The short answer: the Cross Island Line Punggol Extension is a 7.3km, fully underground MRT line with four stations: Punggol, Riviera, Elias and Pasir Ris. Construction started in 2023 and the Land Transport Authority expects it to open by 2032. When it does, the trip from Punggol to Pasir Ris drops from about 40 minutes by bus to about 15 minutes by train.
If you live in Punggol, you already know the town’s one weakness. Almost every train journey starts on the North-East Line heading south. Want to get to Pasir Ris, Tampines or Changi? You go the long way round. The Punggol Extension is the fix, and it is worth understanding now, because it will quietly reshape where people choose to live, study and work in the north-east.
Quick Facts
- Line: Cross Island Line (CRL), Singapore’s eighth MRT line
- Length: 7.3km, fully underground
- Stations: Punggol, Riviera, Elias, Pasir Ris
- Expected opening: by 2032 (the first announcement in 2020 said 2031)
- Households served: more than 40,000 in Pasir Ris, Tampines North, Punggol and Sengkang
The Four Stations, One by One
1. Punggol
The Town Centre station becomes a three-way interchange: North-East Line, Punggol LRT and Cross Island Line. It is the heart of Punggol already. After 2032, it becomes the town’s main gateway east as well as south.
2. Riviera
Riviera is already a stop on the Punggol LRT East Loop (PE4). The new underground CRL station will connect to it, so residents in the Riviera and Coral Edge areas get a direct MRT link without first riding into Punggol Town Centre.
3. Elias
Elias is the only station on the extension that does not connect to an existing line. It will sit at the junction of Pasir Ris Drive 10 and Pasir Ris Drive 3, bringing rail within walking distance of Pasir Ris estates that have relied on buses for decades.
4. Pasir Ris
The extension ends at Pasir Ris, where it meets the East-West Line and the main CRL heading south through Tampines and beyond. For Punggol residents, this is the station that opens up the whole east.
How Much Faster Will Punggol Commutes Be?
LTA’s own estimates:
- Punggol to Pasir Ris: from about 40 minutes by bus to about 15 minutes by train
- Punggol North to Loyang Industrial Area: from about 45 minutes by bus to about 20 minutes by train
Those numbers matter most for three groups: workers in Loyang, Tampines and Changi; students heading to schools and tertiary institutions in the east; and families with grandparents in Pasir Ris or Tampines who currently make that awkward cross-town bus trip every weekend.
What It Means for Punggol
- A second direction. Punggol stops being a “one-line town.” If the North-East Line has a disruption, there will be another way out.
- A better deal for the east side of town. Riviera residents gain the most, with an MRT station at their doorstep.
- New school choices. Secondary and junior college options in Pasir Ris and Tampines become far easier to reach. That matters for families planning Secondary 1 and post-secondary choices in the early 2030s.
- Property talk. Expect estate agents to mention “future CRL” a lot. Treat it as one factor among many, and remember the opening date is still years away.
