Where does SBS Transit Bus Service 7 go, and which interesting places can you visit? It runs from Bedok Bus Interchange to Clementi Bus Interchange, serving the Geylang Serai and Joo Chiat Complex area, Kampong Gelam and Sultan Mosque, Bugis, the National Library, Dhoby Ghaut, Somerset and Orchard, Napier, Holland Village, Jelita and Ulu Pandan. The most useful outings are a Geylang Serai food-and-history visit, a short public Kampong Gelam heritage walk, the National Library, a Botanic Gardens Tanglin-side outing, or a meal at Holland Village.
Two mistakes to avoid: the official 82049 Joo Chiat Complex stop is at the Geylang Serai end of the broader Joo Chiat area, not the door of every Katong conservation shophouse farther south. And 13011 Napier Stn Exit 2 provides a separately mapped route towards the Botanic Gardens Tanglin Entrance, not the Bukit Timah Entrance at Botanic Gardens MRT 41021. A bus going through a famous district does not reach every attraction in that district.
Route at a glance: 84009 Bedok Int → 83059 Mjd Kassim → 82049 Joo Chiat Cplx → 01229 Bef Sultan Mque → 01139 Bugis Stn/Parkview Sq → 01029 Opp Natl Lib → 08031 Dhoby Ghaut Exit B → 08121 Somerset Stn → 09022 Orchard Stn Exit 13 → 13011 Napier Exit 2 → 11261 Holland Village → 11291 Cold Storage Jelita → 17009 Clementi Int. Full route: approximately 23km. The published first/last from Bedok is 5.30am–11.30pm daily; the opposite direction has a 5.45am first departure on Sundays and public holidays.

- Full east-to-west distance: 23.0km according to the operator’s stop list; actual journey time varies with traffic and waiting.
- Eastern public places: Joo Chiat Complex/Geylang Serai 82049 and Blk 14 Mkt/FC 82029.
- Cultural corridor: Sultan Mosque 01229, Bugis 01139, National Library 01029, Dhoby Ghaut 08031.
- Shopping and rail: Somerset 08121, Orchard 09022, Orchard Boulevard 09131, Napier 13011, Holland Village 11261.
- Botanic Gardens: NParks explicitly lists Bus 7 for Holland/Napier Road access to the Tanglin Entrance. General Gardens entry free; National Orchid Garden ticketed.
- Variant 7A: operator shows Bedok to Orchard Stn Exit 13 only; 7B: Clementi to Dhoby Ghaut Stn only. Do not assume they run all day because their published pages lack dependable timetable windows.
- Not direct: Punggol MRT, Changi Airport, East Coast Park’s beachside facilities, the Katong southern heritage houses, Botanic Gardens MRT 41021 or Sentosa.
Where to alight and what to do
The stop codes follow SBS Transit’s Bedok-to-Clementi sequence. A stop does not guarantee entry, a short accessible walk or a shop being open. Check the public entrance and return-side bus independently.
| Place | Stop code | Reason and care |
|---|---|---|
| Bedok MRT and Interchange | 84009 Bedok Int | East–West Line, local food and transfer; identify the actual bus berth. |
| Masjid Kassim/Eunos Changi Road | 83059 Mjd Kassim | Public architecture and neighbourhood history; mosque visitor hours apply. |
| Joo Chiat Complex and Geylang Serai | 82049 Joo Chiat Cplx | Geylang Serai public shopping and food; different from Katong’s southern conservation streets. |
| Blk 14 Market/Food Centre | 82029 Blk 14 Mkt/FC | Check current traders and centre cleaning before a meal. |
| Kallang road-side train connection | 80039 Opp Lor 1 Geylang Ter | Near Kallang MRT district, but not the main service’s origin. |
| Sultan Mosque and Kampong Gelam | 01229 Bef Sultan Mque | A good start for NHB’s public Kampong Glam heritage trail. |
| Bugis MRT and Parkview Square | 01139 Bugis Stn/Parkview Sq | Different mall and station exits; art events may require tickets. |
| National Library Building | 01029 Opp Natl Lib | A public reading/learning visit at 100 Victoria Street. |
| Dhoby Ghaut and Somerset MRT | 08031 Dhoby Ghaut Exit B, 08121 Somerset Stn | Rail and retail; separate shopping entrances. |
| Orchard and Orchard Boulevard | 09022 Orchard Stn Exit 13, 09131 Opp Orchard Blvd Stn | Orchard Road and TE13 are distinct station locations. |
| Tanglin/Napier Botanic Gardens approach | 13011 Napier Stn Exit 2 | Follow NParks public route to Tanglin Entrance; not the Orchid Garden doorway. |
| Holland Village | 11261 Holland Village | Food and shopping, independently verify the outlet and crossing. |
| Jelita/Pandan Valley/Ulu Pandan | 11291 Cold Storage Jelita, 12031 Pandan Valley Condo | Neighbourhood errands, private condos not public sightseeing sites. |
| Clementi Interchange | 17009 Clementi Int | Final transport hub near Clementi MRT EW23, shops and train transfer. |
A route with contrasting neighbourhoods, not one compulsory sightseeing itinerary
Service 7 is a cross-town bus that shows how eastern Singapore, the city centre and western residential streets connect. Its outward sequence begins at Bedok, reaches Geylang Serai and Kampong Gelam, then travels through retail and civic streets before entering Holland Road and Ulu Pandan. Some parts are culturally interesting, others are practical commuting roads.
