Bus Guide | Where to Go, What to Do | Interesting Places Go-Ahead Singapore Bus Service 82 Goes To

Punggol bus interchange area in Singapore.

Where does Bus 82 go, and what interesting places does Go-Ahead Singapore Bus Service 82 take you to? Service 82 begins and ends at Punggol Bus Interchange, looping via Hougang, Kovan and Serangoon. It is one of the more useful northeast bus routes for people who want a mall, a library, an ordinary neighbourhood food outing or an approved sports activity rather than an elaborate sightseeing tour.

The important distinction is that Bus 82 is a loop. On the first part of the journey you see stops at Hougang MRT, Kovan MRT and Serangoon MRT; after the turn in the Serangoon area, you return through a different series of stops on the opposite side of the roads. There is no separate Serangoon terminal where Bus 82 finishes. If you are visiting NEX, for example, you alight near Serangoon and plan your return without assuming the same stop pole is appropriate.

This guide uses the operator’s published route, identifies the stop codes and distinguishes a destination you can realistically visit from a place that only appears nearby on a map. It covers Hougang Mall and Cheng San Public Library, Kovan’s Heartland Mall, NEX and Serangoon Public Library, and the named Hougang swimming and Serangoon stadium stops. It also explains what to check for someone who needs step-free access or a specific sports booking.

Quick answer: where does this bus really go?

Service 82 runs a Punggol Interchange (65009) – Hougang – Kovan – Serangoon – Punggol Interchange loop. Along the outward leg it stops at Hougang Stn Exit C (64381), Kovan Stn Exit C (63039), and S’goon Stn Exit E (66351). It then serves the Serangoon Stadium side, returns past Kovan Stn Exit B (63031), Hougang Swimming Complex (63359), the Hougang Mall-adjacent Blk 421 stop (64421), and back to Punggol Interchange.

Route facts checked on 31 October 2026

  • Operator: Go-Ahead Singapore; Service 82 is not an SBS Transit- or SMRT-operated bus.
  • Origin and final stop: 65009 Punggol Int, connected to Punggol MRT NE17.
  • Route type: one continuous 17.5 km published loop, not a direct point-to-point Serangoon terminal service.
  • Published departures at Punggol Interchange: 5.15am first and 12.30am last, every day on the published timetable; these are origin times, not exact departures from Hougang or Serangoon.
  • Named rail links: Hougang NE14, Kovan NE13 and Serangoon NE12/CC13.
  • Useful shopping and reading cluster: Hougang Mall, Heartland Mall Kovan and NEX/Serangoon Library; a final walk is required.
  • Sports caveat: The service stops near Hougang Swimming Complex and Serangoon Stadium; facility bookings, operating hours and any closures remain separate.

Stops to choose: where to alight and what to do

The bus stop codes below describe the operator’s listed stops for the direction specified. They are not entrance coordinates for an attraction. Always check the final walking route, legal crossing and accessible entrance. Stops in the opposite direction often have different numbers.

What is unusual about Bus 82: one route, several kinds of neighbourhood

The route is easy to misunderstand if you only read its name. Most people think of a bus as having two different terminals. Service 82 starts at Punggol, crosses Hougang and Kovan, reaches Serangoon and returns on a loop. The route table therefore lists an outward Hougang Stn Exit C and a returning Blk 522 in the Hougang area, different Kovan exits and a Serangoon stadium stop after Serangoon station.

That pattern is useful because it links neighbourhoods that are also served by the North East Line. But the bus does not follow the MRT exactly: it passes residential streets and community amenities between stations. A person living beside a stop on Hougang Avenue 10 may find it more convenient than first walking to Punggol MRT; another person whose destination is beside Serangoon station might reasonably prefer the train.

The correct comparison is door to door. Add time to get to the first stop, wait for a bus, ride, walk to the venue and return. A direct bus is not necessarily quicker than a rail connection, and a short-looking route on a phone map is not proof that it avoids a long crossing.

