Going Away from Punggol: Keeping Your Home Safe While You Travel

Punggol bus terminal area

Keeping your home safe while you travel from Punggol comes down to four things: lock every door, window and gate with sturdy grilles and closed-shackle padlocks, ask a trusted neighbour to clear your mailbox and check the flat, mosquito-proof the home, and switch appliances off at the socket.

Half an hour of preparation the evening before you leave means you can enjoy the trip instead of wondering whether you locked the gate.

This page is part of eduKate Punggol’s When You Need Help in Punggol, our practical guides for life’s occasions, big and small. It covers locks, mail, mosquitoes and power before a trip, and who to call if something happens while you are away.

Quick answer

  • Lock up properly: the Police advise locking doors, windows and other openings, using sturdy grilles and closed-shackle padlocks. Never hide a spare key under the doormat or in a plant pot.
  • Ask someone you trust: NCPC suggests asking trusted people to clear your mailbox and check the home, and cancelling deliveries while you are on holiday.
  • Stop mosquitoes breeding: cover toilet bowls and floor traps, seal the cistern overflow pipe, and turn over water containers (NEA advisory, 2019).
  • Power: switch appliances off at the power socket.
  • Mail: SingPost’s Mail Retention service holds your mail at the Post Office for up to 2 months at a time.
  • If something happens: a neighbour who sees a break-in should call 999. Fire or smoke is 995.

How to Plan Before You Go

Start a few days ahead, and leave the last three steps for the evening before you fly.

  1. Line up a helper. Ask a trusted neighbour, friend or relative to clear your mailbox and check the flat. Give them your contact details and agree how often they will pop by.
  2. Sort the mail and parcels. Cancel or pause deliveries. For a longer trip, apply for SingPost Mail Retention at any Post Office.
  3. Record your valuables. Photograph them and note serial numbers. If anything is taken, the online police report asks for exactly these details.
  4. Clear the windows. NCPC advises not leaving wallets, bags, cash, phones or laptops near windows along the common corridor.
  5. Mosquito-proof the flat. Work through NEA’s travel list from its November 2019 advisory: toilet bowls, cistern overflow pipes, floor traps and water containers.
  6. Switch off at the socket. Turn each appliance off first, then unplug it. The Consumer Product Safety Office (CPSO) warns that overloaded wall sockets can cause fires.
  7. Lock up as you leave. Doors, windows, the gate and any other opening. If you have an alarm, motion-sensor lights or CCTV, check they work.

Where to Go and Who to Call

Save these numbers on your phone and give them to whoever is keeping an eye on your flat.

Which Situation Fits You

A short weekend away

The same locking rules apply. The Police advise locking up even when you leave only briefly. Pause deliveries for those days, and ask your neighbour to keep an eye out rather than to visit.

A long trip of several weeks

NEA’s 2019 advisory suggests asking a relative or close friend to check your home regularly for stagnant water. Mail Retention runs up to 2 months at a time, with monthly extensions. If you are moving abroad for longer, our moving overseas checklist covers the bigger steps.

You have a digital lock

Make sure whoever checks your flat knows how to get in, and keep the code or key safe rather than taped somewhere obvious. Our guide to locks, locksmiths and digital locks covers what to do if a lock fails.

You live alone, or your parents are travelling

Get to know the neighbours before the trip. The Police encourage residents to know their neighbours and to alert them or the Police when something looks unusual, and a friendly neighbour is the best early warning you can have.

You are worried about documents

Check your passport and travel documents well before you go. Our passports and travel documents explainer and before-you-fly checklist cover the details.

Mail Retention and Mosquito Rules

SingPost’s Mail Retention service securely stores your mail at the Post Office while you are away. At the end, you collect it or have it delivered to your letterbox. The main rules:

  • The maximum is 2 months at any one time, and extensions renew monthly.
  • A minimum of 1 month’s fee is payable, even for a shorter period. We could not confirm the fee itself, so ask at the counter.
  • Ending early needs written notice at least seven working days in advance, with a $10.90 admin fee (including GST).
  • Bring your NRIC. Additional applicants, up to 6 per application, need signed copies of their NRIC.
  • Pay by cash, NETS or credit card.
  • Mail not posted through SingPost, Speedpost Islandwide Courier items and incoming EMS are not covered.

On mosquitoes, NEA’s travel-specific advice dates from 27 November 2019, the latest we found when checking in October 2026. NEA said then that it would not hesitate to take enforcement action against anyone who creates conditions for mosquito breeding. NEA’s current dengue page, updated 13 August 2026, links a guide on dengue prevention for outbound travellers and its “Check and protect” checklist.

Neighbour’s Tips for Keeping Your Home Safe

  • Use closed-shackle padlocks on the gate. The Police recommend them, together with sturdy grilles.
  • Cover toilet bowls and floor traps. NEA’s 2019 list also says to seal off the overflow pipes of flushing cisterns.
  • Turn containers over and wipe the rims dry. NEA’s list covers every water storage container in the flat.
  • Use sand granular insecticide where water cannot be removed. NEA mentions temephos (Abate) for spots you cannot drain.
  • Give your helper a short checklist. Mailbox cleared, no stagnant water, nothing unusual at the door or gate. It makes each visit quick.
  • Test the alarm or CCTV before you go. The Police advise testing them regularly, and a holiday is a good reminder.
  • Return the favour. Offer to clear your neighbour’s mailbox on their next trip. It is how good corridors work.

If It’s Urgent or Gets Worse

If your neighbour sees a break-in or someone inside your flat, they should call 999, or SMS 70999, and not go in. If they see fire or smoke, they should call 995. If water is leaking from your empty flat into the corridor or a neighbour’s home, Punggol Town Council can deal with common property on 6590 9500 in office hours or 1800-325 8888 after hours, and our burst pipe guide explains who fixes what.

If you come home to a break-in, our guide to a break-in at home in Punggol sets out the first steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tell the police I am going away?

NEA’s 2019 travel advisory suggested leaving your contact details with neighbours or the neighbourhood police post or centre. Punggol Neighbourhood Police Centre is at 151 Punggol Central.

Can SingPost hold my mail while I travel?

Yes. Mail Retention stores your mail at the Post Office for up to 2 months at a time, and you can extend it monthly. Apply at any Post Office with your NRIC.

What should I do about mosquitoes before a trip?

Cover toilet bowls and floor traps, seal cistern overflow pipes, turn over water storage containers and wipe the rims dry. For a long trip, ask someone to check regularly for stagnant water.

Should I turn off the gas and water before I go?

We found no official guidance on closing gas or water valves before a trip, so we have left it out of this checklist. Do switch appliances off at the power socket.

Where should I hide a spare key?

Not under the doormat or in a plant pot, which the Police specifically advise against. It is safer to leave one with the person you trust to check the flat.

What if a neighbour notices a problem while I am away?

Make sure they have your number. For a break-in, 999. For fire, 995. For a common-area leak, Punggol Town Council.
