Because mentioning every picture proves coverage, but a successful G3 Japanese composition also needs proportion, connection and purposeful language. Tuition can help your child turn six separate captions into one developing story by identifying the change, linking cause and consequence, and giving important moments more narrative weight.
Try this before another full composition. Ask your child to label the six pictures as setup, trigger, complication, response, turning point and ending. Then give each picture one action and one consequence. If every panel receives an equal, disconnected sentence, the missing skill is story architecture rather than kanji recall.
G3 Japanese K372 is a specific 2027 subject available in the October/November session. G3 is the subject level, not the student’s Posting Group. Confirm the child’s registration, school or examination-centre arrangements and any tutor’s actual Japanese competence before using specialist support.

SECTION 1 OF 6
Why is complete coverage not yet a developed story?
The official content descriptor gives value to each picture, but it also distinguishes sufficient coverage from repetition or limited breadth. An examiner needs to follow what changes and why. Six grammatically correct captions can remain flat when no event affects the next.
- Setup: establish who, where and the initial goal without spending half the response.
- Trigger: identify what disturbs the starting situation.
- Development: show decisions and consequences, not a list of movements.
- Turning point: give the most important picture enough narrative weight.
- Ending: resolve or deliberately reflect on the change.
Coverage is the floor. Coherence, selection and development turn the sequence into a composition.
SECTION 2 OF 6
How can the six pictures become one narrative arc?
Use an invented sequence: a student prepares a gift, misses a train, notices the gift has been left behind, asks for help, recovers it and arrives late at a celebration. The panels are not equally important. The forgotten gift and the recovery decision drive the story.
Before writing Japanese, connect the pictures with arrows labelled cause, contrast or consequence. “Missed train → hurry → forget gift” creates continuity. “Arrives late, but gift is recovered” gives the ending emotional direction.
Then choose connectors for real work: まず for orientation, その後 for sequence, しかし for contrast, そのため for consequence and 最後に for closure. These words cannot rescue an illogical plot, but they make a planned relationship visible.
Ask the child to remove one sentence. If the story still works, that sentence may be a caption without narrative work. Replace it with a reaction, decision or consequence that changes how the next panel is understood.
SECTION 3 OF 6
How should grammar and kanji support the story?
Plan within language the learner can control, then extend deliberately. A story overloaded with untested structures may become ambiguous. A story using only the same short present-tense pattern may remain understandable but limited.
Choose two improvement targets: perhaps varied sentence endings and accurate past-tense narration, or one relative clause and more precise verbs. Reuse of the same safe verb does not demonstrate range, while random difficult vocabulary does not create coherence.
Kanji practice should be connected to meaning. Group likely story words by action, time, feeling and place, then retrieve them inside short sentences. The 2027 assessment also considers grammar, structures and kanji usage, so memorised character lists need to return to communication.
In a conditional 3-pax lesson, each student should build a different story map from the same pictures before comparing decisions. A shared model written first would erase the very planning evidence the lesson should develop.
SECTION 4 OF 6
What does the 2027 K372 syllabus require?
SEAB’s 2027 G3 Japanese syllabus K372 requires all candidates to take Writing, Reading, Listening and Oral papers. Writing and Reading are each weighted at 33%; Listening and Oral are each weighted at 17%. Dictionaries are not permitted, and the syllabus is available in October/November only.
Paper 1 Writing lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. Exercise 1 asks for a 260–300-character Japanese composition describing the story in a series of six pictures. It carries 10 marks: five for content and five for grammar and structures.
The content descriptors reward appropriate value given to each picture and sufficient coverage; lower descriptions mention an ignored picture, repetition or lack of breadth. Exercise 2 is a separate 350–400-character essay with its own expectations, including structure, consistency of opinions and distinguishing facts from opinions.
The official 2027 G3 syllabus directory lists Japanese as K372. Confirm the candidate’s entry route and current administrative details with the school or examination centre. Official details checked 11 October 2026.
SECTION 5 OF 6
What should a useful tuition cycle look like?
Start with a silent picture sequence and oral storytelling in simple Japanese. If the logic is weak before writing, adding kanji practice will not solve it. Once the arc is clear, draft under a character budget, revise one connection and proofread targeted grammar.
A tutor should ask why a picture matters, not merely whether it was mentioned. Feedback can identify “caption”, “cause missing”, “reaction missing”, “ending unearned” or “language ambiguous”. The learner then repairs that function on a new sequence.
Do not supply complete sentences for every panel. Offer a connector choice or question, let the child compose, then test whether the sentence genuinely links events. Confirm specialist Japanese provision rather than assuming a general language programme covers K372.
SECTION 6 OF 6
What independent progress can parents check?
Give a fresh six-panel sequence. In five minutes, can your child identify the turning point, map at least three cause-or-consequence links and choose where to spend more characters? After writing, can they explain why each panel has a different narrative job?
Check the official character range and whether all pictures contribute. Then look for movement: a goal changes, a problem produces a response, or the ending reflects what came before. A composition can be short and still feel alive when its details have unequal, purposeful weight.
If the story is coherent orally but collapses in writing, focus on retrieval and sentence control. If the Japanese is accurate but the plot remains six captions, focus on planning. Tuition is working when the child can make that diagnosis and revise without a supplied model.
