Did you know? Reading the numbers on a Geography graph does not yet explain the pattern. Geography tuition can help a learner move from identifying values to comparing them, recognising a relationship and using a relevant geographical process to explain it. The useful diagnosis asks which of those steps is missing.
Check the graph’s title, axes, units, scale and time period first. Then separate description from explanation: what changes is different from why it changes. Use the student’s school programme and actual SEC subject; standalone Geography and a Geography component within Humanities should not be treated as identical preparation.
Take one graph-based answer to the tutor. Ask your child to describe the pattern without explaining it, then offer a possible reason and identify the evidence needed to support that reason. This short comparison reveals whether the difficulty is data reading, concept knowledge or connecting the two.

What can go wrong before explanation begins?
A student may read the wrong axis, overlook a unit or compare values from different periods. Start with a literal account of what each number represents. A graph of totals and a graph of percentages can tell different stories even when their lines look similar.
Use a small invented dataset: visitors rise from 100 in one month to 150 in the next. That is an increase of 50 visitors, or 50% relative to the first month. Calling it a 50-percentage-point increase would require percentage values in the original data. Clear units protect the later explanation.
How does a description become an explanation?
The invented visitor figures show an increase, but do not identify its cause. A new transport connection, an event or a seasonal change might be possible explanations. The learner should use the given context and relevant knowledge to decide what can be supported.
Ask which additional information would help distinguish those explanations. This prevents the student from attaching a familiar geographical paragraph to every upward line. A possible mechanism becomes persuasive when it fits the situation and the evidence.
What should a Geography tutor teach?
Teach the representation and the concept together. Read the data accurately, identify the important comparison and explain the process that could produce it. Then check whether the question asks for a pattern, a cause, an evaluation or an investigation decision.
The 2027 G2 Geography syllabus includes knowledge, analysis and judgement. That supports a lesson sequence that goes beyond extracting a value. Match the exact scope and assessment tasks to the learner’s offered subject, including the distinction between standalone and combined Humanities routes.
How can a family check independent progress?
Give a different graph with the same kind of relationship. Ask for the unit, the main pattern, supporting figures and an explanation appropriate to the context. Remove the lesson heading so the child must select the relevant idea rather than copy it.
In a 3-pax lesson, learners can compare interpretations while the tutor checks the evidence behind each. At home, a short discussion of a suitable map or chart is enough; not every outing needs to become assessed fieldwork. Confirm current Geography support availability before arranging a programme.
