If the television keeps creeping louder at home, you are not imagining it, and you are certainly not alone.

This page is part of eduKate Punggol’s Essential Information for Punggol, our quick answers and where-to-go lists for everyday life in Punggol. It explains where to get a hearing test, how the subsidised route to a hearing aid works for seniors, what it costs, and what to do for children and students.

Which Route Fits You

A parent or grandparent aged 60 and above

MOH’s Project Silver Screen offers hearing screening at Active Ageing Centres and Community Centres. Anyone with a possible problem is referred for further tests, for example at a Community Audiology Clinic, which fits and evaluates hearing aids. SKH has run similar functional screenings in Punggol for Singapore Citizens and PRs aged 60+ who have not been screened in the past 12 months.

A working adult who is struggling in meetings

See your GP or Punggol Polyclinic first. SKH says your doctor may refer you to an audiologist for a hearing assessment. A private centre is another option for a first test, but check the opening days.

A student or child

HPB’s Student Health Centre offers audiometry tests for students, by HealthHub appointment. For a younger child, start with a GP, the polyclinic or a paediatrician. SKH’s page notes that the OAE test is commonly used for screening infants and young children.

Ringing in the ears or dizziness

SKH Audiology assesses balance and vertigo, and manages tinnitus once an ENT doctor has cleared you. Ask your GP or the polyclinic for a referral.

How to Get a Subsidised Hearing Aid, Step by Step

  1. Get screened or assessed. Join a functional screening session, or see Punggol Polyclinic or a CHAS GP.
  2. Get the referral. AIC says that if needed, a polyclinic or CHAS doctor can refer you to ENT.
  3. See the hospital team. The ENT doctor and audiologist at a restructured hospital, such as SKH, test your hearing and advise on a device.
  4. Apply for SMF through the audiologist. This is the route AIC specifies for hearing aids.
  5. Wait for approval. Processing can take up to 15 working days. Do not buy the hearing aid yet.
  6. Get fitted. The audiologist fits the device and counsels you on using it. Ask about follow-up checks.

What to Bring

  • NRIC or Digital NRIC.
  • Your CHAS, Merdeka or Pioneer Generation card, and any financial assistance documents.
  • Your referral letter, if you have one.
  • Any hearing aids you already use, and their paperwork.
  • A family member, so two people hear the advice, plus a short list of the situations where hearing is hardest.

Costs, Subsidies and Eligibility

SMF for hearing aids: for Singapore Citizens and PRs aged 60 and above who do not live in a nursing home. The household monthly income per person must be $4,800 or less, or the home’s Annual Value under $21,000 if there is no income. SMF pays up to 90% of the device cost or the cap, whichever is lower, so there is a co-payment. Assessment fees run from $10 to $180 depending on your tier. Replacements are covered, subject to waiting periods of 24, 36 or 48 months depending on the device. Details are on AIC’s SMF page.

MediSave: it cannot be used for hearing aids. Cochlear and bone-conduction implants can use subsidies, MediSave and MediShield Life, according to MOH.

Under 60 with a hearing disability: the Assistive Technology Fund, run by SG Enable, can help with hearing aids for persons with disabilities. Ask a therapist or social worker at a public hospital or social service agency to apply.

Screening and tests: the SKH functional screenings in Punggol on 3 and 17 October 2026 were fully subsidised for Singapore Citizens and PRs. From 1 September 2025, the Student Health Centre audiometry test costs $6.00 for Singapore Citizens, $12.50 for PRs and $14.00 for non-citizens. Hearing Partners advertises free hearing tests. We found no published SKH audiology fees or hearing-aid prices.

Neighbour’s Tips for Better Hearing Care

  • Approval first, shopping second. AIC is clear that hearing aids bought before SMF approval are not reimbursed. This is the most expensive mistake on this page.
  • Ask at your Active Ageing Centre. MOH says Project Silver Screen runs at Active Ageing Centres, so it is a sensible place to ask. Our Active Ageing Centres guide lists the Punggol centres.
  • Watch SKH’s events pages. The sessions at Punggol 21 CC (3 October 2026) and Punggol Seaview RN (17 October 2026) have passed, so look out for the next one.
  • Mind the midweek closure. Both private centres we list close on Wednesdays and Sundays.
  • SKH clinics are weekday only. Plan leave or ask a family member to come along.
  • Beware of scam calls. AIC says its staff will never ask you to transfer money over the phone. If in doubt, call ScamShield on 1799.
  • Be patient with new hearing aids. Ask the audiologist how to get used to them, and go back if something feels wrong.

If It Is Urgent

We found no official guidance specific to sudden hearing loss, so we will not guess. A hearing-aid shop is not a medical service: for a sudden change, speak to a doctor at your GP or the polyclinic. For anything life-threatening, such as a serious head injury, call 995. Sengkang General Hospital’s Emergency Department is open 24 hours, and our nearest hospitals guide compares SKH, KKH and CGH.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a hearing-aid shop in Punggol?

We could not verify one in October 2026. The nearest public audiology clinic is at Sengkang General Hospital, and the nearest private hearing centres we found are in Ang Mo Kio and Tampines.

Where can seniors get a free hearing screening?

SKH holds functional screening sessions in Punggol for Singapore Citizens and PRs aged 60 and above. The sessions at Punggol 21 CC on 3 October 2026 and Punggol Seaview RN on 17 October 2026 were fully subsidised. Some sessions charge a small fee: one at an Active Ageing Centre on 18 June 2026 cost $0 to $25, depending on your card or residency. Ask your Active Ageing Centre about upcoming dates.

No. MOH says MediSave cannot be used for hearing aids. Seniors can apply for SMF instead, which covers up to 90% for those who qualify.

No. AIC says to make sure your SMF application is approved before you buy. Purchases made in advance are not reimbursed.

Where can my child have a hearing test?
