Did you know? The next useful step in Primary 2 may be one fewer adult reminder. Tuition can help a child become more independent by strengthening reading, number sense and the habit of checking work. The goal is a child who can carry a method back into school, rather than a child who performs only while a tutor points to each step.
Begin with English, Mathematics and Mother Tongue separately. In English, check whether the child understands a short text and can express an answer. In Mathematics, inspect the meaning behind the chosen operation. For Mother Tongue, check comprehension as well as remembered spelling or characters. Formal Science starts in Primary 3, so Primary 2 preparation can remain playful and observational.
Choose one independence target: read the instruction, start the task, explain the answer or check one mistake. Tell the tutor which target matters most. Practise briefly at home, then step back long enough to see whether the child can actually use the skill.

Why does a child wait for help?
Waiting can mean several things. The child may not understand a word, may be unsure how to choose a method, or may have learned that an adult will confirm every move. Ask “What do you think the first step is?” before offering it. The response tells you which kind of support is needed.
For a story about 12 stickers and 5 being given away, ask the child to act out the change before calculating. A confident subtraction answer should connect to the story. If the child merely spots a familiar word and guesses an operation, vary the wording while keeping the quantities simple.
How can English and Mother Tongue practice become useful?
Read a short passage, talk about its meaning and ask for an answer in the child’s own words. Then find a sentence that supports the answer. For writing, build a clear sentence before expanding it with an interesting detail. Correct one recurring difficulty rather than covering every line in corrections.
In Mother Tongue, conversation and listening help reveal whether vocabulary has a usable meaning. Dictation can support recall, but a remembered word should also appear in a sensible sentence. Work with the language teacher on the particular script, sound system and classroom expectations.
What should parents ask a Primary 2 tutor?
Ask how prompts will gradually be reduced. A useful sequence is a demonstrated example, a shared attempt and an independent question. Ask how the tutor distinguishes misunderstanding from an occasional slip, and how schoolwork will be used to choose the next task.
A 3-pax format can give children space to practise explaining while the tutor observes. Review progress through unaided work: fewer reminders, clearer explanations and a correct attempt after the model has been removed. Preserve time for Art, Music, PE and the other school experiences that help children grow.
