Child’s Fever at Night in Punggol: What to Do and Where to Go

Waterway Point and Watertown framed by trees and evening light

For a child’s fever at night in Punggol, call 995 if your child is struggling to breathe, will not respond or is having a fit. A baby under 3 months with a temperature above 38°C needs Children’s Emergency straight away. An alert child who is drinking well can usually be seen by a family doctor.

A hot, unsettled child in the small hours is frightening for any parent. Take a slow breath: how your child looks and behaves tells you more than the number on the thermometer.

This page is part of eduKate Punggol’s When You Need Help in Punggol, our practical guides for life’s occasions, big and small. It covers caring for a feverish child at home tonight, the warning signs that mean Children’s Emergency or 995, where Punggol families can turn after dark, and what each option costs.

Quick answer

  • Call 995 if your child is struggling to breathe, has blue, purple or grey lips or skin, is unresponsive, or is having a fit.
  • Go to Children’s Emergency now for a baby under 3 months with a temperature above 38°C, any child above 41°C, or a child who is hard to wake, confused, very lethargic or cannot be settled.
  • Alert, drinking and over 3 months? Keep them cool and see a GP. Our late-night GP guide lists Punggol options.
  • Need advice first? NurseFirst on 6262 6262 runs 8am–11pm daily. KKH also has a free online advice service, U-PAL.
  • Nearest A&E: Sengkang General Hospital, 24 hours, but children may be transferred to KKH. NUH’s Children’s Emergency is open 24 hours.
  • Cost guide: NUH’s Children’s Urgent Care Clinic charges citizens S$107 (from 1 September 2026); a KK TelePaeds video consultation costs $100.

What to Do First for a Fever at Night

Work down this list in order. The first step takes seconds.

  1. Check for emergency signs. HealthHub lists these as reasons to call 995: choking or a severe allergic reaction, stopped breathing or struggling to breathe, blue, purple or grey skin or lips, unusual paleness and clamminess, and being unresponsive or unconscious, including a seizure. If you see any of them, call 995 now.
  2. Look at your child, not just the number. KKH says the height of a fever alone does not show how ill a child is. A child who is alert, active and keeping fluids down may be treated by a family or polyclinic doctor.
  3. Take the temperature properly. HealthHub counts a temperature above 38°C as a fever. Use an armpit thermometer for babies under 4 weeks, and the armpit or ear from 4 weeks old.
  4. Cool your child gently. Dress them in thin clothing, cool the room and sponge them with lukewarm water. HealthHub says do not use ice water or cold water, do not sponge for more than 30 minutes at a time, and do not wrap a child in thick blankets to “sweat it out”.
  5. Offer plenty of fluids and let them rest. Notice how much your child drinks and passes urine: HealthHub lists drinking much less and passing much less urine than usual as a warning sign.
  6. Ask before giving fever medicine. HealthHub says fever medicines may be given after seeking medical advice. Ask a doctor which medicine and how much suits your child.
  7. Decide where to go, and keep watching. Use the table below, and look again every so often.

HealthHub says to go to Children’s Emergency immediately if your child:

  • has a temperature above 41.0°C, or above 38.0°C if under 3 months old;
  • is difficult to wake, or does not respond to you when awake;
  • seems confused or delirious, or cries constantly and cannot be settled;
  • has difficulty breathing or is very lethargic;
  • has pale or grey skin, or bruising or spots;
  • has a fit (seizure or convulsion);
  • is drinking much less and passing much less urine than usual.

Which Situation Fits You

Your baby is under 3 months old

HealthHub says babies under three months need immediate medical attention for a fever above 38°C, and KKH also flags any fever or illness in an infant this young. Do not wait for morning. Go to Children’s Emergency, or call 995 if any emergency sign is present.

Your child has a fit with the fever

KKH’s advice is to stay calm and place the child on their side so they do not choke on secretions. Move hard or sharp objects out of the way. Do not put anything into the child’s mouth, not even a spoon or your finger, and do not give medicine by mouth while the child is drowsy. HealthHub lists a fit as a reason to go to Children’s Emergency immediately, and MOH lists seizures as a 995 emergency, so call 995.

KKH notes that these fits usually come with high fevers, especially at 38.5°C or more, and says to always bring your child to the doctor if in doubt.

