Wheelchair-Accessible Transport from Punggol: Taxis, Transport Services and Assistance

HDB housing, car park and pick-up area opposite Edgefield Secondary School in Punggol, Singapore.

For wheelchair accessible transport Punggol families can book island-wide services that pick up from home: CDG’s MaxiCab Wheelchair Service ($70 flat), Strides Care vans with hydraulic lifts (from $38 one way, before GST), or Grab’s wheelchair options. For polyclinic and hospital visits, ask about AIC’s subsidised Medical Escort and Transport.

Getting out should not depend on whether the wheelchair folds. With a little planning, it rarely has to.

This page is part of eduKate Punggol’s Essential Information for Punggol, our quick answers and where-to-go lists for everyday life in Punggol. It compares the accessible transport services we could verify, what they cost, the subsidies that can help, and how to book a ride that suits both the person and the chair.

Which Service Fits the Person and the Chair

The wheelchair folds and the passenger can transfer

Grab’s “Storage only” option has boot space for one foldable device. If the passenger needs help getting in and out, choose “Storage + assistance”, which Grab offers for seniors and persons with disabilities.

The passenger needs to stay in the wheelchair

Choose a ramp or lift: Grab’s “Ramp + assistance”, the CDG MaxiCab Wheelchair Service, or a Strides Care van. The van fare covers one wheelchair user and one caregiver.

A motorised or high-back wheelchair

SG Enable names the Strides London Taxi for larger wheelchairs like these. For a van, tell Strides the chair’s type and size when you call. Mobility devices also have new path rules from June 2026, explained in our PMD and e-bike rules guide.

A hospital or polyclinic appointment, with no one to help

AIC’s Medical Escort and Transport is meant for people who have difficulty moving on their own and lack a caregiver who can help. “Talk to your doctor at the hospital or polyclinic,” AIC says, and they can submit the application online.

Regular trips to school, work or training

Look at SG Enable’s Taxi Subsidy Scheme. It is for people certified as unable to take public transport, and it covers travel to school, work or SG Enable-supported employment training.

A trip to the airport

Strides Care prices airport departures at $70 (8.31am–10pm) or $85 (6.31–8.30am and 10.01–11.30pm), and arrival pick-ups at $80 or $95, before GST. Our Changi Airport guide covers the rest of the journey.

How to Book a Wheelchair-Accessible Ride, Step by Step

  1. Know the chair. Does it fold? Is it motorised or high-back? This decides which vehicle you need.
  2. Choose the service. Use the table above, and check whether a subsidy applies before you pay full fare.
  3. Book early. Strides asks for 2 to 3 days’ notice for hourly charters.
  4. Give an exact pick-up point. A block driveway or covered drop-off is best. For Punggol Polyclinic, station guides list a pick-up point on the Oasis Terraces driveway at Oasis LRT Exit A (check live); see our taxi stands guide.
  5. Say who is travelling. A Strides van fare covers one wheelchair user and one caregiver; each extra caregiver is $5.
  6. Confirm the fare and extras. Ask about waiting time, extra stops and late-night charges.
  7. Be ready on time. Strides charges $15 per 15 minutes of waiting after a 15-minute grace period. CDG charges $10 per 15-minute waiting block.
  8. Change plans early. Strides changes are free more than 2 hours before pick-up, cost $12 within 2 hours, and are not allowed within 45 minutes.

Costs and Subsidies

  • CDG MaxiCab Wheelchair Service: $70 flat; $20 per extra stop or deviation; $12 late-night charge (midnight–5.59am); $10 per 15-minute waiting block. No peak or ERP charges (fares from 2 January 2025).
  • Strides Care van (before GST): one way $38 up to 5 km, $43 for 5–10 km, $48 for 10–15 km, $53 for 15–20 km, $58 over 20 km. Two-way trips are double. Add $10 at weekday peak times (6.31–9am and 4.01–10.30pm) and $10 at weekends and on public holidays. Full fare applies to cancellations within one working day.
  • AIC Medical Escort and Transport: each round trip “starts from $40, before any government subsidies”. Subsidies are means-tested for citizens and PRs, using household income per person, or Annual Value if there is no income.
  • Taxi Subsidy Scheme: per capita household income up to $4,800, or Annual Value up to $21,000 if there is no income. The same SG Enable page also mentions $3,600, so confirm with SG Enable. From 1 July 2026, MSF raised the income criteria and the subsidy rates.
  • Persons with Disabilities Concession Card: up to 55% off adult bus and train fares. Apply through SimplyGo or SG Enable. Our SimplyGo and concessions guide explains fares.
  • Other help on SG Enable’s list: the Enabling Transport Subsidy (through a SPED school or social service agency), the Car Park Label Scheme, and the TTSH Driving Assessment and Rehabilitation Programme (doctor’s referral).

What to Prepare for a Taxi Subsidy Scheme Application

The scheme is for citizens and PRs with a physical disability (needing help with at least one of six activities of daily living), moderate visual impairment or worse, intellectual disability or autism. Applicants must be certified as unable to take public transport and totally dependent on taxis, and must not own a motor vehicle. Processing takes up to 15 working days. Prepare:

  • The application form.
  • NRIC or birth certificate.
  • A means-test declaration.
  • Verification of the travel purpose (school, work or training).
  • A medical assessment report, plus a Disability Verification Form if the disability has not yet been verified.

Neighbour’s Tips for Accessible Travel from Punggol

  • Ask about AIC first for medical trips. The doctor or medical social worker can apply for you, and subsidies may make it far cheaper than a private booking.
  • Write the chair’s details on your phone. Type, whether it folds and roughly how big it is. Every operator will ask.
  • Check lifts before a train trip. SG Enable points to the MyTransport.SG app for lift maintenance alerts. Our wheelchair train travel guide has the details.
  • Consider a Travel Buddy for buses and trains. See our guide to SBS Transit’s Travel Buddy programme.
  • Confirm the price when you book. Strides shows two fare tables on one page, so get the figure in writing or note it down.
  • Avoid the small hours if you can. CDG adds $12 between midnight and 5.59am.

If It Is Urgent

  • Life-threatening emergency: call 995 for an SCDF ambulance.
  • Non-emergency ambulance: 1777 works only until 31 December 2026; we could not confirm its fees, so ask when you call. MOH says the hotline ceases from 1 January 2027. After that, book a private ambulance operator (operators and fees are listed at go.gov.sg/pao) or call NurseFirst on 6262 6262 for advice. Our 995 and 1777 guide explains the change.
  • Not sure which hospital: our nearest hospitals guide explains where to go.
