Bus Guide | Where to Go, What to Do | Interesting Places SBS Transit Bus Service 48 Goes To

Where does SBS Transit Bus Service 48 go, and what interesting places can you visit? Bus 48 runs from the public roadside stop at Blk 3014 in Bedok North Avenue 4 through Bedok Market Place, Tanah Merah MRT, Bayshore, Siglap and Marine Parade, then crosses towards Bugis, Little India, Newton Food Centre, Stevens MRT, the Singapore Botanic Gardens Bukit Timah Entrance, Farrer Road and Holland Village. A useful outing might be a confirmed Newton Food Centre meal, a public Botanic Gardens visit, or a short Marine Parade or Holland Village errand.

Two details make this route easy to misunderstand. SBS Transit prints Bedok North Depot and Buona Vista Terminal as its operating endpoints but expressly says no passenger boarding or alighting is allowed at either. The first practical eastbound origin-side passenger stop is 84431 Blk 3014; from the Holland/Buona Vista end, use permitted public roadside stops such as 11381 Blk 10A on the return. There is also a 5.6-kilometre no-stop sector between the citybound Tanjong Katong stop and Bugis: Bus 48 does not stop at the National Stadium or Suntec on the way.

Quick route summary: citybound from Bedok North: 84431 Blk 3014 → 85069 Bedok Market Place → 85099 Tanah Merah Exit 1 → 94039 Bayshore Exit 3 → 93039 Siglap → 92059 Marine Parade Exit 6 → 82059 Tanjong Katong Exit 3 → no-stop ECP connection → 01541 Bugis Exit D → 40011 Little India Exit A → 40031 Newton Food Centre → 40081 Stevens Exit 1 → 41021 Botanic Gardens Stn → 11119 Farrer Road Exit A → 11419 Holland Village Exit A → 11389 Buona Vista CC. The normal Bedok North-side first/last is 5.30am–11.30pm daily; the Buona Vista operating-end timetable is 6am–midnight daily, but use actual public stop arrivals.

Bus 48 quick route facts, restrictions and timing

  • Current operator: SBS Transit. The operator publishes two directional route tables under Service 48.
  • Operating endpoints: Bedok North Depot and Buona Vista Terminal, neither open for passenger boarding/alighting.
  • First passenger stop from the east: 84431 Blk 3014, Bedok North Avenue 4. First permitted roadside stop after the Buona Vista operating origin: 11381 Blk 10A.
  • Operating first/last: Bedok North-side 5.30am/11.30pm daily; Buona Vista operating side 6am/midnight daily. Origin timetables are not precise departures at an intermediate roadside shelter.
  • Published outward length: approximately 24.4km, with the exact 2026 operator table offering stop-by-stop distances.
  • No-stop sector: citybound 82059 Bef Tg Katong Stn Exit 3 at 9.3km, then 01541 Bugis Stn Exit D at 14.9km: about 5.6km without a published passenger stop.
  • Eastern rail: Tanah Merah EW4, Bayshore TE29, Siglap TE28, Marine Terrace TE27, Marine Parade TE26 and Tanjong Katong TE25.
  • Central rail: Bugis EW12/DT14, Rochor DT13, Little India NE7/DT12, Newton NS21/DT11 and Stevens DT10/TE11.
  • Gardens and west: 41021 Botanic Gdns Stn near Bukit Timah Entrance, Farrer Road MRT and Holland Village MRT.
  • Current November hawker notices: Holland Village Market/Food Centre cleaning 23 Nov 2026; Empress Road Market/Food Centre cleaning 30 Nov–2 Dec 2026. The named Empress Market stop is on the Buona Vista-to-Bedok direction.
  • Important exclusions: no National Stadium, Suntec City, Orchard Road MRT, Punggol MRT, Changi Airport terminal or public boarding inside either named terminal.

Where to alight: current official bus stop codes

The table is based on SBS Transit’s 2026 directional stopping lists. A stop code identifies a legal bus shelter, not a museum ticket, working food stall, university visitor permit, park gate or universally accessible walking route. Always verify the last mile.

Why the two terminals do not function like public interchanges

Many Singapore bus route names refer to a public interchange where passengers can enter a waiting hall, find a boarding berth and alight safely. Service 48 has a different arrangement. SBS Transit names Bedok North Depot and Buona Vista Terminal as the operating origins/termini but explicitly states that neither allows passenger boarding or alighting. A traveller should treat the named operational end as a vehicle scheduling location, not a public destination.

