Families accompanying a parent on an overseas posting may ask about the school Leave of Absence (LOA) scheme to retain a place for the child’s return. Punggol parents should contact their child’s school before departure, confirm eligibility and submit the required application. Approval is not automatic.
Punggol Green Primary’s published guidance describes LOA for eligible Singapore Citizen and Permanent Resident pupils, including children accompanying parents overseas and intending to rejoin the school. It also describes annual expiry and renewal, so families should confirm the dates and fees with their own school.
LOA is different from requesting a short holiday absence or applying for a school transfer. This guide explains how to prepare the overseas-posting enquiry, keep learning records and organise renewal and return arrangements.

CHAPTER 1 OF 5
Check that LOA is the correct process
Read your school’s official LOA information and ask whether the child’s circumstances qualify. Explain the intended departure, overseas schooling and likely return period rather than only ask for time away.
Punggol Green Primary’s LOA page describes the scheme and its application requirements. Its guidance also includes a child already registered for P1 who will be overseas at the start of the year.
If you are considering an ordinary term-time trip, ask the school about its attendance and absence procedure instead. Do not assume a holiday request is an application to reserve a place under LOA.
CHAPTER 2 OF 5
Prepare the application
Ask for the current form and supporting documents. Have the child’s and parents’ identification details, intended LOA period and reason ready. Follow the school’s secure submission route.
Clarify who is applying and how the school can contact the family overseas. If departure or return dates are uncertain, explain that and ask how updates should be provided.
Punggol Green’s published process makes approval subject to the principal’s decision and allows the school to request clarification. Keep the acknowledgement and wait for the outcome before treating the school place as reserved.
CHAPTER 3 OF 5
Confirm fees and renewal
Ask for the fee amount, payment instructions and approved period in writing. The published local guidance describes an annual nominal fee and pro-rating for a period shorter than a year.
Record the expiry and renewal dates. Punggol Green’s page says approved LOA expires at year-end and asks parents to notify the school in November if renewal is needed. Confirm your school’s current requirements and set a reminder well before the deadline.
If overseas plans extend, contact the school before the approved period ends. Do not assume that staying overseas automatically extends LOA or that paying a previous fee renews it.
CHAPTER 4 OF 5
Maintain useful learning records overseas
Keep reports, subject information and representative work from the overseas school. Those records can help the receiving teacher understand what the child has studied when the family returns.
Ask which Singapore learning materials are appropriate to maintain alongside overseas schooling. Avoid recreating two complete school programmes at home without considering the child’s workload.
The official SLS guidance for young overseas Singaporeans says pupils on LOA should request continued SLS access through their school. Confirm access and expectations rather than assume every assigned task remains available.
CHAPTER 5 OF 5
Plan the return with the school
Tell the school when the return date becomes clearer and ask about the rejoining process, reporting arrangements and any documents required. Check the child’s level and learning transition with the school.
Confirm books, uniform, transport and student-care arrangements separately. A retained school place does not establish that every provider booking has continued during the absence.
If contact information has changed, use our school details update guide. A clear return plan connects the reserved place with the routines and support the child needs to settle back into lessons.
Information checked on 10 October 2026. Follow current official and school instructions for your child’s individual arrangements.
