No gas in your Punggol flat? If you cannot smell gas, call City Energy’s 24-hour hotline, 1800 752 1800, which takes reports of supply interruption and low pressure. If you can smell gas, shut the gas meter control valve, open the windows and doors, and call that number from a safe distance.
A cold stove at dinner time is a nuisance, not a danger, as long as there is no smell of gas. Work out which kind of problem you have, and the right call becomes clear.
This page is part of eduKate Punggol’s When You Need Help in Punggol, our practical guides for life’s occasions, big and small. It covers telling a supply problem from a cooker fault, who to call when there is no gas, booking City Energy after a move or renovation, and the rules on who may work on gas.
Quick answer
- Smell of gas: stop. Shut the gas meter control valve, open windows and doors, do not use switches or flames, and call 1800 752 1800 from a safe distance. Our gas leak guide has the full steps.
- No gas or a weak flame: City Energy’s emergency hotline, 1800 752 1800, open 24 hours.
- Cooker or appliance fault: your appliance supplier, a Licensed Gas Service Worker, or City Energy’s enquiry line, 1800 555 1661.
- New flat or just renovated: you need a gas supply appointment, booked by the utilities account holder.
- Cost and timing: City Energy publishes its rates online. Appointments less than four working days away carry an express service fee.
What to Do First When There Is No Gas
- Check for a smell of gas before anything else. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) says to make sure there is no smell of gas before lighting a gas appliance. If there is, leave the cooker alone and follow the leak steps above.
- Never test with a flame. EMA is direct about this: do not use a naked flame to detect a gas leak.
- Note exactly what you see. Is there no gas at all, a weak or uneven flame, or a cooker that clicks without lighting? Describing it clearly helps the person on the phone.
- Call the right line. City Energy’s 24-hour hotline takes reports of supply interruption and low pressure. For a non-working appliance, EMA says to consult your appliance supplier or call a licensed worker; City Energy’s enquiry line also helps with non-working piped gas appliances.
- Think about what has changed. A new flat, a recent renovation or a new cooker each has its own fix, covered below.
- Leave the work to licensed people. EMA says gas installation work in homes can only be carried out by City Energy or a Licensed Gas Service Worker, and only City Energy or its appointed agents may turn the piped town gas supply on or off.
- Keep the paperwork. After the job, EMA says the licensed worker will issue a written statement certifying that your gas appliance has been tested and is safe to use.

Which Situation Fits You
Nothing comes out, or the flame is weak
That points to the supply, so call City Energy on 1800 752 1800 at any hour. Its hotline page lists supply interruption and low pressure among the things to report there.
The cooker clicks but will not light
Treat this as an appliance fault. EMA’s route is your appliance supplier or a licensed worker, and City Energy’s enquiry line, 1800 555 1661, also helps with non-working piped gas appliances. Do not take the cooker apart yourself. EMA also says there should be no popping sound from the cooker when you use it; if you hear one, stop and have it checked.
You have just collected your keys
City Energy says a gas supply activation appointment is needed where the gas meter will be installed, and you will need a valid utilities account with SP Services first. Its FAQ adds that turning on the supply is included in the standard gas pipe installation or gas cooker connection fees. Our key collection day guide and moving house guide help you fit it into the move.
You have just renovated
Before renovation, City Energy temporarily terminates the supply and removes the meter. Its one-time termination charge includes restoring the supply and reconnecting afterwards, so book the restoration once the kitchen is finished.
You are not the account holder
From 1 January 2026, only the authorised account holder can schedule City Energy appointments. A tenant, an adult child helping a parent or anyone else needs an authorisation letter sent to appointments@cityenergy.com.sg first.
You have received a gas inspection notice
SP PowerGrid runs a periodic gas inspection programme for homes. If you receive a notice, act by the deadline in it. SP PowerGrid’s notice of 23 September 2025 gives at least four months from the letter and lists a fine of up to $10,000, up to 12 months’ jail, or both. EMA says missing the deadline has been an offence since 1 September 2025.
Gas Repair Costs and Rules
City Energy publishes rates for turning on and terminating the gas supply, extending or altering exposed gas pipes in HDB flats, work on gas appliances, service requests and its Gas Safety Support Plan. Prices change, so check the installation and contract services page live before you book.
- Express fee: City Energy charges one for appointments scheduled less than four working days from the date of request.
- Turn-on fee: included in the standard gas pipe installation or cooker connection fees, but a separate turn-on fee applies to units that already have a gas installation.
- Who may do the work: City Energy or a Licensed Gas Service Worker, for installing or altering gas pipes. All piped gas appliances must be installed by a licensed worker.
- Regular checks: EMA recommends having gas pipes and kitchen appliances checked by a Licensed Gas Service Worker once every five years.
- Buying a cooker: EMA says to buy one with a SAFETY Mark label.
Neighbour’s Tips
- Know where your meter control valve is. EMA asks residents to keep access to it clear, so do not store boxes or bins in front of it.
- Book early. Four working days’ notice avoids City Energy’s express fee.
- Sort the authorisation letter before you need it. If you manage a parent’s flat or rent your home, get the letter done on a quiet day, not when the stove has died.
- New owners: open the SP Services account first. City Energy will not book an appointment without one.
- Check the worker’s licence. EMA’s ELISE portal lets you confirm a Licensed Gas Service Worker before they start.
- Ask for the written statement. A licensed worker should certify that the appliance was tested and is safe. File it with your home papers.
- Put a five-year reminder in your phone. That is EMA’s recommended interval for checking gas pipes and kitchen appliances.
If It’s Urgent or Gets Worse
If you smell gas at any point, EMA’s steps are: shut the gas meter control valve, open all windows and doors, put out any flames, do not operate switches or appliances, and call City Energy on 1800 752 1800 from a safe distance. Call 995 for a fire or if anyone is hurt.
If an elderly neighbour has no gas and is unsure what to do, help them make the call and check there is no smell first. Our household emergency readiness list is a good place to keep these numbers together.
