Words That Move at Punggol Library | How to Explore a Poem With Your Child

Main building of One Punggol community hub in Singapore.

Words That Move is an interactive poetry installation in the Level 1 Stories Come Alive Room at Punggol Regional Library. As part of the Punggol Stories trail, it features four poems about experiences connected with moving from kampongs to HDB estates. NLB lists the installation from 5 pm to 7 pm. Check the current exhibition information before making a special trip.

Choose one poem and let your child react to the images or words before you talk about the history. A short visit can end with one question about how a place changes when people move.

  • Go to Level 1 at One Punggol.
  • Check the installation’s own hours before visiting.
  • Choose one poem and notice how the words and images work together.
  • Ask your child which detail they would draw or describe.

The NLB Punggol Stories exhibition guide lists Words That Move in the Stories Come Alive Room. Its published hours are shorter than the full library day. If you are coming for a separate programme in that room, use the programme’s own timing and access information.

Read or watch in two passes

On the first pass, let the child choose an image or a sound that stands out. On the second, see which words are connected with it. Ask what the child thinks is happening and what detail led to that idea. For a reader who is still building confidence, describe the scene aloud together.

Connect the poem with a place

Ask your child what someone might miss after moving, or what they might notice in their new neighbourhood. A courtyard, a staircase or the view from a window can turn a broad question about change into something the child can picture. Invite them to draw one remembered or imagined detail.
