Where does SBS Transit Bus Service 80 go, and what interesting places can you visit? Bus 80 links Sengkang Bus Interchange to HarbourFront Bus Interchange. Travelling south, it serves Hougang and Kovan, then Tai Seng, MacPherson, Aljunied, the Geylang Road corridor, Kampong Gelam, Bugis, City Hall, Boat Quay, the Maxwell and Tanjong Pagar area, and finally VivoCity/HarbourFront. That makes it an unusual cross-town route on which you can select one modest outing or several distinct cultural neighbourhoods.
The most important 2026 change is where Bus 80 boards at Sengkang. From Saturday 31 October 2026, SBS Transit says Service 80 returned from temporary Compassvale arrangements to Sengkang Bus Interchange and its original route. Readers using a saved page that still names Compassvale should follow the newer dated notice and the current interchange signs, not the obsolete temporary origin. The official service table uses Sengkang Int stop 67009.
For a Punggol resident, reach Sengkang before boarding 80; it is not a bus departing from Punggol Interchange. This guide gives actual southbound stop codes, suggestions for food, history and rail connections, and the critical distinction between full Bus 80 and short-trip 80A. Choose the destination first; do not treat every street the bus passes as an attraction.
What this service is — and what it is not
Bus 80 is a regular two-terminal SBS Transit route from Sengkang Int (67009) to HarbourFront Int (14009). It serves intermediate roads useful for culture, shopping and rail transfers. It is not a dedicated sightseeing bus, does not enter every museum or heritage building, and does not run to Sentosa Island as its terminal. For the island, a separate onward connection may be necessary.
Quick facts and the new interchange information
- Operator: SBS Transit. Confirm the operator when reading live notifications.
- Restored Sengkang origin: 67009 Sengkang Int, effective 31 October 2026 after temporary relocation; latest dated operator notice takes precedence over stale Compassvale headers.
- Other terminal: 14009 HarbourFront Int at Seah Im Road, not a Sentosa island bus stop.
- Published origin departure window: first 5.15am and last 11.30pm from Sengkang in the updated table; this does not establish the final bus time from Bugis or Boat Quay.
- Short trip: 80A is published as Sengkang Int to Aljunied Stn, not a bus to HarbourFront. Check the route letter.
- Best clusters: Hougang/Kovan for practical errands; Kampong Gelam/Bugis for culture; Maxwell for eating; HarbourFront for shopping and onward Sentosa access.
- Travel decision: Rail may be faster end-to-end; the bus offers intermediate local stops. Compare door-to-door travel rather than naming a universal winner.
Where to alight: useful stops and realistic destinations
The five-digit numbers below refer to published stops for the stated travel direction, not the exact entrance of a mall, park or venue. Walks, safe crossings, lift access, venue hours and the reverse-direction stop need separate checks.
| Place or purpose | Stop code towards destination | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sengkang MRT and Compass One | 67009 Sengkang Int | Start at the restored interchange; check the departure board. |
| Hougang MRT and local shops | 64381 Hougang Stn Exit C | Meal or MRT transfer; identify the exact Hougang Mall entrance. |
| Kovan / Heartland Mall | 63039 Kovan Stn Exit C | Neighbourhood food and shopping; verify retail opening. |
| Tai Seng, Circle Line | 70289 Aft Tai Seng Stn Exit C | Rail transfer or a specific commercial appointment, not an implied tourist attraction. |
| MacPherson MRT | 70259 MacPherson Stn Exit B | Circle/Downtown Line transfer. |
| Aljunied MRT | 81089 Aljunied Stn | A full 80 continues beyond this; 80A ends here. |
| Kampong Gelam / Sultan Mosque vicinity | 01229 Bef Sultan Mque | Choose a short mapped public heritage walk; respect worship access and private businesses. |
| Bugis / National Library | 01029 Opp Natl Lib | Library and public heritage neighbourhood; check precise library entrance and hours. |
| City Hall / Boat Quay | 04168 Aft City Hall Stn Exit B and 05029 Boat Quay | Public riverfront walks and rail access; venue booking is separate. |
| Maxwell / Chinatown fringe | 05269 Maxwell Stn Exit 2 | Choose an open food stall or mapped Chinatown walk; this is not Chinatown MRT itself. |
| Tanjong Pagar retail and food | 05429 Bef Craig Rd | Explore public streets, dining or a booked meeting. |
| VivoCity and HarbourFront | 14141 HarbourFront Stn/VivoCity, then 14009 HarbourFront Int | Shopping, MRT and Sentosa onward links; Bus 80 does not cross into Sentosa. |
Why the 31 October interchange change matters more than an old map
During Sengkang Bus Interchange refurbishment, SBS Transit temporarily moved several services to Compassvale. Its 7 October 2026 press release says five services—including 80, 86 and 87—would resume their original Sengkang interchange routes on 31 October. This is a specific, dated operator decision; do not average it with an older undated page that still says Compassvale.
