Spark!Lab at Punggol Library is a Level 2 tinkering space created with the Smithsonian Institution for children aged seven to twelve. It offers hands-on challenges where children can explore ideas, build and try possible solutions.
For a Spark!Lab family visit, check the current activity or workshop listing before setting off. A self-directed exploration and a facilitated workshop can have different dates, instructions and registration arrangements, so follow the listing for the experience you want.
Punggol Library is inside One Punggol at 1 Punggol Drive, #01-12, Singapore 828629. Main hours are 10am–9pm daily, with staff-assisted services from 10am. The library’s overall hours do not establish a separate Spark!Lab activity schedule.

What children can do at Spark!Lab
NLB’s official library opening information describes invention challenges that children can explore at their own pace, guided by questions.
Start with the challenge displayed during your visit. Let your child explain what they think the task requires before choosing materials. A first attempt gives you something concrete to discuss.
Treat a result that does not work as information. Ask what changed, which part behaved differently and what the child wants to try next. These are suggested family prompts, rather than an official sequence that every visitor must follow.
Finding exploration sessions and workshops
The official screen-lite programme information describes Spark!Lab Exploration and an Inventors’ Workshop, and links to further details.
Open the current listing and read the programme title, dates, age guidance and participation instructions. Do not use an old event result as proof that the same challenge is available on your chosen day.
The Punggol Library page provides the official starting point for library information and current events. Ask the library if a particular activity’s access arrangements are unclear.
How parents can help without taking over
Give the child time to make a decision. Instead of rebuilding the model immediately, ask what they would like it to do and which part they want to change.
Help with reading an instruction when needed, then return the choice to the child. A simple sketch or explanation can be enough to start; the first version does not need to look polished.
Follow the displayed material-use rules and leave shared pieces available for other visitors. Finish by returning items as directed so the next family can begin.
Planning the outing around your child
Choose one main challenge for the first visit. If your child stays interested, allow time for another attempt rather than rushing through every station.
Talk about one observation on the way home: what held together, what moved or what needed changing. You could draw the idea afterwards, but there is no need to turn the outing into a formal worksheet.
For children below the Spark!Lab age range, see our Toy Library and TinkerTots guide. A mixed-age family may find separate activities more manageable.
Hours, room access and nearby reading
The library closes on public holidays and at 5pm on the eves of Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year. Check the activity’s own schedule as well as the building hours before making a special trip.
Follow the Level 2 signs and ask staff for Spark!Lab if you are visiting for the first time. For a registered workshop, keep the event details ready and follow its arrival instructions.
Our MakeIT guide explains a separate library maker service. Choose the programme that matches the participant’s age and intended activity.
