Punggol Library Toy Library | Turn a Play Session Into a Book Choice

Main building of One Punggol community hub in Singapore.

At Punggol Regional Library, a preschooler can play with educational toys in the Toy Library and then choose a picture book about something they noticed. The library is inside One Punggol at 1 Punggol Drive, next to Sam Kee LRT. Check the branch’s current arrangements and the signs at the play area before you go.

The Toy Library is for play at the library. If your child wants something to take home, choose a book from the lending collection and use the library’s borrowing process. Tell them that plan before you start, so putting away the toy becomes the cue to look for the book.

  • Start with one play activity and one book.
  • Let the child name something they noticed while playing.
  • Use that word or idea to choose a picture book.
  • Give the child time to put the toy back before moving on.

A child might pick an animal figure, a puzzle or an item that fits a pretend game. Watch what they do with it and ask one simple question. “Where would this animal sleep?” is easier to answer while playing than a long quiz about the animal. If the child wants to show rather than explain, let them point or act out the answer.

Use the idea they offer as the bridge to a book. An animal can lead to a picture book about habitats. A toy used in a pretend shop can lead to a story about buying, selling or sharing. The connection can be loose. A child who notices a red wheel might be pleased simply to find a red vehicle on the cover.

Make the move from play to reading predictable

Before the last turn, tell your child what comes next. Try “One last turn, then we put the pieces back and find a book with a bus.” Give the child a job they can do, such as checking the pieces or carrying the picture book to a seat. Use the signs and staff guidance for returning toys to the correct place.

If a toy is in use, choose another item or start with the book first. A sibling can look for a related picture while waiting. The group can regroup around a single short story without needing everyone to choose the same play activity.

Choose a book you can finish or borrow

At the shelves, show the child two promising choices. Let them pick by the cover, the pictures or a line you read aloud. If they lose interest, try a page spread and ask what looks familiar. If they want to take a book home, check its availability and use the normal library borrowing process.

The Ministry of Digital Development and Information distinguishes the Toy Library’s play service from NLB’s lending services for books. Keep that distinction clear when you plan the visit.

Quick answers

Back to contents

Do children take the toys home?

Plan to use the educational toys at the library and return them as directed. Choose an eligible book separately if the child wants something to borrow.

What if we only have time for a few minutes?

Let the child pick one book from a familiar subject or share one page together. Save the play stop for another day.

Where do we meet another caregiver?

Name One Punggol, the library entrance and a landmark you have checked on arrival.