Hougang: a practical family trip that can include a library

Hougang Mall’s official visitor page places it at 90 Hougang Avenue 10 and identifies a public library in the building: Cheng San Public Library. Its bus information specifically lists Bus 82 at the Blk 421 (64421) approach. On the earlier part of the bus loop, Service 82 also passes 64381 Hougang Stn Exit C. These are two different points in the circulating route; they should not be treated as interchangeable without checking the walk.

A family with a Primary school child can make a useful outing from a meal and a library visit rather than spending money on a special event. Choose a topic before the trip—animals, water, history or transport—and find one book about it. The goal is manageable independent reading, not collecting every available book. If you intend to borrow, check the library’s membership and borrowing rules.

Cheng San Public Library is inside a shopping environment, but it follows library-specific opening hours and rules. Do not assume that the retail mall’s operating hours are exactly the same. If quiet seating or a particular book is essential, check NLB’s current information and catalogue beforehand.

On the return trip, distinguish the mall’s nearest stop from a stop that happens to share a Hougang address. The operator’s loop has a definite progression; the bus’s next stops after your boarding point determine whether you will be riding towards Serangoon or back towards Punggol. This is a better question than ‘is this Bus 82?’ alone.

Hougang Swimming Complex: a stop name is not a free admission ticket

Go-Ahead lists 63351 Opp Hougang Swim Cplx and later 63359 Hougang Swim Cplx. The official ActiveSG facility page confirms Hougang Swimming Complex as a public swimming facility at 95 Hougang Avenue 4, with normal pool access and maintenance notices.

The operator’s stop name makes it a genuine transport option for a planned swim, but the venue has conditions. ActiveSG reports Tuesday weekly maintenance closure under its usual schedule, with public-holiday exceptions and additional possible temporary closures. Never schedule a pool outing simply because the bus route exists; check the live venue status and admission requirements.

With children, plan the mundane details: swimwear, towel, shower access, water, supervision and enough time to change. The difference between a successful outing and a rushed one is often the last 15 minutes, when people are leaving tired and need to find the correct return bus shelter.

An easy alternative if the swim cannot proceed is to visit a nearby public retail or library area rather than forcing a second sports location into the same afternoon. The bus provides choices, not guaranteed activities.

Kovan: Heartland Mall and everyday neighbourhood culture

The outbound Bus 82 stop list includes 63039 Kovan Stn Exit C and the returning route includes 63031 Kovan Stn Exit B. Heartland Mall Kovan’s official website identifies Kovan Exit C and Service 82 as ways to reach its address at Block 205 Hougang Street 21.

Kovan is useful because it feels more like an everyday neighbourhood outing than a destination selected only for tourist photographs. You can eat, browse a bookshop or household shop, and observe how a mall sits next to a major MRT station and surrounding housing and market streets. Verify individual retailers before travelling; a shopping complex does not guarantee that a particular outlet remains open.

A family budgeting activity could be as simple as comparing the cost of a planned meal across two shops, then discussing the role of travel and convenience. Avoid making shopping compulsory. It is equally valid to take the bus to learn the local geography and return without purchasing anything.

If you live between stations, Bus 82 can save a long walk to the MRT, but it may also take a longer route through Hougang than rail. Check current arrival estimates and the whole door-to-door journey.

Serangoon: NEX mall, a rooftop library and a sensible stopping point

At 66351 S’goon Stn Exit E, Bus 82 reaches the Serangoon MRT area. NEX’s own site lists Bus 82 among services serving the mall, which stands at 23 Serangoon Central. The mall connects with the North East and Circle Lines and has retail, food and public amenities.

One particularly good reason to visit is Serangoon Public Library, which NEX lists at Level 4R, units #04R-82/83. A child can combine a short library session with a meal; an adult can use it for casual reading. Confirm library-specific hours and seating availability, especially at busy periods.