On the Bedok North side, the outward table begins its passenger sequence with 84431 Blk 3014 on Bedok North Avenue 4. The depot itself is not a tourist attraction or an appropriate waiting area. Do not follow a map’s route endpoint into a working bus facility or ask the driver to let you off at a restricted gate.

On the Buona Vista side, the last public road stop towards the terminal is 11389 Buona Vista CC. In the opposite direction, the first permitted road stop after the operating terminal is 11381 Blk 10A. These two positions are useful to know before travelling because an ordinary timetable headline may say ‘Buona Vista Ter’ even though passenger access happens at nearby roads.

Bus 32 also has a no-boarding rule at Buona Vista Terminal, but it follows a different route through Fort Canning and Margaret Drive. A shared operational endpoint does not make two services interchangeable for Botanic Gardens, Marine Parade or the city. The correct route is the one with a public stop at the chosen destination, not simply the one whose title mentions a familiar station.

The expressway gap between Tanjong Katong and Bugis

The official citybound stop table provides an unusually clear warning. Service 48 lists 82059 Bef Tg Katong Stn Exit 3 at about 9.3 kilometres of route distance, then 01541 Bugis Stn Exit D at 14.9 kilometres. That is a gap of approximately 5.6 kilometres without an ordinary passenger stop.

This matters because the bus travels through a city-edge fast-road section, passing geographically near areas that other east–west buses serve more directly. A user looking at a zoomed-out map might think that a route line near the National Stadium or Suntec makes those places suitable places to alight. It does not. There are no listed passenger stops within that segment of Service 48.

A bus can travel a major road without stopping there, and passengers cannot leave at an expressway shoulder or slip road. If the intended destination is the National Stadium or Suntec, choose a service with actual named stops, such as the relevant sections of Bus 14 or Bus 16, or take an appropriate rail connection.

For families, this creates a practical preparation point. Decide whether the visit is in Marine Parade or Bugis before the bus enters the long gap. A child who needs a rest or toilet cannot expect an unscheduled alighting. A person going to a fixed appointment should allow a traffic margin: a road with no stops is not automatically immune to congestion.

Bedok Market Place and Tanah Merah: everyday purposes before the coastal corridor

The earliest Bus 48 passenger stops serve working and residential sections of Bedok North and Upper Changi Road. The service then passes 85069 Bedok Mkt Pl on Bedok Road and 85099 Tanah Merah Stn Exit 1 on New Upper Changi Road. These are useful for food, shopping, legitimate appointments and rail connections.

Bedok Market Place is a district food and shopping reference, not Bedok Bus Interchange. If a traveller tells another person to wait at the Bedok MRT boarding hall, they may be waiting in the wrong place. Use the exact five-digit public stop and a nearby public meeting point.

Tanah Merah station is EW4, connected to the East–West Line and airport branch. Service 48 does not itself enter Changi Airport Terminals 1–4. A flight traveller must select the correct onward train or terminal-serving bus rather than assume that a road named Upper Changi Road reaches the passenger check-in counter.

For a simple meal outing, check the actual outlet’s operating hours and the correct crossing. A bus stop named for a food district does not guarantee that a particular dish is available. The family can complete its errand and return without continuing to Holland Village merely because the bus does.

Bayshore, Siglap, Marine Terrace and Marine Parade are distinct MRT access points

Service 48 travels along Upper East Coast Road and Marine Parade Road, serving 94039 Bayshore Stn Exit 3, 93039 Siglap Stn/Laguna Park, 92079 Marine Terrace Stn Exit 1 and 92059 Marine Parade Stn Exit 6. These are four different station and street catchments on the Thomson–East Coast Line.

A passenger whose destination is a school, housing block or shopping centre must choose the actual correct station and road side. Marine Parade MRT and Marine Terrace MRT are separate places, and a bus stop near Victoria School does not grant access to the school grounds. The best travel option depends on the building entrance and whether the trip involves a registration or appointment.

Marine Parade also has a public shopping option near Parkway Parade, with the route serving 92049 Marine Pde Stn/Pkway Pde. A family could choose one indoor errand or a meal there without adding a coastal walk. Individual retail tenants can have different hours and unavailable services; check the chosen shop rather than assume the mall’s general schedule governs everything.

