Punggol homeowners installing or replacing an outdoor air-conditioning unit should check the person doing the installation, not just the company’s advertisement. BCA says only trained air-conditioning unit installers may install units on a building’s exterior or projecting outwards.
Ask for the installer’s identification pass and check BCA’s official route to its trained-installer list. A routine aircon servicing booking and installation of an external condensing unit are different scopes of work; explain exactly which job you need.
For an HDB flat, also check the applicable HDB installation guidelines and whether the proposed work needs a permit. BCA’s installer requirements do not by themselves establish that a particular position, electrical arrangement or installation design is approved for your flat.

Describe the proposed installation clearly
Tell the company whether you are replacing an existing unit, adding equipment or changing its position. Include safe photographs of the current setup if requested, without leaning out of a window or entering an unsafe ledge.
Ask who will assess the supports and who will carry out the installation. A quotation should identify the actual work rather than simply listing a system size and equipment brand.
Check the supports as part of the job
BCA says external or projecting units need appropriate support, such as the specified stainless-steel bracket or purpose-designed concrete ledge or casing. Ask the installer to assess the existing arrangement before assuming it can be reused.
Do not try to tighten or replace external supports yourself. If deterioration is suspected, arrange assessment by a trained installer and explain the concern before routine servicing begins.
Confirm approvals and completion records
HDB directs owners to use a BCA-trained installer for air-conditioner installation and an EMA-licensed electrical worker for electrical work. Ask the contractor which requirements apply to the proposed scope.
BCA also sets reporting duties for completed installation work. Ask for the relevant completion information and keep it with the invoice, warranty and approved work records.
Include supports in future maintenance
BCA advises checking supports for corrosion or damage at least every six months and having a trained installer inspect them during servicing. Arrange safe inspection rather than treating this as a request to climb outside.
For an indoor water-leak problem, our Punggol aircon leakage guide addresses a different starting point. This page does not certify an installer or diagnose a unit’s condition.
