Which Fix Fits Your Lockout
Your digital lock’s batteries have died
Many digital locks have a backup. Igloohome, for example, says to use the physical key if your model has one, and to keep at least one spare. Its other method is a 9V jumpstart: hold a 9V battery against the lock’s jumpstart contact until it beeps, keep it there, enter your PIN and press the # or confirm key. Methods differ by brand, so check your manual today, not on the doorstep.
You have lost your keys
A locksmith can get you in, but think about the lock too. If the keys might be in a stranger’s hands, ask about repairing or replacing the lock while the locksmith is there.
Someone inside needs help
A toddler alone, an elderly parent who has fallen, someone unwell behind a locked door: call 995 straight away. We found no official page describing forced entry for ordinary lockouts, so we cannot tell you what SCDF will do, only that a medical emergency is theirs to judge.
Your letterbox lock is broken
Punggol Town Council refers residents to a handyman contractor. Letterbox lock replacement is $40.00 per unit before GST. The Town Council acts only as a referral body, so the deal is between you and the contractor. Our Town Council handyman guide has the full rates.
How to Get Back In, Step by Step
- Check safety first. Anyone inside who needs help means 995. A forced door or broken window means 999, and stay outside.
- Try your backups. A spare key with family or a trusted neighbour, the digital lock’s physical key, or a 9V jumpstart.
- Photograph the lock. Front, side and any brand name. MoneySmart notes that most locksmiths cannot quote accurately without a photo.
- Call two or three locksmiths. Send the photo and ask for the total price, including any call-out or late-night charge, and how soon they can come.
- Agree the price before work starts. Punggol Town Council gives the same advice for its handyman scheme, and it applies to any tradesperson.
- Ask for a receipt. It helps if anything goes wrong later.
- Fix the cause. New batteries, a spare key cut, or a better place for the spare.
What Lockouts Cost
247 Locksmith Singapore’s own site lists emergency door opening from S$80, lock repair from S$80, and digital lock installation from S$150, with its FAQ giving S$150 to S$350. A September 2025 MoneySmart article listed lower figures for this firm, but the operator’s site is the current word.
The same MoneySmart round-up listed starting prices for other firms ranging from about $39 to $100 for opening a door, but those are third-party estimates from 2025. “From” prices are a floor, not a quote. For the Town Council handyman, contractor rates apply on weekdays from 8.30am to 5pm and Saturdays from 8.30am to 1pm; Sundays, public holidays and after hours are subject to availability and may cost more.
Looking After a Digital Lock
Igloohome’s battery advice is a good starting checklist, but your brand may differ, so check your own manual.
- Use alkaline batteries, not lithium, carbon-zinc or rechargeable, unless your model says otherwise.
- Do not mix old and new batteries.
- Replace them every 8 to 10 months, and check for leaks every 6 months.
- Swap out the test batteries that came in the box once the lock is installed.
- Keep at least one spare mechanical key, if your lock has a keyhole.
If your main door is fire-rated, a digital lock must not compromise it. Our guide to digital door locks and fire certification explains what to check before you buy.
Neighbour’s Tips for Lockouts in Punggol
- Leave a spare nearby. A trusted neighbour, a relative in Punggol, or a friend at work. Not under the shoe rack.
- Keep a 9V battery outside the flat. If your lock supports jumpstart, a battery in your bag or car is no use in the drawer inside.
- Set a battery reminder. A calendar alert every eight months costs nothing and beats a night on the corridor.
- Be wary of doorstep offers. If someone knocks offering lock work you did not ask for, read our guide to door-to-door repair claims first.
- Do not ring EMSU for your flat door. The Town Council’s 1800 325 8888 line handles common property after hours, not your front door.
- Prepare the children. If your child lets themselves in after school, agree what to do when the code or key fails. Our home-entry independence guide covers backup adults and lockout plans.
If It Is Urgent or Late at Night
- Someone inside needs urgent medical help: call 995.
- Signs of a break-in: call 999, stay outside and wait for the police.
- A plain lockout at night: several mobile locksmiths list 24/7 service. Confirm the night price on the phone before they set off.
- A problem with the corridor, lift or common area: Town Council EMSU, 1800 325 8888.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a locksmith shop in Punggol?
We could not find one with a verified shopfront in October 2026. The locksmiths we found are mobile services that travel to you.
How much does a locksmith cost to open a door?
One operator, 247 Locksmith Singapore, lists door opening from S$80 on its own site. Third-party figures from 2025 suggest starting prices of about $39 to $100. Always get a quote with a photo of the lock.
My digital lock’s battery is dead and I am outside. What do I do?
Use the physical key if your lock has one. Some models, such as igloohome’s, can be powered for a moment with a 9V battery held against the jumpstart contact while you enter your PIN. Check your brand’s instructions.
Will SCDF or the police open my door?
We found no official page saying they help with ordinary lockouts, so do not count on it. Call 995 if someone inside needs urgent help, or 999 if you suspect a break-in.
Can the Town Council help me get into my flat?
No. Its EMSU line covers common property, and its handyman referral covers jobs such as letterbox lock replacement, not flat lockouts.

Back Inside, and Better Prepared
Check for danger, try your backups, send a photo, agree the price. Once you are back in, make the next lockout less likely: fresh batteries, a spare with someone you trust, and a 9V battery in your bag. The corridor is a fine place to chat with neighbours, just not at midnight in your slippers.
