Did you know? Your child does not automatically need tuition for every school subject. The useful starting point is a specific learning need: something they cannot yet understand, apply or complete independently. Tuition can be worth the time when it addresses that need with suitable teaching and a clear way to review progress.
Before adding a class, choose one recent piece of schoolwork and ask what went wrong. Was a concept missing, an instruction misunderstood, a skill not yet fluent, or the task left unfinished? Ask the teacher about the pattern. Sometimes a short clarification or a better practice routine is a sensible first step; sometimes sustained teaching support is needed.
Prioritise the gap that most affects current learning, and agree on one observable goal. For example, your child might explain a Maths method or complete a reading task with fewer prompts. Fit support around school responsibilities and time to rest, move and pursue interests. Review the goal before committing to more subjects.

How can parents separate a subject from a skill?
“English is weak” covers many possibilities. A child might understand a passage but struggle to justify an answer; another might need help reading the sentences themselves. Their teaching needs differ. A score is a useful signal, but the actual work gives more information about where to begin.
Ask your child to attempt a small task while you observe without completing it for them. Note the first point where help is needed. Compare that observation with teacher feedback before deciding on tuition. This gives a prospective tutor a concrete starting position.
Does every school subject have the same assessment route?
MOE lists a broad primary curriculum, including languages, Mathematics, Science, Art, Music, Physical Education and Social Studies. These learning experiences have different purposes. Checking the school curriculum and the relevant examination syllabus helps parents avoid treating every subject as an identical worksheet-and-test problem.
For Art, Music or PE, begin with the teacher’s description of the learning need. Support may involve practising a skill, participating more confidently or understanding a task. General PE should not be confused with the separately listed SEC Exercise and Sports Science subject. Match the support to what the child actually studies.
How should priorities change after PSLE?
At secondary school, check the child’s actual subjects and levels before buying resources or choosing classes. A posting-group label alone is insufficient for selecting every subject’s materials. The school’s current subject information and the official examination-year syllabus should guide the plan.
A student may need substantial help in one subject and only an occasional check in another. Start where a missing prerequisite keeps blocking new learning. Ask the tutor to reconnect that prerequisite to the present school task, then check independent application on a changed question.
What should a useful tuition plan promise to show?
Ask for a diagnosis, a starting topic, a suitable practice load and a review point. In a 3-pax group, ask how the tutor will check each learner’s understanding and adjust support. Confirm the centre’s current subject offerings; an educational article about a subject does not establish that a class is available.
Review evidence such as more accurate reasoning, fewer prompts and better application to new tasks. If the original goal has been reached, discuss the next need rather than adding work automatically. Tuition should help the learner do more independently and make the family’s next decision clearer.