Your child is alert, playing and drinking

KKH says that for a non-emergency, a family doctor or polyclinic is “faster, cheaper and your child will still get the relevant treatment”. KKH and NUH also encourage parents to use GPs in their PaedsENGAGE network for mild to moderate conditions; these clinics show a PaedsENGAGE decal. We could not confirm which Punggol clinics take part.

It is late and you are not sure

NurseFirst on 6262 6262 is staffed by nurses until 11pm. KKH’s U-PAL gives free online advice, which KKH says is “designed to complement, not replace, professional medical consultation”. If you are worried your child’s life is at risk, call 995 rather than waiting for advice.

The fever has lasted a few days

HealthHub says to seek medical attention if the fever stays persistently high for a few days, or if your child seems to be getting worse. Bring your notes on temperatures and drinks to the GP.

You have other children asleep at home

Decide now who would mind them if you had to leave at 3am. Our guide to babysitting and emergency childcare in Punggol has options.

What It Costs to Get Help at Night

  • NUH Children’s Urgent Care Clinic: S$107 for Singapore Citizens from 1 September 2026, and S$120 for PRs and others, covering the consultation, X-rays and basic tests. Since 28 February 2026, medications are charged separately. Card, NETS or PayNow only.
  • KK TelePaeds: $100 per video consultation, including standard medication, plus $6 for delivery. Prices are subject to change.
  • PaedsENGAGE referral: if a participating GP refers your child to KKH or NUH Children’s Emergency, you get $50 off the Children’s Emergency fee. Bring the original stamped referral form and your child’s birth certificate. It is valid for up to 12 hours.
  • Sengkang General Hospital A&E: S$171 attendance fee from 1 October 2025. MediSave cannot be used for the emergency bill.
  • KKH Children’s Emergency: the attendance fee is not stated on the KKH pages we checked, so ask KKH.

The GPFirst scheme, which gives $50 off at several emergency departments with a participating GP’s original referral form, does not include KKH. For children, PaedsENGAGE is the equivalent.

Neighbour’s Tips

  • Write it down. Note times, temperatures, drinks and wet nappies on your phone, so you can tell the doctor what has changed.
  • Bring the child, not just a description. NUH’s urgent care clinic needs the child to be there at registration.
  • Expect to wait if your child is stable. KKH sees the sickest children first. Pack water, a charger and a favourite toy.
  • Keep that referral form safe. A PaedsENGAGE referral saves $50, but only with the original form and within 12 hours.
  • Do not count on cash at NUH. Its urgent care clinic takes card, NETS or PayNow only.
  • Save two numbers today: NurseFirst on 6262 6262 and KKH’s 24-hour enquiries line, 6225 5554.

If It’s Urgent or Gets Worse

Call 995 straight away if your child stops breathing or struggles to breathe, has blue, purple or grey lips or skin, becomes unresponsive, or has a fit. KKH’s own advice is the same: in an emergency, call 995 or go to the nearest paediatric emergency department.

Since 1 June 2025, MOH has been transferring 995 calls that are not life-threatening to the NurseFirst helpline between 8am and 11pm, so describe clearly what you see. The 1777 non-emergency ambulance hotline works only until 31 December 2026; MOH says it ceases from 1 January 2027. Our 995 and 1777 guide explains the change.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature counts as a fever in a child?

HealthHub counts a temperature above 38°C as a fever. KKH adds that the height of a fever alone does not show how ill a child is.

Should I take my child to Sengkang General Hospital at night?

Its emergency department is open 24 hours and sees all ages, but Sengkang General Hospital has no inpatient paediatric wards, and under-16s may be transferred to KKH after being stabilised. If your child’s life may be at risk, call 995.

When should I give fever medicine?

HealthHub says fever medicines may be given after seeking medical advice. Ask a doctor which medicine to use and how much. We do not give doses on this page.

Is a fever in a young baby an emergency?

Yes, for babies under 3 months. HealthHub says a temperature above 38°C at this age needs immediate medical attention at Children’s Emergency.

Is there a children’s emergency clinic in Punggol?

We could not find one. For an alert child, our guide to 24-hour and late-night GP clinics lists the Punggol options. NUH’s Children’s Urgent Care Clinic in Bukit Panjang is open until 11pm, and the children’s emergency departments are at KKH and NUH.
