World and Us Zone at Punggol Library | Compare Two Picture Books From Around the World

Main building of One Punggol community hub in Singapore.

The World and Us Zone is on Level 2 of Punggol Regional Library at One Punggol. The collection brings together stories and reading material from around the world. For a short family visit, choose two picture books that share a theme and let your child compare how each story shows it.

Start with a familiar idea such as going to school, a family meal or helping a friend. The two stories may use different settings or details. Ask what the books show before asking the child to explain the differences.

  • Go to Level 2 of the library at One Punggol.
  • Choose two books with a shared idea.
  • Compare one detail from each book.
  • Check the catalogue or ask staff if you want a specific title.

Pick a comparison your child can see

Show the child two covers and ask what they expect to find inside. Read a page or look at a picture from each book. For example, if both stories show a family meal, the child could point out where the people sit, what is on the table and what the characters do together. Keep the discussion tied to the two stories. One fictional scene gives a view of those characters and their setting.

If a younger child wants to point rather than talk, let them find one object that appears in both books. An older sibling can compare how the two illustrators draw the place. Both children can take part without reading every page.

SECTION 3 OF 4

Finish with one sentence

Back to contents

Ask your child to complete a sentence such as “Both stories show a family meal, and in this story the characters…”. Let them point to the page that supports the answer. If the family has more time, choose an eligible book to borrow through the regular library process. If the visit is short, save a title to look up later.
