Food Poisoning and Stomach Bugs in Punggol: When to See a Doctor

Side road behind Parc Centros in Punggol

For food poisoning in Punggol, start with fluids: drink more water or clear soup, and give children small, frequent sips. Most stomach bugs settle in three to four days. See a GP if vomiting stops you drinking, or there is fever or blood in the stools. Go to A&E for severe pain or severe dehydration.

A bad night of vomiting leaves anyone wrung out. The good news is that most of the work is simple: keep drinking, rest, and know the signs that mean it is time to see someone.

This page is part of eduKate Punggol’s When You Need Help in Punggol, our practical guides for life’s occasions, big and small. It covers caring for food poisoning and stomach bugs at home, when adults and children need a doctor or A&E, how to stop it spreading through the family, and how to report a food outlet.

Quick answer

  • First: drink more water or clear fluids, and give children small, frequent sips. Ask a pharmacist about oral rehydration salts.
  • See a GP for vomiting that stops you eating or drinking, fever, blood or mucus in the stools, or diarrhoea lasting more than two days.
  • Go to A&E for high fever, severe stomach pain, a lot of blood in the stools, or severe dehydration such as marked thirst, dizziness or weakness.
  • Call 995 if someone loses consciousness or is struggling to breathe.
  • Nearest A&E: Sengkang General Hospital, 24 hours. A participating GP’s original GPFirst Referral Form gives $50 off its emergency attendance fee.
  • Suspect a food outlet? Report it to the Singapore Food Agency online.

What to Do First for Food Poisoning

The Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) describes the usual symptoms as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain. Fever may or may not be present. Symptoms can start hours or days after the meal.

  1. Check for danger signs. Loss of consciousness or struggling to breathe means 995. A child who is unresponsive, struggling to breathe or has blue or grey lips also needs 995, says HealthHub.
  2. Keep drinking. HealthHub says to drink more water or clear fluids such as clear soups, so you do not lose too much water. Ice chips may help if nausea stops you drinking.
  3. Ask a pharmacist about oral rehydration salts. HealthHub suggests this. CDA says rehydration is the mainstay of treatment.
  4. Eat gently. SingHealth suggests soft, easily digested food. HealthHub says to avoid alcohol, caffeine, fatty or oily food, high-fibre food and dairy for now.
  5. Leave antibiotics to the doctor. SingHealth says they are not routinely recommended, and CDA says they are of no value for viral stomach bugs.
  6. Stop it spreading. Wash hands well, especially after the toilet and before meals. Clean soiled surfaces with bleach diluted 1 part to 9 parts water, left for at least 10 minutes, and wash soiled clothes and linen straight away.
  7. Stay out of the kitchen. CDA says sick people should not prepare food for others while ill, or for two days after symptoms clear.

Which Situation Fits You

A young child is vomiting

HealthHub says to give small, frequent sips of water. It lists water, barley water, rice water, or rehydration fluids as advised by your doctor, and says enough fluid matters more than solid food. Do not give anti-diarrhoea medicine unless a doctor prescribes it.

Take your child to a doctor if they cannot keep down small amounts of fluid for more than 6 hours, are unusually sleepy or unresponsive, have blood, pus or thick mucus in their stools, have a high fever for more than 3 days, or are not improving after 2 days. Signs of severe dehydration include a dry mouth and lips, no tears, dizziness, and no urine or wet nappies for 8 to 12 hours. For children under 2, HealthHub flags no wet nappy for more than 3 hours.

HealthHub’s emergency guide adds: go to the children’s emergency department if vomiting or diarrhoea has not eased within 24 hours, especially with blood or green bile in the vomit, refusal to eat, dehydration, listlessness, clammy skin, or a fever of 38°C or higher.

An older parent, or someone with a long-term illness

SingHealth says very young children and older adults are more prone to dehydration. People with weakened immunity, such as those with diabetes, chronic illness or on chemotherapy, and pregnant women are also at higher risk. Watch their fluids closely, and see a doctor if signs of dehydration appear.

Several people fell ill after the same meal

Report it to SFA online under “Safety of food sold or packed”. CDA says doctors notify suspected food poisoning, and that clusters should be notified to the agency. Our Punggol food safety explainer covers how SFA handles complaints.

You fell ill after travelling

SingHealth lists recent travel to a developing country as a reason to see a GP, and HealthHub flags infections caught abroad in children. Tell the doctor where you have been.

You handle food at work

Tell your employer. CDA’s guidance says food handlers who test positive are suspended until they have two negative stool tests taken at least one week apart.

Costs and the GPFirst Subsidy

  • Sengkang General Hospital A&E: S$171 attendance fee from 1 October 2025. MediSave cannot be used for the emergency bill.
  • GPFirst: if a participating GP refers you to a participating emergency department, you get a $50 subsidy on the prevailing attendance fee. Sengkang General Hospital takes part, along with CGH, SGH, TTSH, KTPH, Woodlands Hospital, NUH (adult emergency only), NTFGH and the Alexandra Hospital Urgent Care Centre.
  • GPFirst rules: you need the original GPFirst Referral Form. PRs, foreigners and CHAS patients are included. Polyclinic referrals are not covered, though polyclinic-referred patients are still given priority. KKH is not on the list.

Sengkang’s emergency department counts vomiting and fever as minor emergencies that GPs may also treat, and says non-emergency patients may wait an average of more than four hours. For a stomach bug without danger signs, a GP is the sensible first stop.

Neighbour’s Tips

  • Little and often for children. HealthHub’s advice for a child with a stomach bug is small, frequent sips of water.
  • Keep a bottle of bleach handy. Mix 1 part bleach to 9 parts water and leave it on soiled surfaces for at least 10 minutes, as CDA advises.
  • Hand over the cooking. Stay off kitchen duty until two days after your symptoms clear.
  • Write down what you ate. Note where, when and with whom. It helps the doctor, and SFA, if you report it.
  • Ask the GP about GPFirst if A&E is possible. The original referral form saves $50 at Sengkang.
  • Check the nappies and the toilet. HealthHub lists little or no urine among the signs of severe dehydration.
  • Need an MC? Our guide to sick leave and family leave explains your entitlements.

If It’s Urgent or Gets Worse

Call 995 for loss of consciousness or breathlessness, both on MOH’s list of life-threatening emergencies. For a child, HealthHub adds being unresponsive, struggling to breathe, or blue or grey lips. Go to A&E for high fever, severe stomach pain, a lot of blood in the stools, or severe dehydration: extreme thirst, confusion, feeling faint, or little or no urine.

For advice, NurseFirst is on 6262 6262 from 8am to 11pm. Since 1 June 2025, 995 calls that are not life-threatening may be transferred to NurseFirst during those hours, under an MOH trial.

HealthHub lists symptoms that do not improve or get worse, diarrhoea lasting more than 3 days despite medication, dehydration, very bad stomach pain, blood in the stools or black, sticky stools, and a fever above 39°C.

Can I give my child anti-diarrhoea medicine?

Not unless a doctor prescribes it, says HealthHub. Focus on small, frequent sips of fluid.

How do I report a food stall or restaurant?

Use SFA’s online feedback form and choose the food safety category. As of October 2026, SFA’s page lists no phone hotline for this.