A useful family guide needs to distinguish an ordinary stop from a genuine visitor destination. Bus stops beside a school, private condominium or shop may be relevant for legitimate appointments, but they are not automatically walk-in attractions. At other stops, such as Kampong Gelam or the National Library, public access is clearer, though a particular building can still require admission or registration.
Choose one main place and an optional second activity if it is genuinely close. A Geylang Serai food visit and Kampong Gelam heritage street walk could each be enjoyable on their own. An attempt to cover every famous district between Bedok and Clementi in one afternoon would create excessive travel and leave little time to appreciate the places.
For Punggol residents, the bus does not start at Punggol Interchange or Punggol Coast. Begin with the actual starting block and compare the connection to a valid stop. A bus’s interesting route is not proof it is the best door-to-door choice from every northeast estate.
Geylang Serai and Joo Chiat Complex: a place-name trap
The official outward 7 calls at 82049 Joo Chiat Cplx and then 82029 Blk 14 Mkt/FC. These stops are useful around the Geylang Serai market-and-shopping district. They are not the same as an immediate stop at every colourful Katong conservation shophouse along East Coast Road.
The National Heritage Board’s history of Geylang Serai Market documents market activity before the Second World War and later redevelopment. A family can make a real learning visit by reading that account and seeing public market surroundings today. A historical description should be grounded in NHB evidence rather than made-up stories about individual stalls.
For a meal, choose a currently trading public outlet, check any announced cleaning date and allow for queues. A market can be open even when a particular stall closes; a famous dish is not guaranteed at every hour. A child can learn how a market supports nearby homes by observing its public layout without disturbing traders.
If the original plan is to photograph Katong’s southern shophouse streets, use the exact street address and select a separate bus or safe pedestrian connection. ‘Joo Chiat’ is a long road and an identity for a broader area, not one small attraction placed behind the bus stop.
Kampong Gelam and Sultan Mosque: a compact heritage walk
Service 7 passes 01229 Bef Sultan Mque on North Bridge Road before Bugis. NHB’s Kampong Glam Heritage Trail describes the former Malay royal neighbourhood, Sultan Mosque, Bussorah Street, Arab Street and the diverse communities that lived or traded in the district. The bus provides a usable public transport approach to that history.
One outing can involve one or two short public streets, a heritage panel and a meal at an open establishment. Children can compare today’s shopfronts with archival descriptions. Choosing one explanation to read carefully is more valuable than a rushed checklist of all twelve trail markers.
Religious sites and heritage institutions have visitor rules. Sultan Mosque is an active place of worship, so opening times, clothing standards, prayer schedules and photography conditions apply. The public street environment can still be interesting when indoor entry is unavailable.
When returning, the Clementi-to-Bedok direction does not necessarily use the same North Bridge Road stop. Check the actual walking path to a verified return stop, or compare the Bugis MRT connection. The best way home may depend on which street the group finishes its walk.
Bugis and the National Library: a low-cost reading destination
The bus serves 01139 Bugis Stn/Parkview Sq and 01029 Opp Natl Lib. The National Library Building is at 100 Victoria Street, while Bugis MRT and several retail developments occupy separate entrances. A public transport stop provides a neighbourhood reference, not a door into every nearby building.
A family can select a reading topic and visit the library to find age-appropriate information. A child could read about the historical neighbourhood just visited, then discuss how written sources add evidence to visual observations. Such an outing can provide learning value without paying for a theme park or making multiple purchases.
Library hours, lending eligibility, programmes and room bookings are not determined by Service 7’s timetable. If a particular workshop or exhibition is essential, check NLB’s current listing and registration requirements before travelling. Shops inside other buildings can follow different operating times.
Do not assume a busy street or landmark is accessible by the shortest straight-line route on a map. Use marked crossings, lifts and public entrance signs. A family with a stroller may need a different approach from an adult walking alone.
Dhoby Ghaut, Somerset and Orchard: choose the right destination
The westbound Bus 7 stops at 08031 Dhoby Ghaut Stn Exit B, 08121 Somerset Stn and 09022 Orchard Stn Exit 13. These are three distinct MRT and shopping precincts along a busy central corridor, not identical entrances to one mall.
Dhoby Ghaut connects the North South, North East and Circle Lines. Somerset and Orchard serve their own shopping streets. A traveller whose objective is a film, bookshop, appointment or meal should choose the exact venue, then select the bus stop that gives the safest pedestrian approach.