For a first trip, arrive at the current Sengkang bus concourse, confirm Bus 80 on the berth signs and check the destination HarbourFront. Do not assume an old Compassvale stop is still used because a search snippet has not been refreshed. Other Sengkang services may also have moved berths during the works; check the service number displayed at the boarding gate.
If you are starting in Punggol, decide first how to reach Sengkang. The North East Line is one possibility when your origin is near Punggol MRT. If you are at another Punggol neighbourhood stop, another bus or LRT may make more sense. The Bus 80 guide begins only after that first connection.
Make your return trip equally explicit. A southbound bus to HarbourFront and a northbound bus to Sengkang can use different stop codes in the same town. The published timetable at the first terminal is not a predicted boarding time at every intermediate shelter.
Hougang and Kovan: an everyday outing before the cultural corridor
The southbound stop list first passes the Rivervale edge and Hougang Avenue 10, then calls at 64381 Hougang Stn Exit C. Hougang is useful for a grocery errand, food or an interchange with the North East Line. Hougang Mall and Cheng San Public Library are in the wider precinct, but a bus stop at the MRT is not the library door.
At 63039 Kovan Stn Exit C, Heartland Mall provides a compact alternative to an all-day excursion. You can choose one store or meal and return. An article describing the entire 80 route must not make readers feel that travelling to HarbourFront is compulsory to enjoy it.
The practical choice is whether the bus stop serves your actual address better than the MRT. Living along Punggol Road or Upper Serangoon Road may change the calculation. Consider how far the walk is, whether a crossing is necessary, and whether someone in your party needs a lift or more time.
For a family, a journey to a nearby mall can be used to practise a small life skill: compare two route options, estimate the money required and check a safe return stop. That can be more useful than repeatedly visiting multiple crowded destinations.
Tai Seng, MacPherson and Aljunied: useful transfer points, not a promise of sightseeing
Bus 80 calls at 70289 Tai Seng Stn Exit C, 70259 MacPherson Stn Exit B and 81089 Aljunied Stn in sequence on its way towards Geylang Road. These labels identify actual rail connections: Circle Line at Tai Seng, Circle/Downtown at MacPherson and East–West at Aljunied.
This corridor illustrates how a long bus route can be valuable even when an MRT journey from Sengkang to HarbourFront would be simpler for some passengers. A worker with an appointment near Tai Seng may avoid a transfer, while another passenger going all the way to the south coast may prefer rail.
80A is particularly relevant here. SBS Transit separately lists the short-trip 80A as Sengkang Int to Aljunied Stn. It is suitable only if the route’s published end point includes your destination. If your outing is to Sultan Mosque, Bugis or VivoCity, wait for a full-length 80 rather than expecting 80A to continue.
For a school exercise, identify the difference between a road name and an MRT station. Passing Upper Paya Lebar Road does not mean the bus serves Paya Lebar MRT. Record the actual station names and their codes instead of inferring stops from nearby road signs.
Kampong Gelam: the heritage stop that makes the route memorable
After Geylang Road, Bus 80 uses North Bridge Road and serves 01229 Bef Sultan Mque. This is a genuine bus-access point for the Kampong Gelam precinct. The National Heritage Board’s Kampong Glam trail maps the area’s mosques, streets, historical commerce and architectural landmarks, while Singapore Tourism Board has a cultural precinct map.
A reasonable visitor walk might focus on Sultan Mosque’s exterior, one side street such as Arab Street or Bussorah Street, and a food or craft business open to the public. These are distinct locations with their own visitor rules. The bus does not issue an entrance ticket to a place of worship or to a private gallery.
For children, ask how a neighbourhood can change while keeping historical evidence in its streetscape. Describe what the old shopfronts look like, then compare them with newer buildings near Punggol. Observe from public footpaths, avoid obstructing businesses and photograph people only with appropriate consideration.
An honest guide cannot promise that every attraction on a heritage map is open on the day you travel. Check official visiting instructions and your chosen venue’s hours. A short public-street walk can be satisfying without entering every building.
The practical return issue is that North Bridge Road and surrounding roads have many bus routes. A bus going to HarbourFront is not your Sengkang-bound return. Check the current stop pole and route direction before boarding.
Bugis and the National Library: choosing an indoor backup
After Sultan Mosque, the service calls at 01139 Bugis Stn/Parkview Sq, 01039 Bugis Cube and 01029 Opp Natl Lib. That places a useful library and several public commercial streets within a separately planned walk, not directly on one shared doorstep.
