SIT Punggol’s Integrated Building Management System, or IBMS, brings campus building data together to support smarter operations. SIT’s sustainability information describes more than 20,000 Internet of Things sensors measuring environmental conditions, resource use and occupancy patterns.
The sensors and management system serve different roles: sensors supply observations, while the wider system helps those observations inform operations. A large sensor count does not, by itself, prove a particular energy saving or guarantee that every decision is automated.
SIT also connects live campus systems with applied learning through its Living Lab Network. This does not establish unrestricted public dashboard access, downloadable occupancy data or permission to inspect control equipment; authorised projects have their own arrangements.

What the measurements are for
SIT says the data supports informed goals, operational improvements and resource efficiency. It is useful to distinguish a measurement from the decision someone makes using it.
As a simple illustration, observing a change in a room’s conditions can prompt an investigation. To know whether an adjustment helped, the conditions afterwards need to be checked as well. This illustrates the reasoning loop, not a claim about a specific campus control rule.
How a campus becomes a living lab
SIT’s July 2025 Living Lab Network announcement describes enabling applied learning and research using campus systems and the data they generate.
That makes infrastructure something learners can investigate, rather than only a backdrop to classes. A project still needs a clear question and an appropriate method; access to many measurements does not automatically produce a useful answer.
Do not confuse related systems
Building management, power supply and district cooling are connected topics, but they should not be collapsed into one feature. A building-management description is not a complete explanation of how electricity is generated or cooling is delivered.
For one of those related systems, see our SIT microgrid and digital twin guide. Keep each system’s purpose and evidence separate when reading campus sustainability claims.
Ask about an authorised learning route
Students should follow the project or module’s instructions about data access, permitted use and reporting. Industry partners should clarify which university team handles a proposed investigation.
If visiting campus, follow public access rules and do not handle sensors or control equipment. Our SIT Punggol guide provides the broader visitor context.
