Making an Insurance Claim: A Step-by-Step Guide for Punggol Households

Punggol condominium and wet road during rain

To make an insurance claim from Punggol, deal with any emergency first, make a police report for theft or loss, then tell your insurer promptly in writing. Life insurers ask for written notice within 30 days of the event; motor accidents need reporting within 24 hours or by the next working day.

Claims can feel like an exam you did not study for. In truth they are mostly about timing and paperwork, and both are easy to get right with a list in hand.

This page is part of eduKate Punggol’s When You Need Help in Punggol, our practical guides for life’s occasions, big and small. It is a general walkthrough for home, travel, hospital, motor and life claims, with the timelines insurers follow and what to do if you disagree. For HDB fire insurance and home contents, see our dedicated guide.

Quick answer

  • Emergency first: call 995 for injury or fire, and 999 for a crime in progress.
  • Report it: make a police report for theft or loss. Overseas, report it there and claim when you return.
  • Notify in writing, early: life insurers ask for notice within 30 days of the event. General insurers acknowledge a claim within 3 business days of receiving it.
  • Hospital bills: tell the admission staff you want to claim MediShield Life. With an Integrated Shield Plan, your insurer pays the hospital directly.
  • Car accident: report to your insurer within 24 hours or by the next working day, even for a small accident settled privately.
  • If you disagree: complain to the insurer first, then go to FIDReC within 6 months of its final reply. Filing a complaint with FIDReC is free.

How to Make an Insurance Claim, Step by Step

The order is the same for most types of insurance. Only the deadlines change.

  1. Make everyone safe. Call 995 for injuries or fire and 999 for crime. The claim can wait an hour; people cannot.
  2. Record the damage. Take photos before you move or clean anything. For a car accident, GIA says not to move your vehicle before photographing the scene.
  3. Make a police report if something was stolen or lost. The online police report asks for serial numbers and photos of missing items, so have them ready.
  4. Find your policy. The claims hotline or portal is in your policy documents. Check what is covered, the excess and any deadlines.
  5. Notify the insurer in writing. Do it as early as you can, even if you do not yet have every document.
  6. Send supporting documents. Receipts, reports, medical bills and photos. GIA says that without supporting documents such as purchase receipts, the claim amount may be adjusted.
  7. Keep every letter and email. If you later disagree with the outcome, the dates in this paper trail matter.

Which Situation Fits You

Damage at home

Check which policy applies before you claim. GIA notes that the contents of a property are usually not covered by a building fire policy. Our HDB fire insurance and home contents guide and smoke damage claims guide cover home claims in detail.

Theft or loss while travelling

GIA’s advice is to make a police report where it happened and submit your claim when you return, with documents such as purchase receipts. Our guide to travel delays, exclusions and claims covers travel policies.

A hospital stay

Without an Integrated Shield Plan, tell the admission staff you want to claim MediShield Life; the hospital submits the claim, and the payout offsets part of the bill. The rest can be paid with MediSave, up to its limits, and/or cash. With an Integrated Shield Plan, your private insurer processes the claim and pays the hospital on your behalf.

A car accident

Exchange particulars and note vehicle numbers, photograph the scene and all vehicles, and call your insurer’s hotline for a tow truck or advice. Report to your insurer within 24 hours or by the next working day, and take the vehicle to an approved reporting centre or authorised workshop within 24 hours. GIA reminds motorists that a Traffic Police report is not the same as reporting to your insurer.

A child hurt at school

School accident cover has its own process. Our school accident insurance claim guide walks you through it.

A claim after a death in the family

LIA says it cannot enquire with insurers on your behalf, so contact each insurer directly. For life policies, interest is payable if a death claim is paid more than two months after written notice of the death. Our guide to probate, bank accounts and CPF after a death covers the wider paperwork.

Insurer Timelines and Your Rights

Life insurers follow LIA’s guidance, and general insurers (home, travel, motor) follow the GIA Code of Practice (revised October 2022).

StageLife insurers (LIA)General insurers (GIA Code)
Acknowledging your claimCommonly within 7 daysWithin 3 business days
Asking for more informationCommonly within 14 daysWithin 7 business days, if documents are incomplete
DecidingWithin 21 days of receiving full informationWithin 7 business days of receiving all information and completing the investigation
PayingWithin 14 days of all documents, for straightforward casesWithin 10 business days of agreeing the settlement
Handling a complaintAcknowledged within 2 business days; final response within 30 business daysAcknowledged within 7 business days; appeal to the Chief Executive answered within 15 business days

LIA says insurers will not unreasonably reject a claim; grounds include fraud, deception or deliberately giving false information. If a policy was bought with CPF or SRS money and a claim is paid while you are alive, the law requires the payout to go into your CPF or SRS account.

If you still disagree after the insurer’s final reply, FIDReC can help. Filing a complaint is free, though an adjudication case fee applies if the case goes to adjudication; we could not confirm the amount, so check with FIDReC. You must file within 6 months of the final reply, and the insurer must first have had the chance to resolve it. Mediation has no claim limit, and adjudication covers up to S$150,000 per claim for claims filed from 1 July 2024. FIDReC says most cases are resolved within 6 months. It does not handle pricing or commercial decisions, cases already decided by a court, or complaints settled privately.

Neighbour’s Tips

  • Photograph first, tidy later. Pictures of the damage before anything is moved are the strongest evidence you have.
  • Keep receipts and serial numbers somewhere safe. A folder in your email or phone works. Missing receipts can mean a smaller payout.
  • Write, do not just call. A short email after each phone call records what was said and when.
  • Watch the 6-month clock. FIDReC’s deadline starts from the insurer’s final reply, not from the incident.
  • Be wary at accident scenes. GIA warns against unauthorised tow trucks and advises caution before signing any documents you are handed.
  • Use Myinfo for motor reports. GIA’s Myinfo Reporting lets Singpass users pre-fill the accident report and upload photos before going to the reporting centre.
  • Check your nominations. While you have your policies out, our CPF nominations guide is worth a look too.

If It’s Urgent or Gets Worse

Call 995 for any injury or fire, and 999 (or SMS 70999) for a crime in progress. At a road accident with injured people, GIA’s advice is to call for medical assistance and the Police immediately. The insurance claim always comes after everyone is safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon must I tell my insurer?

For life policies, LIA says to give written notice within 30 days of the event, or as soon as possible. For motor accidents, within 24 hours or by the next working day. For other policies, check your policy wording and notify as early as you can.

Do I need a police report to make an insurance claim?

For theft or loss, it is the safe course. GIA says to make a police report first for loss or theft while travelling. For a break-in at home, the online police report asks for serial numbers and photos of missing items, which are useful for a claim too.

Do I have to report a small car accident?

Yes. GIA says all motorists must report any accident, no matter how small, even if it is settled privately, for record purposes.

What if my claim is rejected?

Ask for the reasons in writing and complain to the insurer. If you are still unhappy after its final reply, you can take the case to FIDReC within 6 months.

Does HDB fire insurance cover my furniture?

Usually not. GIA notes that the contents of a property are usually not covered by a building fire policy. Our HDB fire insurance guide explains what is covered.

Is FIDReC free?

Filing a complaint is free. An adjudication case fee applies if your case goes to adjudication; check the current amount with FIDReC.