A simple outing is to visit a library exhibition or browse a reading area during its applicable hours, then spend a short period exploring public streets nearby. Check the National Library’s room-specific access rules and any event registration. The library building can have different facilities with different opening hours.
This is a helpful rainy-day alternative to a longer heritage walk. If the weather becomes unsuitable, shorten the outdoor portion and choose an available indoor activity rather than forcing the original route through exposed streets.
For families with young children, use a clear meeting point and do not attempt to cross busy roads just because an approaching bus is visible. Several stops may appear near a station on a phone map; choose the correct one by number and direction.
Boat Quay, Maxwell and Tanjong Pagar: three different outings, not one market
The southbound service also serves 05029 Boat Quay, 05269 Maxwell Stn Exit 2, and 05429 Bef Craig Rd. Boat Quay is a riverside street with public pedestrian views; Maxwell connects to food and Chinatown-fringe exploration; Tanjong Pagar mixes older shophouses and contemporary offices. They are different purposes even though Bus 80 links them.
If you want a riverside walk, decide the length and choose public pedestrian paths rather than treating a restaurant’s waterside terrace as a free public facility. If you want a meal, verify a currently operating stall and your dietary needs; hawker-centre cleaning dates and stall rest days can affect availability.
The Maxwell station stop is a useful orientation point, but it is not Chinatown MRT and not a guarantee of zero walking time to every Chinatown attraction. Choose the specific address or trail point before setting off. Walking from Maxwell to a specific destination may suit some visitors but not someone with limited mobility.
For a cultural visit, do not claim that all shophouse interiors are public museums. Observe publicly visible architecture and check entry rights for individual galleries, religious buildings and workplaces. A short, respectful walk is more appropriate than a plan that depends on unverified access.
A time-conscious traveller might stop at one of the three areas and return by MRT. Bus 80’s value is in offering choices, not in demanding that the entire route be covered for the trip to count.
HarbourFront and VivoCity: the final stop is not on Sentosa
Towards the southern end, Bus 80 lists 14141 HarbourFront Stn/VivoCity and terminates at 14009 HarbourFront Int. VivoCity is a major shopping complex near the North East and Circle Line interchange. The terminal is in the HarbourFront precinct, not across the water on Sentosa Island.
If the purpose is shopping, choose your entrance, shop and a manageable amount of time. If you plan to visit Sentosa, examine the separate current walking, monorail or other connections, including their fares and access rules. Do not write ‘Bus 80 goes to Sentosa’ as though it crosses onto the island.
It is possible to enjoy a public HarbourFront outing without an expensive attraction. A meal and a little time looking at the waterfront from publicly accessible areas may be enough. However, private cruise and ferry terminals, business premises and paid attractions have their own entry conditions.
If returning to Sengkang after a long outing, compare the North East Line directly with the return Bus 80. Which is best depends on where you actually end the visit, the bus wait and the total walk. A family with a stroller may make a different decision from someone travelling without bags.
Finally, remember that the bus’s published 11.30pm last departure from Sengkang tells you nothing exact about the final HarbourFront departure on your travel date. Consult the separate return-direction timetable and actual stop arrivals.
Three itineraries you can actually use
Kampong Gelam heritage and a short library break
Reach Sengkang Int (67009), choose a full Bus 80 towards HarbourFront, alight at 01229 Bef Sultan Mque and follow the Heritage Board’s public trail map for one compact cultural route. Add a National Library visit near the 01029 area if opening hours and energy permit. Use an appropriate MRT or verified return stop.
Maxwell food and a Chinatown-fringe walk
Board the full service, alight at 05269 Maxwell Stn Exit 2, use the specific food destination or heritage trail entrance as your next navigation point, then return by whichever route suits your actual position. Check hawker cleaning and business hours before travelling.
VivoCity without a compulsory Sentosa visit
Ride to 14141 HarbourFront Stn/VivoCity or 14009 HarbourFront Int for public shopping and a meal. Treat any Sentosa visit as a separately planned leg with its own transport, admission and weather conditions; you can stop at HarbourFront and return without crossing to the island.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using an obsolete interchange: SBS Transit restored Service 80 to Sengkang Int on 31 October 2026; old Compassvale headings should not determine your boarding point.
- Taking 80A to Bugis: 80A ends at Aljunied station. For Bugis or HarbourFront, check for the full Bus 80.
- Confusing road and station: Upper Paya Lebar Road is not proof the bus stops at Paya Lebar MRT.
- Assuming one bus stop opens every attraction: Buildings, hawker centres and historic sites need separate walking and entry checks.
- Assuming HarbourFront means Sentosa: A separate connection is required for the island.
- Copying a terminal timetable to a mid-route stop: Check live arrivals and the correct direction for the return.
- Trying to fit everything into one outing: Choose one or two areas and a realistic finish.
