How to Book Pet Boarding or a Sitter Safely
- Check the registry. Find the boarder on AVS’s public registry, and ask for its licence number, such as “BD25…”.
- Match the boarder to your animal. Check that it is licensed for your kind of pet, because several take only cats, only dogs or only small animals.
- Ask the important questions. Ask about vaccination and health requirements, feeding, how animals are kept apart, and what happens if your pet falls ill. Our pet licensing explainer has a fuller checklist.
- Visit before you book. See where your pet will sleep, eat and play.
- Book early for the holidays. The year-end school holidays run from Saturday 21 November to Thursday 31 December 2026, when many families travel.
- For a sitter, stay on the platform. Pawshake says its guarantee (vet care cover and 7-day support) applies only when you book and pay through Pawshake.
- Leave clear contacts. Give the boarder or sitter your vet’s details, a local back-up contact and the AVS number, 1800-476-1600.
What to Pack for Your Pet
- Enough of your pet’s usual food for the whole stay, plus a few extra days.
- Medicines, with the dose and times written down.
- Vaccination records, if the boarder asks for them.
- Your vet’s name and phone number, and your pet’s microchip number.
- A familiar blanket or toy that smells of home.
- A carrier or lead, labelled with your phone number.
- For a home sitter: a spare key you hand over in person, and a note about where everything is kept.
Costs
- Licensed boarders: prices were not verified. Ask each operator, and ask what is included.
- Pawshake sitters: each sitter sets their own price. Punggol doggy day-care listings were around S$20 to S$50 a day when we checked in October 2026 (check live).
- Not a boarding service: AVS’s Animal Management Centre charges S$16.50 a night, but only for impounded animals being reclaimed.
How Pet Boarding Licensing Works
AVS licenses commercial pet boarding. To get a licence, an operator must complete AVS-recognised training on pet welfare and animal management, submit layout plans and cage designs, pass an AVS inspection and pay a $100 annual licence fee. AVS says no animals can be boarded before final approval. AVS tightened its licensing conditions from 1 April 2022, and each licensed facility is inspected at least once a year. The AVS pages we checked do not say whether home-based pet sitters need a licence, so ask any sitter what checks they have had.
