3D Printing at Punggol Library | How to Prepare for Your First MakeIT Booking

Main building of One Punggol community hub in Singapore.

To use a 3D printer at Punggol Regional Library for your own project, complete the relevant MakeIT Starter Session if you are new to the equipment, then reserve a Punggol machine slot. NLB separates equipment bookings from learning sessions. Its current equipment booking process uses Singpass verification.

Choose a small first project. A simple model gives you room to check the file, dimensions and estimated printing time before starting. Bring the original design file and a copy in a format the lab confirms it can use.

  • Complete the relevant training before booking the equipment.
  • Choose Punggol Library and 3D Printers on NLB’s booking page.
  • Check the file format, model dimensions and estimated print time.
  • Leave time to set up, collect the print and clear the workstation.

Complete the starter step and book the right machine

NLB’s MakeIT equipment booking page links to both the Starter Sessions and the Punggol 3D printer booking. Check that the course covers the equipment you want. Save the machine booking confirmation once you have selected the right library and time.

If you are booking for a child or planning to accompany another person, check the current age and supervision requirements before reserving. Ask whether the person who will operate the machine needs to complete the Starter Session themselves.

Prepare one small model with a clear purpose

Decide what the object needs to do and write down the target dimensions. For example, if you are making a small name tag, measure the space it needs to fit before working on lettering. Check the units used by the design software. A model can look right on screen while being much larger or smaller than intended.

Save a copy you can edit and a clean export. Ask which file formats the current printer software accepts before travelling. If you have an STL file, bring the editable original too in case you need to fix a dimension. Avoid relying on a file already sliced for a different printer.

Check print time before starting

Open the file in the lab’s approved software and confirm its size and orientation. Check the time estimate against the equipment booking and leave time to clean up. If the print will take too long, simplify the design or ask staff about a later booking. Follow the on-site instructions for materials and machine settings.

For a first attempt, print the smallest version that can test the idea. If a slot or tab needs to fit another object, test that small part before printing the complete model.

Frequently asked questions

Is a printer reservation the same as an introductory workshop?

NLB lists them separately. Use the Starter Session for training and the equipment page for a machine slot.

Can I bring my own material?

Check the lab’s current equipment instructions or ask staff. Bring material only if the lab confirms it is suitable and allowed.

What else can I learn at the library?

The Punggol MakeIT guide covers workshops and other machines.
