Which Route Fits Your Family

An adult with asthma

Regular asthma care can sit with the polyclinic or a CHAS GP. If you need a specialist, SKH suggests getting a referral letter from your GP or polyclinic doctor. A polyclinic or CHAS GP referral also brings the subsidised rate.

A child with wheezing or eczema

Start with a paediatrician or the polyclinic. If specialist care is needed, SKH’s paediatric dermatology clinic, run by KKH specialists, saves a trip into town. KKH’s Allergy Service sees children with asthma, eczema and other allergies. Our paediatric clinics page has more on the Waterway Point centres.

Eczema that will not settle

Ask your GP or polyclinic doctor about a referral to SKH Dermatology or the National Skin Centre. NSC says waiting times for subsidised appointments are usually long, so keep seeing your GP for flare-ups meanwhile.

Sneezing and a blocked nose that keep coming back

A GP or the polyclinic can manage allergic rhinitis, and refer you on if needed. Our allergic rhinitis and runny nose guide covers self-care for haze-related sneezing and sinus symptoms.

How to Get a Subsidised Specialist Appointment

  1. See a polyclinic or CHAS GP doctor. Subsidised specialist care for Singapore Citizens and PRs starts with a referral from one of them.
  2. Ask where you are being referred. SKH, NSC or KKH. For NSC’s subsidised rate, the referring clinic must make and confirm your first appointment.
  3. Do not book NSC yourself. If you book directly, you are seen as a non-subsidised patient.
  4. Manage the appointment online. NSC appointments can be managed through NHG Health or HealthHub with Singpass, or with NSC’s online request forms.
  5. Bring the right documents. See the list below.
  6. Keep your follow-ups. NSC takes a $10 deposit for follow-ups, refunded when you attend. Change the date at least three working days ahead or you lose it.
  7. Do not drift away. If NSC has not seen you for two years, your next visit counts as a new first visit, and subsidised care needs a fresh referral.

What to Bring

  • NRIC, passport or pass. For a child under 12 at NSC, their birth certificate.
  • The referral letter.
  • Any medical benefit ID you hold.
  • All your inhalers, creams and medicines, so the doctor sees exactly what you use.
  • Photos of bad flare-ups, since rashes have a habit of calming down on the morning of the appointment.
  • Your child’s asthma action plan, if they have one.

Costs and Subsidies

National Skin Centre consultation charges, effective 22 August 2026. Subsidised rates exclude GST, which the government absorbs. Tests, medicines and procedures cost extra.

NSC consultationSingapore CitizenPR
Subsidised first visit$30.30–$70.70$75.75
Subsidised follow-up$28.80–$67.20$72.00
Non-subsidised first visit (including GST)$164.00–$205.40$164.00–$205.40
  • Source: NSC consultation charges. Since 1 April 2026, non-subsidised clinics may also charge extended-consultation and subspecialty fees.
  • Specialist subsidies elsewhere: at public specialist clinics, Singapore Citizens get 30% to 70% depending on household income, and PRs get 25%. Our X-rays and blood tests page has the full table.
  • MediSave: the chronic programme covers asthma, allergic rhinitis and psoriasis. Eczema is not on the list.
  • CHAS: chronic subsidies apply to asthma and allergic rhinitis at CHAS GPs. See our chronic care page for the amounts.
  • Private paediatric fees: we could not confirm them. Ask when you book.

Neighbour’s Tips

  • Let the clinic book NSC. It is the difference between a subsidised and a non-subsidised first visit.
  • Use the GP while you wait. NSC itself points urgent cases back to a GP or the nearest polyclinic.
  • Tests are nearby. Lung function and skin-prick tests for airborne allergens are done at SKH’s Pulmonary Diagnostics service, with a referral.
  • Take the link bridge. From Cheng Lim LRT Exit B, the link bridge takes you to SKH. From Sengkang MRT, use Exit D.
  • Everyday eczema care. SingHealth Polyclinics suggests a fragrance-free moisturiser several times a day, a soap-free cleanser, short lukewarm showers, patting dry and moisturising while the skin is damp, cotton clothes, and treating flares early. Our skin care guide has more.
  • Asthma at school. Our child asthma guide covers action plans, spacers and telling the school.

If It Is Urgent

  • Call 995 for a severe asthma attack, breathing difficulty, a severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis.
  • Which A&E: our nearest hospitals guide explains when to choose KKH for a child and SKH or CGH for an adult.
  • Urgent skin problem: NSC is appointment-only. An urgent walk-in is assessed by its nursing staff and pays a $20 walk-in fee. NSC suggests your GP or nearest polyclinic for urgent care.
  • Non-emergency ambulance: call 1777 until 31 December 2026. MOH says the line ceases from 1 January 2027; after that, book a private ambulance operator, and call NurseFirst on 6262 6262 for advice. See our Punggol ambulance contacts guide.
