Bus Guide | Where to Go, What to Do | Interesting Places SBS Transit Bus Service 156 Goes To

Where does SBS Transit Bus Service 156 go, and what interesting places can you visit? Bus 156 connects Buangkok Bus Interchange with Clementi Bus Interchange via the northeastern residential corridor, Serangoon sports precinct, Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, Bishan MRT, the Thomson Road and Stevens area, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Bukit Timah and Sixth Avenue, Holland Road, and Clementi. It is a long route that can be broken into a pleasant park outing, a cultural garden visit or an ordinary errand.

The most important correction for older directions is the starting hub. Since 1 December 2024, SBS Transit 156 has operated from Buangkok Integrated Transport Hub (63009) instead of the old Sengkang Bus Interchange. The amendment also shifted its northeastern street sequence, skipping some former Sengkang East Road and Compassvale stops. A guide that still says ‘board 156 inside Sengkang Interchange’ is no longer adequate for a November 2026 trip.

At a glance: Buangkok Int 63009 → Bishan Park 54531 → Bishan MRT 53231 → Mount Alvernia Hospital area 51069 → Stevens MRT 40239 → Botanic Gardens MRT 41021 → Tan Kah Kee MRT 41051 → Sixth Avenue MRT 41081 → Cold Storage Jelita 11291 → Clementi Stn Exit A/Mall 17171 → Clementi Int 17009. The best trip is the one that serves your actual entrance; the whole 24.8 km route does not need to become one exhausting sightseeing day.

Quick route facts, as checked 1 November 2026

  • Operator: SBS Transit.
  • Current terminals: Buangkok Interchange 63009 and Clementi Interchange 17009, not Sengkang Bus Interchange.
  • Route changed 1 December 2024: SBS Transit announced the Buangkok Integrated Transport Hub opening and revised 156 route; do not use a pre-change Sengkang-origin diagram.
  • Buangkok first/last: 5.15am and 11.35pm Mon–Sat; 5.45am and 11.35pm Sundays/public holidays, per the published schedule.
  • Clementi first/last: 5.30am and 11.30pm Mon–Sat; 6am and 11.30pm Sundays/public holidays.
  • Distinct nature access: 54531 Opp Bishan Pk outward, 54539 Bishan Pk returning; NParks lists actual bridge closures during parts of late 2026.
  • Botanic Gardens stop: 41021 Botanic Gdns Stn outbound. NParks explicitly lists Bus 156 on Bukit Timah/Dunearn Road for the Bukit Timah Entrance.
  • Not direct to every attraction: the National Orchid Garden and Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden have their own entrances and opening arrangements; the bus’s roadside stop is not one doorway to all of them.

Where to alight: actual stop codes and useful places

The direction is important. These are selected operator-published stops, not a claim that an attraction’s door is immediately beside the shelter. Check the precise entrance, safe crossing and public access independently. Different roads or the reverse direction can have different codes.

The Buangkok change is a real route change, not just a renamed bus terminal

On 1 December 2024, the new Buangkok Integrated Transport Hub opened. SBS Transit amended Services 114 and 156 as part of the change. Its official notice specifically says Service 156 would operate from Buangkok rather than Sengkang and would serve newly added stops along Sengkang East Avenue while skipping seven old stops on Sengkang East Road, Sengkang East Way and Compassvale Road.

For a passenger, this means an older route map is not simply missing the latest bus-bay assignment; it may describe the wrong streets. Someone who remembers boarding 156 at Sengkang MRT should check whether an intermediate roadside boarding point still exists for the current service rather than assuming the original interchange berth survived.

The verified first stop is 63009 Buangkok Int. That is near Buangkok MRT and the surrounding integrated transport precinct, but it is a different place from Sengkang MRT or Punggol MRT. Decide whether you need a preceding bus or rail connection before treating 156 as a direct trip from home.

The stop sequence from Buangkok begins through Sengkang East Avenue and Buangkok Green, then continues towards Yio Chu Kang Road and Serangoon. There are useful intermediate residential stops but no reason to portray every block as a sightseeing attraction. Their value is access for residents, workers and people attending legitimate appointments.

If travelling with someone unfamiliar with Singapore, write the exact interchange and MRT code in the plan. A name containing ‘Sengkang’ somewhere in its description is not enough to determine the bus boarding point.

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park: the best green outing near the first half of the route

Service 156 travels along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Bishan Road, with 54531 Opp Bishan Pk towards Clementi. In the reverse direction, 54539 Bishan Pk serves the other side. NParks describes Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park as a large urban park with a naturalised river, lawns and river-edge greenery. It is a good place to observe how an engineered watercourse was reshaped into a public landscape.

For a family with a young child, a manageable activity is a short walk by a suitable open part of the river, followed by a rest and a return bus. There is no need to traverse the entire park. On the map, different entrances lead to distinct park sections and attractions; choose a specific one rather than assuming any bus stop at the park is equally convenient.