On the reverse Bedok-bound route, the corresponding Marine Parade codes are 92041 Marine Pde Stn Exit 2 and 92051 Exit 4. At Siglap the reverse code is 93031, and at Bayshore 94031. A road-side bus stop on the opposite direction can be a different distance from the chosen building. Save the actual reverse stop before leaving the venue.

East Coast Park is not automatically reached from any Marine Parade Road shelter

One common mistake is to treat any bus travelling near the east coast as a beach-park bus. Service 48 runs inland on Upper East Coast Road and Marine Parade Road. NParks locates East Coast Park along the East Coast Parkway and East Coast Park Service Road, with many entrances spread over more than 13 kilometres. A route near the coast does not mean the bus drives past every beach, toilet or carpark.

Choose the actual park area and activity first, then examine the public pedestrian access. Some places require an underpass or a longer walk. A family with a stroller, wheelchair or older relative may prefer a different stop and crossing, or another service that better serves the selected park entrance.

Current November 2026 NParks notices include a footpath closure in Area D through 30 November, a path near Carpark C4 under works through 21 November and the Area C1 dog-run closure through 6 November. These are specific restrictions, not the closure of the whole park. An old digital route may still show a path that is temporarily barricaded.

Weather and coastal conditions are separate. A park may remain open while a thunderstorm makes a walk unsuitable or marine wildlife advisories make entering the water unwise. A realistic family plan is one manageable public space and a return path, not an unsupported promise of swimming or access to any beach visible from a map.

Bugis: the first stop after the long citybound no-stop section

The operator’s citybound list resumes at 01541 Bugis Stn Exit D on Rochor Road after the approximately 5.6km no-stop sector. This is a useful access point for the East–West and Downtown Lines and the wider Bugis retail district. It is not a stop at the National Stadium or Suntec, which the bus has passed without stopping.

A visitor can choose a shop, a public cultural exhibition or a rail transfer. Bugis has several station exits and shopping developments, so a meeting message should give a specific entrance or retail unit rather than simply saying ‘Bugis’. A conference or gallery visit can require separate entry rules or a registration.

On the Bedok-bound reverse direction, the first city-to-coast route through Bugis uses 01559 Village Hotel Bugis and 01549 Opp DUO Residences on Ophir Road before an expressway segment back to Tanjong Katong. This is different from the citybound 01541 stop, and a person should not automatically return to the same road side after a shopping trip.

A useful transport-learning exercise is to compare the route map with the stop list and mark the actual city stop on either side. The physical road line and the passenger’s available alighting points are different layers of information. Understanding that difference prevents wrong destinations far beyond this one route.

Rochor, Little India and Newton: choose a real public learning or food destination

From Bugis, Bus 48 heads via Rochor and Bukit Timah Road, calling at 07531 Rochor Stn, 40011 Little India Stn Exit A and 40031 Newton FC. These provide rail and public heritage or food opportunities along different neighbourhood streets.

Little India is a living commercial and religious district. A family can follow one short public heritage route, observe architecture and choose a current food outlet. Places of worship have visitor rules; do not treat every building as an open gallery. Read a trustworthy historical account for dates and context rather than guessing from an exterior.

Newton Food Centre is a real named Bus 48 stop and a significant part of Singapore’s hawker culture. The National Heritage Board documents its history as one of the older purpose-built hawker centres, with earlier links to Orchard’s street-food trade. That makes it possible to combine an actual meal with one grounded historical question about how hawking changed as Singapore developed.

Nevertheless, different Newton stallholders keep their own operating hours, prices and rest days. A bus route cannot guarantee a particular meal or seafood price. Check the displayed menu and choose an outlet whose food and cost suit the group. A simple meal and rail return may be a more comfortable outing than attempting the entire journey to Holland Village.

Stevens MRT and the NUS Bukit Timah Campus: not public free-access buildings

After Newton, the route continues along Bukit Timah Road through 40081 Stevens Stn Exit 1 and later 41011 NUS Bt Timah Campus. Stevens is a transfer point for the Downtown and Thomson–East Coast Lines; the university campus is a separate educational site with its own building addresses.

A school open house, university lecture or professional appointment can be a legitimate reason to ride the bus, but these require real event information and a permitted visitor entrance. A school or university stop is not an invitation into lecture theatres, staff offices, residences or laboratories. The exact campus matters: NUS Bukit Timah and Kent Ridge are different locations.

For families comparing secondary and post-secondary study opportunities, use confirmed public programmes and official institution information rather than an informal walk through controlled buildings. Good questions include the purpose of a programme, learning prerequisites and actual progression pathways, not promises based on a general campus name.