After shopping, the return may be more comfortable by MRT, especially when the bus is subject to road traffic. No route guide can responsibly promise a fixed arrival time in busy Orchard. The published terminal headways are service information, not a clock for every intermediate shelter.
This section is also useful for teaching transport literacy. Compare the three station names and identify the difference between a road-side bus pole and an underground station entrance. Reading the number on the bus and the code on the shelter reduces the chance of heading the wrong way.
Botanic Gardens by Napier: Tanglin is not Bukit Timah
NParks’ Singapore Botanic Gardens getting-here page explicitly lists Bus 7 for the Holland/Napier Road approach serving the Tanglin Entrance. Outward stop 13011 Napier Stn Exit 2 is therefore a defensible route reference when a visitor has selected that part of the Gardens.
The Gardens have several entrances. A route to Tanglin is not the same as one to the Bukit Timah Entrance at Botanic Gardens MRT, code 41021, and the National Orchid Garden is a separately ticketed attraction farther inside. Do not confuse free general garden admission with entry to every named exhibit or facility.
A family might choose a short plant-observation activity, compare shapes and textures without touching the plants, and rest in a suitable public area. The larger gardens open 5am to midnight, while individual attractions and temporary works have separate schedules. Check NParks’ notices for the selected day.
For accessibility, a bus stop and a garden entrance may have a meaningful distance between them. Use actual public routes, not diplomatic or private property as a shortcut. A manageable part of the garden can be more rewarding than attempting to cross the entire site after a long bus journey.
Holland Village, Jelita and the residential western corridor
After Napier, the bus travels on Holland Road to 11261 Holland Village and 11291 Cold Storage Jelita. These are separate shopping and dining areas. Holland Village MRT is another location connected by a public pedestrian route; the bus stop name does not prove the station platform is beside the kerb.
Choose a real public restaurant or errand and check its current hours. A mall or supermarket may be open while another tenant is shut, and a public bus fare does not include a meal. If the family wants only one food outing, there is no reason to continue to the next shopping precinct.
Ulu Pandan and Pandan Valley stops primarily serve housing and local appointments. The names of private condominium developments are useful for wayfinding, but their facilities are not general visitor attractions. Follow an authorised gate when visiting a resident.
The service finishes at Clementi Interchange beside the East–West Line. Consider whether a train journey gives an easier return. The Clementi-origin timetable differs from Bedok’s Sunday morning start, and intermediate bus stop last times require live verification.
The two lettered variants are not full Service 7
SBS Transit publishes a 7A route from Bedok Interchange to Orchard Stn Exit 13, and 7B from Clementi Interchange to Dhoby Ghaut Stn. These are shortened journeys, not interchangeable end-to-end services from Bedok to Clementi.
The operator pages for the variants show the stopping sequence but no dependable all-day first/last timetable. It would be misleading to promise they are available for a spontaneous afternoon outing solely because the route is listed. Use the current bus display and arrival information when the variant actually appears.
If your destination is Holland Village from Bedok, 7A would end too early. If you are travelling from Clementi to Kampong Gelam, 7B ends at Dhoby Ghaut and does not carry you into North Bridge Road. Check the whole route label before boarding.
Lettered Singapore bus numbers can represent shorter working segments or operating periods. Reading the suffix is a simple habit that prevents a long and avoidable transfer when the original plan requires the complete service.
Build a reliable return instead of treating the whole bus as a guided tour
A practical plan contains four elements: a valid boarding stop, the exact alighting code, the public entrance to the chosen place and the correct return route. This is especially important when a family visits a heritage district and finishes its walk far from the original stop.
Give priority to weather, mobility and timing. An older relative may need a step-free crossing; a child may need a short walk and a rest; a timed event requires a margin for traffic. A map’s shortest line is not necessarily a safe pedestrian route or a dependable appointment time.
SimplyGo’s fares depend on the travelled distance and concession eligibility, not one fixed price for every Service 7 passenger. Bus frequency ranges are estimates rather than guaranteed arrivals. For an evening outing, check the actual stop-specific last bus and a suitable MRT alternative before travelling.
The purpose of a Bus Guide is not to persuade someone to visit every famous place on a 23km line. It is to make one real destination easier to choose and reach. Honest negative information—what the bus does not serve—can be as useful as the list of places it does.
Three workable outings
Geylang Serai cultural and food visit
Ride 7 from Bedok to 82049 Joo Chiat Complex. Choose a real public market or shop and use NHB’s Geylang Serai history for context. Treat Katong’s southern heritage streets as a separate trip if the group has time and wants to walk farther.
Kampong Gelam heritage and library
Alight at 01229 Bef Sultan Mque, use NHB’s public heritage trail respectfully, then optionally walk through public streets to the National Library near 01029. Check venue hours and return via a correctly oriented bus or MRT.
Botanic Gardens Tanglin-side public nature outing
Alight at 13011 Napier Stn Exit 2, follow NParks’ public guidance to the Tanglin Entrance, choose one garden section and check paid attraction rules. Plan a return that suits the family instead of walking the whole site.