Current closure warning: NParks lists a bridge near Dragonfly Pond closed from 24 August to 4 December 2026, and another closest to Bishan Park Condominium from 16 September to 31 December 2026. The park remains open via other paths. A bus guide should not promise an uninterrupted walk over a bridge that is under improvement.

The park’s entrance at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Marymount Road also has a long-standing closure associated with the North-South Corridor works. Check the official map for the alternative access. Road works may change crossings, so use on-site signage and do not follow an outdated shortcut across construction areas.

If the weather is unsuitable, you can instead use Bishan MRT for a shorter indoor destination or return home. The transport route runs independently of the availability of every park path. Never enter cordoned-off areas simply because the bus delivered you to the correct road.

Bishan MRT and town centre: a transport junction, not the park’s only entrance

The Clementi-bound stop 53231 Bishan Stn is a practical place to transfer to the North South or Circle Lines, meet someone or visit public retail near the town centre. The opposite direction uses 53239 Opp Bishan Stn. These are not the same bus shelter, and a first-time visitor should confirm the road side before crossing.

Bishan is also associated with the wide park further north, but a station stop and a park entrance are different locations. If the park is your main objective, compare the 54531 park-side stop with a station-based walk. The safer choice depends on which section you intend to reach, the weather and the group’s mobility.

For a casual outing, a meal or shopping errand may be sufficient. Check the specific retail tenant before travelling. A mall’s opening hours do not guarantee an individual restaurant is open, and a route to Bishan station is not necessarily the quickest way to every Bishan address.

For students learning the geography of Singapore’s bus network, the corridor illustrates how a single long service links the North East Line catchment to the North South and Circle Lines. It can be useful for cross-town errands, but a rail journey might be more efficient for another pair of origins.

Use travel information for the whole journey, including the walk from the bus stop to the entrance. The service’s official first and last bus times apply to its terminals; they are not boarding-time guarantees at Bishan.

Mount Alvernia and MacRitchie: don’t confuse a hospital stop with a nature reserve entrance

Towards Clementi, the route includes 51069 Mt Alvernia Hosp, followed by stops along Thomson Road and Whitley Road. For people with a genuine hospital appointment, this is a meaningful transport link; check the exact building, entrance and reception instructions separately.

The reverse direction from Clementi to Buangkok calls at 51071 MacRitchie Resvr. This is a distinct nature reference on the route, but it should not be interpreted as a promise that the TreeTop Walk or every forest trail begins at the bus shelter. The reserve has different trailheads, operating hours and terrain.

NParks states that the Central Catchment Nature Reserve opens 7am to 7pm and that remaining in it after 7pm is prohibited. The TreeTop Walk has its own entry times and is normally closed Mondays except public holidays. Check the current notice for your intended route, and never attempt a trail after dark on the basis that the public bus still operates.

The environment differs from a short landscaped town park. Walking a nature-reserve trail may involve slopes, distance, heat and changing conditions. If visiting with children or elderly relatives, select a short verified route and a turnaround point; do not substitute a full TreeTop Walk excursion for an ordinary bus-stop visit.

The responsible approach is to decide first whether the goal is a hospital, a short reservoir view or a longer nature hike. Those are different journeys even when their bus stops are on the same road.

Singapore Botanic Gardens: one of the most worthwhile stops on Service 156

NParks explicitly names Bus 156 among services along Bukit Timah and Dunearn Road serving the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The outward table includes 41021 Botanic Gdns Stn, near the Gardens’ Bukit Timah Entrance. This is one of the clearest public sightseeing purposes on the route.

The core Gardens offer free general entry, and the main site is open 5am to midnight according to NParks’ visitor information, but individual attractions and buildings have separate hours. The National Orchid Garden charges admission and sits elsewhere within the Gardens. Do not imply it is free simply because the larger park is free.

There is also the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden, whose entrance and operating restrictions differ from the general garden. NParks lists it as a children-focused facility with an adult-accompaniment requirement and usual Monday closure except public holidays. A family intending that experience should choose its entrance specifically, not just get off at the first sign saying Botanic Gardens.

An easy outing from Bus 156 is a short walk around the publicly accessible Bukit Timah section near the station, observing plants, landscaping and the relationship between a UNESCO-listed garden and the surrounding city. The goal can be one carefully chosen area, not the entire site.

For a student, a useful activity is to compare two plant forms, describe one adaptation or observe how signs explain conservation. Keep the observation grounded in what is visible, and do not touch or collect plants. If a thunderstorm approaches, leave exposed paths and follow NParks’ safety notices.

Specific early-November 2026 note: NParks displays a temporary closure of the Tan Hoon Siang Mist House on 5 November for tree works. Check the current notice if that attraction matters. This illustrates the difference between a place being open overall and a particular exhibit being accessible.

Bukit Timah and Sixth Avenue: learning stops and neighbourhood services

After Botanic Gardens MRT, Bus 156 continues along Bukit Timah Road past 41051 Tan Kah Kee Stn and 41081 Sixth Ave Stn. These stations are on the Downtown Line, and the route also passes schools and educational premises. A bus crossing an education corridor does not permit casual entry into school grounds.