A person needing step-free access should also check the route from the bus shelter to the authorised building entrance. A rail interchange being nearby does not establish a level pedestrian path to every private or institutional destination.

Singapore Botanic Gardens: this is the Bukit Timah Entrance, not Tanglin

One of the strongest Service 48 destinations is 41021 Botanic Gdns Stn on Bukit Timah Road, near the Bukit Timah Entrance of the Singapore Botanic Gardens and the Circle/Downtown Line interchange CC19/DT9. NParks explicitly lists Bus 48 among the public buses serving the Bukit Timah and Dunearn Road entrances.

The Gardens have multiple entrance areas. A Bus 7 or another service through Napier Road may lead towards the Tanglin Entrance, while Service 48’s named stop is associated with Bukit Timah. The National Orchid Garden is a separate internal ticketed venue, not the bus shelter. A family should identify its actual selected garden activity before travelling.

NParks lists general Gardens opening from 5am to midnight with free ordinary entry. The National Orchid Garden has separate opening and ticketing, while Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden has age and accompaniment rules and its own opening schedule. On 5 November 2026 NParks posts a one-day closure of the Tan Hoon Siang Mist House for tree works. An open park does not make every internal attraction available.

For a manageable visit, pick one section near the appropriate entrance. Children can observe leaf shapes, different habitats or landscape planning without touching plants or feeding wildlife. Choose a short route, a shaded rest and a comfortable return. A longer all-Gardens walk may finish at another gate, so the way home could be a different bus or MRT connection.

On the reverse Bedok-bound journey, the operator lists 41029 Opp Botanic Gdns Stn on Dunearn Road. That is a different stop code and pedestrian approach. If the visit finishes near the Tanglin side, returning to the Bukit Timah shelter may involve unnecessary walking; compare other authorised public transport options from the actual exit.

Farrer Road and Empress Road Market: the market stop appears only on one direction

Service 48 continues from the Gardens along Farrer Road to 11119 Farrer Rd Stn Exit A in the citybound-to-Buona Vista direction. This provides a Circle Line transfer and access to nearby residential and food districts, but the route does not list the named Empress Road Market stop on this particular direction.

The opposite Buona Vista-to-Bedok route includes 11101 Empress Rd Mkt/FC followed by 11111 Farrer Rd Stn Exit B. A visitor can plan a market outing in that direction or a legal public walk from another suitable stop. The important point is not to copy 11101 into the east-to-west stopping sequence where it does not appear.

Upcoming closure: the National Environment Agency’s November–December 2026 calendar lists 30 November to 2 December for cleaning at Empress Road Block 7 Market and Food Centre. If the market is the main reason for the trip, check its current notice before those dates. Other shops in the neighbourhood may follow separate schedules, and a hawker stall may close on its own rest day.

A family meal can have a small educational purpose: read price displays, compare choices within a budget and consider how a neighbourhood food centre serves nearby housing. Keep the activity to public dining areas and respect vendors’ working space. A correct bus stop makes the visit possible, but does not guarantee a particular dish will be available.

Holland Village MRT and the late-November hawker cleaning day

The east-to-west Service 48 reaches 11419 Holland V Stn Exit A on Holland Avenue before turning towards Holland Drive and Buona Vista’s roadside endpoint. It is a genuine rail and public retail connection. The return direction instead uses 11401 Holland V Stn/Blk 12, with a different walking approach.

Holland Village has restaurants, shops, the MRT and a neighbourhood market/food centre. Choose the actual destination rather than assuming every business with Holland in its address is beside the same station entrance. Holland Village and Cold Storage Jelita farther along Holland Road are not identical retail sites.

NEA’s current cleaning listing schedules Holland Village Market and Food Centre for 23 November 2026. A family whose main goal is a hawker meal there should check the latest closure notice, then choose a currently operating alternative if the centre is closed for cleaning. A published bus timetable and market operation are independent facts.

If shopping at a modern mall or visiting a restaurant, confirm its unit-level opening or reservation. People with mobility limitations should check the crossing and lift path from the bus stop to the actual venue. The return stop at 11401 may be preferable to a long walk back to the east-to-west 11419 shelter, depending on the group’s destination.

Buona Vista: where the bus service operates, and where people may actually board

At the western end, the last public westbound stop is 11389 Buona Vista CC on Holland Drive. The operator’s table then names 11379 Buona Vista Ter as its operating terminus, but says passengers cannot board or alight there. A traveller should not walk into the terminal expecting a waiting hall or an ordinary passenger berth.

