Why Does My Child Know Physics Formulas but Not Know When to Use Them? | Punggol Physics Tuition Guide

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

Did you know? Knowing a Physics formula does not automatically tell a student when it applies. Your child may remember the symbols but struggle to connect a situation, its quantities and the relationship needed. Physics tuition can help by teaching that connection before asking for faster substitution.

Try one marked question today. Cover the solution and ask your child to name the quantity being found, identify the useful information and explain why a relationship fits. If the choice is sound but rearranging the equation fails, practise the algebra. If no relationship comes to mind, start with the physical meaning.

Bring the attempted working to a prospective tutor. Ask for a short sequence of identifying the situation, choosing a relationship and checking an unfamiliar question independently. That gives parents more useful evidence than how quickly a student follows a complete worked solution.

Why does a formula list sometimes fail?

A list organises relationships, but the learner still has to recognise which quantities belong together. They may select a formula because its symbols resemble the numbers in the question. The tutor should check whether the child understands the relationship and any conditions attached to its use.

Ask the student to explain the problem without numbers. What is changing, what remains fixed, and what does the question want? A sketch or labelled diagram can reveal the physical situation before calculation begins.

How can a short example teach the choice?

Suppose an object travels 120 metres in 20 seconds and the question asks for its average speed. Average speed is total distance divided by total time, giving 6 metres per second. Ask why that answer describes the whole journey rather than the speed at one particular instant.

Now imagine the object sped up and slowed down during the journey. The same total distance and total time still give the same average speed. This comparison teaches what the relationship means. It also shows why those two totals alone cannot establish the speed at every instant.

What should targeted Physics tuition do?

The tutor can model the decision, then ask the student to compare two situations and choose a route before calculating. A later question should change the wording or representation so the learner must recognise the relationship again. Feedback should separate a conceptual error, an algebra error and a unit error.

The 2027 G3 Physics syllabus includes selecting and translating information, solving problems and applying concepts in unfamiliar situations. Formula recall supports this work, but does not replace it. Practical and investigative skills also need attention according to the actual course.

How can parents review progress?

Look for a correct choice explained in the child’s own words, sensible working and an answer checked against the context. If considering a 3-pax group, ask how every learner will choose a method before the shared explanation. Keep follow-up practice focused on the observed gap.

Confirm current subject availability and match the exact examination year and course. Standalone G3 Physics and Science with a Physics component have different syllabus documents. Use the school’s subject information to select the right one before choosing resources.
