What happened in 2015
In late 2015, eduKate staff travelled from Singapore to Almaty, Kazakhstan, for teaching sessions and exchanges with the education partner iDDrive, while also travelling through the United Kingdom for curriculum research and professional observation.
The original article named London, Cambridge, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford and Manchester as parts of the UK research journey. In Kazakhstan, it documented sessions with students and partner staff interested in Singapore education and international-school preparation.
The original page’s opening could be read as though eduKate had permanent centres in London and Almaty. That implication is now retired. This was a 2015 teaching/research visit and exchange programme.

This URL now answers a durable historical question:
What did eduKate learn by taking its teaching outside Singapore and observing education in different international contexts?
The value is not tourism and not prestige by location. The value is comparative observation.
Why teaching outside your home system is useful
A teacher working only inside one familiar system can easily mistake local conventions for universal truths.
Cross-system work forces new questions:
- Which parts of our teaching depend on the Singapore curriculum?
- Which teaching principles survive when the curriculum changes?
- How much background knowledge do our explanations assume?
- What happens when students learn Mathematics or Science through a second language?
- How do different schools organise pace, assessment and student independence?
- Which practices are genuinely transferable and which need translation?
Kazakhstan: teaching across curriculum and language boundaries
The Almaty sessions brought eduKate into contact with students working in international-school environments and with learners whose dominant home or prior school languages were not necessarily English.
That creates a dual teaching problem:
- teach the subject accurately;
- make the language of instruction accessible enough for the student to receive it.
A student can understand a mathematical idea but fail to demonstrate it because the question language is unfamiliar. The reverse can also happen: fluent conversational English can hide weak subject understanding.
The iDDrive partnership
The original 2015 archive identifies iDDrive as eduKate’s local education partner in Almaty. The photographs show airport meetings, student sessions and exchanges with partner staff.
This relationship is preserved as historical provenance. Old partner addresses, websites and contact routes from 2015 should not be treated as current unless independently verified today.

What a useful teaching exchange should actually collect
A serious exchange should return with more than photographs.
- Curriculum differences: what is taught, when, and at what depth?
- Assessment differences: what counts as evidence of learning?
- Language demands: what vocabulary and text structures create unnecessary barriers?
- Student habits: how independently do students study, question and revise?
- Teacher moves: how are explanations sequenced and errors corrected?
- Technology: what tools improve access or feedback rather than merely add novelty?
- Culture: which classroom behaviours are local expectations rather than universal pedagogy?
The UK leg: research rather than importing prestige
The 2015 article described research visits through London, Cambridge, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford and Manchester while eduKate considered curriculum upgrades for 2016 and showed growing interest in online education.
The strongest reason to visit established education centres is not to borrow their prestige. It is to observe practices, resources, institutional cultures and ideas that can be tested against the needs of your own students.
A place name is not evidence. What matters is what was learned, what changed afterward, and whether the change improved teaching.
Curriculum R&D should be a translation process
An education idea should not be imported just because it worked somewhere famous.
- Observe: what exactly is the practice?
- Locate the mechanism: why might it work?
- Check context: what assumptions does it depend on?
- Translate: what must change for Singapore learners?
- Test small: does it improve learning here?
- Retain or reject: keep only what survives evidence.
This protects teachers from copying surface features while missing the actual mechanism.
Online education was already becoming a question in 2015
The original archive specifically mentions interest in internet education and partner demand for online training.
That was a meaningful early question: which parts of teaching require physical co-presence, and which can be delivered effectively through digital systems?
The answer is still not “put worksheets online”. Useful online education requires:
- clear instructional sequencing;
- ways to see student work;
- feedback loops;
- opportunities for questions;
- appropriate pacing;
- materials designed for the medium;
- evidence that learning survived beyond the session.
International comparison can expose hidden assumptions
Suppose a Singapore teacher says, “Students should already know this by Secondary 1.” That statement may be true locally because of Primary curriculum sequencing. It may be false for an international student whose previous school taught the topic later.
Cross-system teaching teaches humility: before labelling a student weak, check whether the supposed prerequisite was ever taught.
Different education systems create different learner profiles
A learner may arrive with:
- excellent computation but weak word-problem interpretation;
- strong conceptual understanding but unfamiliar notation;
- advanced content knowledge but limited English;
- strong oral discussion but little experience with timed written examinations;
- a broader curriculum but less depth in a particular topic.
Good teaching starts from the actual profile rather than assuming one national pathway is the universal baseline.
What should an exchange change back home?
If nothing changes after a research trip, the trip may have been interesting but not educationally productive.
Useful outputs might include:
- better diagnostic questions;
- clearer explanations for multilingual learners;
- new reading or problem sets;
- improved use of technology;
- changes to pacing;
- stronger cross-curricular connections;
- new ways to measure independent transfer.
A safeguard against educational tourism
International travel can create a false halo: “We visited Cambridge/Oxford/London, therefore our teaching is better.”
That reasoning is invalid.
The correct chain is:
exposure → documented observation → justified change → classroom test → evidence of improvement.
Prestige is not a substitute for receipts.
