Coney Island Park Guide | Opening Hours, Entrances, Beaches, Wildlife and What to Bring

Canal, children's playground and seating at Punggol Waterway Park beside Waterway Point

The short answer: Coney Island Park is an 81-hectare nature island at the northern edge of Punggol, linked to the mainland by two bridges. It is open daily from 7am to 7pm and is free. Enter from the West entrance near Punggol Point Walk or the East entrance near Lorong Halus Wetland. The nearest train station is Punggol Coast MRT, and there is no car park on the island itself.

Coney Island is the place Punggol goes to breathe. There are no shops, no playground and no aircon. What you get instead is a sandy track through casuarina woodland, quiet beaches facing Pulau Ubin, and the feeling of being very far from a housing estate while standing about 15 minutes from one.

Quick Facts

  • Opening hours: 7am to 7pm daily
  • Entry: free
  • Size: 81 hectares, with a 2.4km main path that is part of the park connector network
  • Entrances: West (near Punggol Point Walk) and East (near Lorong Halus Wetland)
  • Nearest MRT: Punggol Coast
  • Parking: none on the island; use the car park at The Punggol Settlement
  • Opened: 10 October 2015, managed by NParks

Which Entrance Should I Use?

  • West entrance is best if you are coming from Punggol Point, The Punggol Settlement car park, or the Punggol Heritage Trail. Pair it with dinner by the sea.
  • East entrance is best if you are cycling from Pasir Ris or combining the visit with Lorong Halus Wetland.
  • Walking end to end along the main path is about 2.4km. Most families walk in from one end, explore a beach or two, and walk back out the same way.

Bicycle parking is available at both entrances.

What to See and Do

  • Five themed beaches with quiet views across the water towards Pulau Ubin.
  • Boardwalks and mangroves where you can spot mudskippers and tree-climbing crabs at low tide.
  • Birdwatching: more than 80 bird species have been recorded here. Early morning is best.
  • Casuarina woodland and grassland that feel unlike anywhere else in Punggol.
  • Cycling: the main track is part of the park connector network, so it is a popular stretch on longer rides.

Wildlife: Look, Don’t Touch

Coney Island is a real habitat, not a landscaped garden. NParks lists wild boars, monkeys, stray dogs and even box jellyfish in the waters. Keep a respectful distance from all animals, do not feed the monkeys, and avoid carrying plastic bags or bottles openly, because monkeys have learned that plastic can mean food. Keep children close, especially on the beaches.

Park Rules to Know

  • Stay on marked trails and do not wander into the vegetation.
  • No camping and no fishing.
  • Do not feed any wildlife.
  • Plan to be out of the park by closing time at 7pm.

What to Bring

  • Plenty of water, packed away in a closed bag
  • Hat, sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Closed shoes; paths can be sandy or muddy after rain
  • A small rubbish bag to bring your trash back out
  • Binoculars if you have them

Is It Accessible for Prams and Wheelchairs?

NParks describes the East and West sections as wheelchair accessible and stroller-friendly, but some parts of the terrain are rugged. A sturdy stroller with bigger wheels will cope much better than a light travel pram.

A Little History

The island used to be called Pulau Serangoon. It was once owned by the Aw brothers, Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par, of Tiger Balm fame, and was sold in 1950 to a businessman who dreamed of turning it into a resort modelled on New York’s Coney Island. The resort never happened, but the name stuck. For the bigger debate about how Punggol grows around it, read Can Punggol Grow Without Losing Coney Island?

What’s Coming

An Outward Bound Singapore campus is being developed on the eastern part of the island, and Punggol’s first hotel, overlooking Coney Island from the Digital District, is due in the first half of 2027. The island itself remains a nature park.