The reverse route starts its passenger calls at 11381 Blk 10A on Holland Drive and then reaches Holland Village before heading back through Farrer Road, Botanic Gardens, Newton and Bugis towards Bedok. First/last figures printed for Buona Vista Terminal are operational time references; verify the departure at the actual public stop when arranging a time-sensitive transfer.

Buona Vista MRT and The Star Vista are separate facilities from the Buona Vista Terminal area. Service 48 does not list a stop named Buona Vista MRT or The Star Vista on its final few stops. A person going to a specific performance or rail platform should check another suitable connection rather than equate those place names.

For a young family, a clear meeting message should name the public stop code and nearby building, not merely ‘at Buona Vista’. Choosing a real roadside shelter and the proper walking route prevents confusion near one of Singapore’s more complex transport districts.

How Bus 48 compares with Bus 7, Bus 14, Bus 32 and Bus 153

Several buses connect eastern Singapore with the Botanic Gardens or western housing estates, but their actual roads differ. Bus 7 runs from Bedok Interchange through Geylang Serai, Kampong Gelam, Orchard and the Tanglin side before Holland Village. Bus 14 uses Bayshore, Katong, the Stadium and Suntec, then heads through Science Park and Buona Vista to Clementi.

Bus 48 instead starts from Bedok North public roadside stops, follows Marine Parade, makes a no-stop connection to Bugis, and uses Newton/Stevens and the Bukit Timah Botanic Gardens entrance. Bus 153 connects Hougang through Toa Payoh and Botanic Gardens to Bukit Merah, while Bus 32 connects Bedok through Fort Canning and Tiong Bahru Park to the same restricted Buona Vista operating terminal.

Do not select a service solely by an approximate end destination or the appearance of a shared road on the map. For a stadium event, Bus 14 can be relevant where 48 is not. For a Botanic Gardens Bukit Timah visit, Bus 48’s 41021 stop can be relevant; for Tanglin Entrance, Bus 7’s Napier Road corridor may be more appropriate. For Punggol households, neither is an automatic direct starting service.

The correct decision uses the actual starting location, the chosen destination entrance, current service direction and the expected walking needs. A bus can be valuable for a particular home or appointment without being fastest for every station-to-station trip.

Plan one outing carefully and make the return part of the activity

A practical Service 48 outing can have one main goal: a hawker meal at Newton on a trading day, a Botanic Gardens visit using the Bukit Timah gate, or a small shopping/rail activity near Marine Parade or Holland Village. A plan to cover all four neighbourhoods in a day is not necessary and may be tiring, especially for children and older adults.

Before departure, record the boarding code, the actual alighting code, the selected public entrance, opening information and return stop. Check any temporary works or cleaning dates. Avoid treating operating endpoints as passenger stops and do not attempt to alight within the Tanjong Katong–Bugis no-stop stretch.

Accessibility is a complete journey, not just an accessible bus. Check the starting kerb, any lift or station route, crossing, walking surface and destination entrance. A family with a pram may prefer a slightly longer but step-free public route instead of an apparent short shortcut through private property.

Finally, use SimplyGo for distance-based fares and stop-specific live arrivals for time-sensitive outings. Terminal origin first/last times are not minute-by-minute predictions at Holland Village, Marine Parade or Newton. A short successful visit and comfortable journey home are better than an ambitious trip whose final leg has not been planned.

Three suggested outings

Botanic Gardens Bukit Timah Entrance learning visit

Take the westbound 48 to 41021 Botanic Gdns Stn, follow NParks’ public Bukit Timah Entrance directions, enjoy a short free garden section and check any internal attraction separately. Return from 41029 or a suitable MRT connection; do not assume the Tanglin Entrance is beside the same stop.

Newton Food Centre meal and transport history

Alight citybound at 40031 Newton FC, choose an operating hawker with a displayed price, and use NHB’s documented history as a short learning discussion. Return from 40039 Opp Newton FC if heading east, or by a verified MRT route. A food centre’s existence is not a guarantee of one stall’s hours.

Holland Village or Marine Parade practical errand

Choose one shop or public meal in advance, use 11419 Holland V Exit A or 92049 Marine Pde/Parkway Pde as appropriate, and check the reverse stop and accessible crossing. Holland Village Market cleaning on 23 November 2026 may affect a hawker-only outing.
