Which Option Fits Your Family
Your family member is in hospital and cannot go home safely
Start with the ward’s medical social worker. AIC and NTUC Health both describe subsidised admissions going through a medical social worker, who applies to AIC for your preferred homes.
Care at home is getting too much
AIC says nursing homes are for people who cannot be cared for at home even after trying day care or home care. If you have not tried those yet, see our home nursing and home care page and the SLEC senior care centres above.
Dementia care
SLEC Residence @ Punggol lists memory care, and Grace Lodge has a female dementia ward. Ask every home on your list how it cares for residents with dementia.
The caregiver needs a break
Nursing Home Respite Care offers short stays at selected homes, for a caregiver’s rest, a helper’s home leave, or a break from night care. The senior must be medically stable, with a plan to return home. Our caregiver wellbeing and respite guide has more.
You plan to pay privately
NTUC Health says private applicants without an MOH subsidy can apply to its homes directly. Ask each home whether it takes private admissions.
How to Apply for a Nursing Home, Step by Step
- Talk it through as a family. Include your loved one as far as you can, and agree on what matters most to them.
- Check the need. AIC’s nursing homes are for people with a physical or mental disability from illness who cannot move around or manage daily living without help.
- Get a referral. From a hospital, polyclinic or GP, or a medical social worker who knows the condition. You can also get help at an AIC Link, or call 1800 650 6060.
- Prepare for the means test. Subsidies depend on household income per person, or your home’s Annual Value if there is no income.
- List more than one home. St. Andrew’s notes that admission depends on bed availability, so a longer list helps.
- Visit and ask questions. Call ahead, then ask about care, meals, activities, visiting and extra charges.
- Plan the move. Bring familiar things, label belongings, and agree a visiting rhythm within the family.
What to Prepare
- NRIC of the person who will move in.
- Recent medical reports and the discharge summary, if any. Respite applications need a medical report dated within six months.
- A full list of medicines, doses and allergies.
- Household income documents for the means test.
- Contact details for the main family decision-maker.
- A short note on routines, food likes and dislikes, and what comforts them.
Costs and Subsidies for Nursing Homes near Punggol
- AIC’s guide: basic cost from $3,900 a month before subsidies, depending on the level of care. Deposits and other charges may apply. See AIC’s nursing home page.
- St. Andrew’s Nursing Home: $3,720 to $5,146 a month before subsidy, by care level. One-time admin fee $163.50 including GST, and a $500 refundable deposit. Hospitalisation and non-standard procedures or medicines cost extra.
- NTUC Health (its own homes, for comparison): $756 to $5,400 a month, with subsidies covering up to 80% for those who qualify.
- Respite care: daily room and board from $131 (open ward) before subsidies, per AIC’s respite page.
- Bright Hill Evergreen Home, SLEC Residence and Grace Lodge: we could not verify their fees. Ask each home.
- SMF: the Seniors’ Mobility and Enabling Fund does not apply to nursing home residents.
Neighbour’s Tips for Families
- Start with the medical social worker if your family member is warded. Subsidised applications go to AIC through them, so they are the natural first call.
- Book respite early. AIC asks for applications at least four weeks before the start date.
- Budget beyond the monthly fee. Deposits, admin fees, consumables and hospital stays can add up.
- Check AIC information at the source. AIC warns that incorrect information about its schemes is circulating, so use its website or hotline.
- Think about the visiting trip. A home close to the family’s flats means more visits, more often.
- Note what changes with SMF. SMF is only for seniors not living in a nursing home, so ask the home how equipment and consumables are handled and charged.
- Look after yourselves. Guilt is common. A good home and regular visits are an act of care, not the end of it.
If It Is Urgent
Nursing homes are not emergency placements, and admission takes time. If someone is unwell or unsafe right now, call 995 or go to an Emergency Department; our nearest hospitals guide explains where. Once they are in hospital, ask the medical social worker about the next step. For questions about schemes, call the AIC Hotline on 1800 650 6060.