NEX also lists an outdoor SkyGarden. Do not promise that every play feature will be operating at a given time. Wet-weather and maintenance arrangements can affect outdoor facilities, and parents should use appropriate supervision. A trip can still succeed with just reading and an indoor meal.

One advantage of using a bus guide instead of a shopping list is the ability to select a suitable alighting and return point. Serangoon MRT is a natural alternative for the return if the loop journey would be long or a family member becomes tired. You are not required to remain on Bus 82 to complete the circuit.

Serangoon Stadium and a real notice about November 2026

After Serangoon station, the published loop includes 63149 S’goon Stadium. ActiveSG confirms Serangoon Stadium as a sports venue, but its current notice reports a temporary entire-facility closure from 23 to 27 November 2026, 7am–5pm daily. A reader making a late-November plan must check this, not merely assume the named stadium is available because a bus calls there.

An organised sports event, workout or approved match can be a good reason to travel; it is not a public invitation to enter a booked field at will. Check ActiveSG’s venue booking and availability, and choose the appropriate stop for the entrance you need.

This is an example of why destination information has to be verified separately from the transport route. The bus can run normally while the venue is unavailable. A responsible guide tells you both, then offers a sensible fallback: a library, a public shopping area or a return home.

Do not mix the stadium with Serangoon Swimming Complex, which is a different venue on Yio Chu Kang Road. A similar town name does not make two sports facilities interchangeable.

How to read the return journey and avoid a needless extra loop

Suppose you ride from Punggol to Kovan and want to return home. Because this is a circular route, the service’s published loop continues via Serangoon before coming back through Kovan and Hougang. If you board at the wrong moment, you may be committing to that remaining loop rather than going immediately to Punggol.

For each trip write down the outbound stop code, the expected order of the next stops, and the best return option. The nearest bus 82 stop is not necessarily the fastest route back. On some journeys the train or a different bus will be more sensible.

The same advice matters for travelling with an elderly relative or stroller. A lift at a station and a safe accessible path to the bus stop are separate requirements. Use current access signage; do not assume a sidewalk is step-free simply because the destination appears in a transport app.

Finally, the operator’s first and last bus table is for departures at Punggol Interchange. It does not specify a guaranteed last bus at Serangoon, and actual arrivals may vary. Check live bus information when planning a late return.

Three sample journeys: plan for a purpose

The library-first Hougang visit

Board Bus 82 at Punggol Int (65009), choose the Hougang Mall/Cheng San Library destination, check the best stop on the operator loop and the pedestrian approach to 90 Hougang Avenue 10, then enjoy a short reading-and-meal visit. Check the return direction in advance.

The Kovan errands afternoon

Ride to 63039 Kovan Stn Exit C, follow the signed path to Heartland Mall, complete one short errand or food stop and compare whether MRT or the continuing Bus 82 route is the simplest way home.

NEX and Serangoon Library visit

Ride Bus 82 to 66351 S’goon Stn Exit E, use public mall access to NEX and its Level 4R library, then return via the option that suits the family’s time and mobility. Check library hours before leaving.

Mistakes to avoid and what to do instead

  • Wrong assumption: Bus 82 is a loop, so the same service number at different stops can mean a very different remaining route.
  • Hougang Mall stop confusion: The return loop includes 64421 Blk 421, while the outbound leg serves 64381 Hougang Stn Exit C; check which is nearer to your intended entrance.
  • Sport facility closed: Hougang Swimming Complex’s usual Tuesday closure and Serangoon Stadium’s specific November 2026 notice must be checked at the venue.
  • Wrong Kovan side: Exit C (63039) occurs on the first leg; Exit B (63031) on the return leg.
  • Assuming NEX hours equal library hours: The mall and public library operate as different facilities.
  • Long extra loop after a missed stop: Compare another bus or MRT transfer instead of staying on the loop unnecessarily.
  • Accessibility uncertainty: Check the specific lift, crossing, stop approach and venue entrance; a nearby MRT symbol does not prove the whole path is barrier-free.