For a visitor with a specific appointment at a school, university or education provider, check the actual address and visitor gate. It is not enough to choose a bus stop carrying the school’s name. Some campuses have several gates and controlled entrances; a shorter line on a map may not reach the proper reception point.

The streets around Sixth Avenue include neighbourhood food and retail. A modest visit can be a meal, coffee or an ordinary local errand. Check the specific outlet’s hours and the walking route from the stop, especially if returning after dark. Do not turn a stop at the MRT into a claim that every business named Sixth Avenue is a few steps away.

From the opposite direction, the bus uses 42019 Opp Sixth Ave Stn and other Dunearn Road stops, not the same outward road-side position. Record the return-direction code if a walk along Bukit Timah Road is planned.

The surrounding landscape can also make an interesting geography lesson. Compare old institutions, major arterial roads and modern MRT entrances; distinguish a place name, an actual transit station and the building where a scheduled appointment occurs. That is more useful than inventing unrestricted ‘campus tours’ along the route.

Holland Road, Jelita and Clementi: the route’s everyday western finish

From Sixth Avenue, the outward 156 goes along Sixth Avenue itself, then Holland Road to the 11291 Cold Storage Jelita stop, Ulu Pandan Road and Clementi Avenue 2. This is a residential and neighbourhood-retail corridor, not a guarantee that every named condominium or private club is accessible to visitors.

If visiting Jelita for a grocery errand, confirm the shop and pedestrian entrance. The existence of a named bus stop does not prove every retailer in the building follows the same opening time. For a meeting with a resident, request a block or building entrance rather than using a broad ‘Holland Road’ meeting point.

The service then reaches 17171 Clementi Stn Exit A/Mall and finally 17009 Clementi Int. This makes Clementi a clear endpoint for shopping, a meal or an East–West Line connection. The mall, rail platform and interchange berth occupy related but separate locations.

For the return to Buangkok, check the correct bus service direction and its first departure at Clementi rather than reusing the Buangkok schedule. The first and last times differ between terminals, and intermediate stop timings are not fixed from those table values alone.

A rider whose sole goal is a West-to-North East commute should compare the rail journey. A long bus route can be convenient when both ends are near its roadside stops, but it is not automatically faster than an MRT trip across the city.

What is the right way to choose between nature, study and errands?

It is tempting to treat Bus 156 as an itinerary that obliges you to visit Bishan Park, Botanic Gardens, Sixth Avenue and Clementi in one day. This would involve multiple long walks and a substantial amount of transport. The better approach is to identify the experience you genuinely want.

For a nature outing with children, choose one garden or park section, check accessibility and closure notices and set a simple return point. For an education or business appointment, focus on the actual institution entrance and arrival time. For shopping, verify the retailer and decide how much time the group has.

A first-time traveller should write down four things: boarding stop, alighting stop, safe pedestrian route and return option. This is more robust than memorising a guessed travel time or relying on an old map. If the initial plan fails, a clear alternative can be selected without running across traffic.

Fares vary by distance and concession status. Use SimplyGo’s current fare guidance rather than one price claimed for every journey. Similarly, leave margin for traffic and transfers. An estimate in a journey app is not a service guarantee.

Three outings you can plan without making the day too difficult

A half-day Singapore Botanic Gardens visit

Start from an appropriate Bus 156 stop towards Clementi and alight at 41021 Botanic Gdns Stn. Use the Bukit Timah Entrance, enjoy one public garden area and verify any paid attraction separately. Check the return-side 41029 stop, and plan the trip around NParks’ current operating and weather notices.

A Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park nature afternoon

Travel towards Clementi and alight at 54531 Opp Bishan Pk, use a designated crossing to your chosen park section and consult NParks’ live bridge-closure map. Keep the visit to one manageable river or lawn area. Return from the opposite-direction stop 54539 if appropriate.

A Clementi shopping and rail-transfer trip

Stay on full 156 towards Clementi Stn Exit A/Mall (17171) or Clementi Interchange (17009), complete one errand or meal and use a verified MRT or bus route home. Do not treat the two adjacent transport buildings as one identical entrance.

Pitfalls and the simplest responsible fixes

  • Obsolete Sengkang origin: since 1 December 2024, 156 begins at Buangkok Int 63009, not Sengkang Int.
  • Bishan Park bridge closures: check NParks’ current 2026 notices and take alternative bridges; do not cross barriers.
  • Nature-reserve hours: MacRitchie trails close on their own schedule, even when the bus still operates; TreeTop Walk is not beside every stop.
  • Botanic Gardens admission: the main gardens have free entry, while the National Orchid Garden is a separately ticketed attraction.
  • Wrong garden entrance: Bukit Timah Entrance near the MRT differs from Tanglin, Gallop and other access points.
  • Wrong university or school gate: a roadside stop does not grant entry to restricted campuses.
  • Sixth Avenue return side: 41081 outward and 42019 returning use different road sides and stop names.
  • Late departure: a terminal’s last bus is not the last bus at every intermediate shelter.
