The Quality Teaching Tool (QTT) helps preschool leaders and educators reflect on and improve teaching. ECDA explicitly says it is not designed as an appraisal tool for grading educators’ performance.
ECDA describes three domains: trusting educator-child relationships, children’s well-being, and learning environments and experiences. The tool contains eight subdomains and 46 items within those domains.
For Punggol parents, QTT provides useful language for discussing teaching quality. Ask how educators welcome children, support participation and extend learning, rather than expecting a public teacher score.
CHAPTER 1 OF 3
Understand what the tool is for
Read ECDA’s answer on QTT and appraisal. Its stated purpose is professional development through reflection and continuing improvement.
Do not use this guide as an official scoring sheet or infer that every centre uses the tool in an identical way. Ask the principal how the centre approaches professional learning.
CHAPTER 2 OF 3
Recognise the three areas of attention
ECDA’s QTT features FAQ connects relationships with positive interactions; well-being with values and social-emotional development; and experiences with play, thinking, language and self-regulation.
Those areas help widen the conversation beyond worksheets. A suggested question is: “How would you help a child who is interested in an activity but hesitant to join?”
CHAPTER 3 OF 3
Discuss practice with a concrete example
Ask the educator to describe a recent learning experience and how children responded. Follow up on how support changed for different children.
These are parent conversation prompts, not additional QTT items. For everyday interactions, see positive preschool behaviour guidance.
