards showing values into perfectly inelastic, inelastic, unitary, elastic and perfectly elastic cases. Next, the learner narrates the price–quantity relationship aloud. Only then do they write a revenue conclusion. This sequence lets the tutor hear the misconception before it is hidden inside polished prose.

In a conditional three-student tutorial, three learners can receive different price directions or PED magnitudes, explain their chains, and challenge one another’s missing link. That format is useful only if the provider actually offers the subject, the tasks match the learner’s syllabus and every student still completes an individual response. Families should verify provision directly rather than assume it from group size.

A good correction cycle is brief: attempt, pinpoint one broken link, model the thinking, retry with a changed context, then revisit after a delay. The target is not a perfect copied answer in the lesson. It is a clean conclusion produced independently a week later.

What the 2027 K343 syllabus actually requires

The official 2027 SEC G3 Economics syllabus (K343) includes the definition and calculation of price elasticity of demand, interpretation of its significance from perfectly inelastic to perfectly elastic, determinants of PED, the relationship between PED and consumer expenditure or firms’ revenue, and its significance for decisions. That is why the teaching goal must extend beyond calculator accuracy.

The SEAB 2027 G3 syllabus list is the year-specific index parents should use. It shows Economics K343 with the approved-school marker. Check the current examination year, the school’s subject offer and any school instructions; do not assume every G3 learner or every school offers Economics.

The assessment objectives also distinguish knowledge and understanding, application and analysis, and evaluation. A conclusion that uses a value accurately but never applies it to the business decision leaves important work undone.

What tuition should not do

Tuition cannot turn an estimated elasticity into certainty. PED can vary with time period, availability of substitutes, proportion of income and how narrowly the product is defined. A responsible tutor teaches these as reasons to qualify a conclusion, not as excuses to avoid one.

School tasks, internal assessments and any supervised work remain under the school’s rules. The learner should keep ownership of every submitted answer. A tutor may teach the method, question unsupported leaps and provide fresh practice; the tutor should not write assessed responses for the student.

How parents can tell whether the learning is sticking

  • After 48 hours, give a new value and price direction. The learner should complete all four moves without prompts.
  • Ask the learner to explain why the opposite price direction changes the revenue conclusion.
  • Look for units, labelled percentage changes and sensible rounding in the working.
  • In a case question, check that the final sentence names the actual firm, product or decision.
  • Track whether the learner can state one relevant condition without automatically writing a generic “depends on other factors.”

A compact progress log can record the date, the missing link, the correction and the delayed-retry result. When the same misconception stops recurring across different contexts, practice can move on.
