Tuition should not become permanent simply because it started. A useful programme should periodically earn the right to continue.
This legacy “Punggol Tuition” page now owns one job: the 6–8 week governance checkpoint. By that point, a family should be able to ask whether the intervention is working, whether the target has changed, whether support should be reduced, or whether the arrangement should stop.
This is not a promise that every academic problem will be solved in eight weeks. It is a disciplined review point. A programme may need longer, but it should still be able to explain what changed, what did not, and why the next phase is justified.
Why 6–8 Weeks Is a Useful Governance Window
A few lessons are often too little to distinguish novelty from learning. Several months without review is too long if the intervention is poorly matched. Six to eight weeks usually creates enough repeated evidence to inspect patterns across teaching, practice, delayed retrieval and school return.
- Has the real weak link become clearer?
- Have repeated errors reduced?
- Do repairs survive a delay?
- Does the skill transfer into changed questions?
- Is school work beginning to reflect the improvement?
- Is the student becoming less dependent on live tutor support?
Checkpoint 1: Was the Original Problem Defined Precisely?
“Improve marks” is not a sufficiently precise starting target. A useful programme should convert broad concern into a teachable problem.
- English: inferential comprehension is weak because evidence is not being selected or connected.
- Mathematics: ratio and percentage problems fail because the base quantity is misidentified.
- Science: concepts are remembered but open-ended causal explanations are incomplete.
- Secondary Mathematics: topical work is stable but mixed-paper method selection remains weak.
If the original problem was vague, the first 6–8 weeks should at least have made it more precise.
Checkpoint 2: What Changed in the Work Itself?
Look beneath the total score. Leading indicators often change before a large examination result does.
- fewer recurring errors;
- cleaner working;
- faster independent starts;
- better evidence selection;
- more complete Science mechanisms;
- stronger delayed retrieval;
- less prompt dependence;
- better timed completion.
The question is whether the student’s underlying process is changing, not whether one worksheet looks better after correction.
Checkpoint 3: Did the Correction Transfer?
A correction is not stable merely because the student can redo the same question. The learner should face changed wording, a different context and a delayed return.
- English grammar correction → later independent writing.
- Mathematics method repair → differently worded problem.
- Science concept repair → new diagram or experiment.
- Vocabulary repair → later oral and written retrieval.
If the improvement remains trapped inside the original exercise after six weeks, the programme needs redesign.
Checkpoint 4: Is Tutor Support Fading?
A student can improve inside tuition while becoming more dependent on the tutor. That is why the review should inspect the amount of support required.
- Does the learner begin without a first-step prompt?
- Can work continue while the tutor attends to another student?
- Can some errors be detected independently?
- Can the learner explain the method in their own words?
- Does homework increasingly resemble in-class performance?
The purpose of close teaching is stronger independent performance.
Checkpoint 5: Is the Weekly Cost Still Worth It?
Tuition consumes more than lesson time. Count the full weekly cost:
- travel;
- homework;
- sleep and recovery;
- school commitments;
- reading time;
- CCA;
- family time;
- independent study.
A class can be academically useful and still become net-negative if it destroys the rest of the learning week.
Decision A: Continue
Continue when the target remains important and evidence shows that the current intervention is reducing it.
- the weak link is clearer;
- error frequency is falling;
- transfer is appearing;
- the workload remains sustainable;
- the tutor can name the next stage and its exit condition.
Decision B: Change
Change when the problem remains important but the current method is not working.
- replace generic worksheets with targeted repair;
- stop teaching ahead and rebuild prerequisites;
- move into timed work only after knowledge is stable;
- change class placement if pace is mismatched;
- seek specialised support when the need lies outside mainstream tuition.
Changing method is not failure. Continuing ineffective support without evidence is worse.
Decision C: Reduce
Reduce when the student is improving and the marginal value of weekly live support is falling.
- move from weekly tuition to periodic calibration;
- shift routine practice to independent work;
- keep tutor time for difficult reasoning, writing feedback or exam review;
- reduce one subject while maintaining another higher-priority subject.
A successful tuition programme should be allowed to become smaller.
Decision D: Stop
Stopping can be the correct educational decision when the target has been repaired, the student is progressing independently, school support is sufficient, or the schedule cost exceeds the remaining learning value.
Ending tuition is not abandoning learning. It can be evidence that the learner no longer needs that intervention.
English Checkpoint

- grammar errors recur less often;
- writing corrections transfer;
- oral responses become more developed;
- revision becomes more independent.
Mathematics Checkpoint
- the student identifies problem structure faster;
- working becomes cleaner;
- prerequisite errors reduce;
- mixed questions cause less freezing;
- checking catches more preventable errors;
- tutor prompts decrease.
Science Checkpoint
- concepts can be retrieved after a delay;
- scientific vocabulary becomes more precise;
- open-ended answers include the missing mechanism;
- data and experiment questions are interpreted more accurately;
- unfamiliar contexts trigger the right concept more often.
The 3-Pax Evidence Question
In a three-student class, the review should still be individual. The tutor should be able to answer:
- What was this learner’s original weak link?
- Which errors reduced?
- What still needs live feedback?
- Where has support been removed?
- What is the next exit condition?
Do Not Demand a Guaranteed Score Jump by Week Eight
Grades depend on starting point, school assessment difficulty, topic coverage, independent work, health and many other factors. No responsible tutor can promise that every student’s score will rise within a fixed number of weeks.
The checkpoint asks for evidence of a better learning system, not a fabricated guarantee.
