Bus Guide | Where to Go, What to Do | Interesting Places Go-Ahead Singapore Bus Service 72 Goes To

Bus at an alighting area in Punggol bus interchange.

Where does Go-Ahead Singapore Bus Service 72 go, and what interesting places can you visit? Service 72 runs between Yio Chu Kang Bus Interchange and Tampines Bus Interchange, linking Nanyang Polytechnic, ITE College Central, Ang Mo Kio Linear Park, Hougang 1, Hougang town-centre roads and Tampines residential neighbourhoods. It is a practical choice for a confirmed education open house, a short neighbourhood shopping trip, a scheduled community activity or a green break before continuing towards Tampines.

Update for 2026: Service 72 transferred from SBS Transit to Go-Ahead Singapore on 19 July 2026. The operator confirmed that the transfer itself did not change routes or fares. Some older bus databases still label 72, 72A and 72B as SBS Transit services. For today’s operator and full-route stopping sequence, use Go-Ahead’s current Service 72 page rather than copying the older company name. Also note that Bus 72 passes Hougang Central on roadside stops; it does not begin or end at Hougang Bus Interchange.

  • Current operator: Go-Ahead Singapore, effective 19 July 2026.

Actual stops: where to alight and what to do

The table selects the operator’s actual stopping points and travel directions, rather than promising that every place is immediately at the bus shelter. Check legal crossings, available lifts and opening conditions.

Why Service 72’s operator changed but its geography did not

On 29 June 2026, Go-Ahead Singapore announced a two-phase transition of the Tampines Bus Package. In the second phase, effective 19 July 2026, Service 72 and several other routes passed from SBS Transit to Go-Ahead. The announcement said there would be no route or fare changes caused by the operator transfer. The bus still links Yio Chu Kang and Tampines; the company running it changed.

This may sound like a detail relevant only to transport enthusiasts, but it matters to readers checking a current operator timetable, lost-property procedure or service notice. An old search result may still say ‘SBS Transit 72’. The streets can remain correct while the operator name is wrong, and a page with an outdated label may not be the best source for a recent operational amendment.

The current Go-Ahead Service 72 page gives both directions and the full stopping sequence. Read the direction heading before selecting a stop because some roads have several related station names but different roadside numbers on the outward and return trips.

For a family starting from Punggol, this is also a reminder that the route does not begin in Punggol town. First choose how to reach an actual Bus 72 stop near Hougang, Yio Chu Kang or Tampines, or compare another service closer to the intended destination. A route that passes through the wider northeast is not automatically a direct Punggol bus.

The correct starting point and company are the foundation for a reliable guide. Only after both are clear should the article recommend what to visit along the route.

Yio Chu Kang and Nanyang Polytechnic: a journey for actual education events

Service 72 begins at 55509 Yio Chu Kang Int, near Yio Chu Kang MRT (NS15). It then calls at two Nanyang Polytechnic-related stops, 55329 and 54351, along different roads before turning onto Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5. These are useful public transport references for students, staff and people attending approved campus events.

An open house at Nanyang Polytechnic can be a genuine learning opportunity for a student deciding on a diploma pathway. But a campus is not a public playground. The correct visiting arrangement depends on a specific event, registration, gate and building. Check the polytechnic’s own current programme rather than merely going to the nearest bus stop and looking for an open classroom.

A meaningful educational visit should focus on questions: what is taught, what entry requirements apply, what student support is available, and which progression routes may be possible? If a course’s entry details change, the official admission page is authoritative. Do not make promises based on an old timetable or generic career article.

The bus is part of the trip, not the whole plan. A parent accompanying a teenager may need time to find the actual event registration point and reach a building across the campus. A student using a mobility aid may need a particular accessible entrance, which the bus shelter name cannot establish.

After the visit, choose the suitable return or onward route, whether that is a Yio Chu Kang-bound bus, the North South Line or another connection. A good campus visit is one that provides verified information, not a hurried attempt to photograph every building.

ITE College Central: a named stop with a meaningful short-trip variant

From Nanyang Polytechnic, the Tampines-bound bus calls at 54481 ITE Coll Ctrl. The institution is ITE College Central at 2 Ang Mo Kio Drive. This is a useful transport link for registered visitors, students, parents and staff. A person attending an authorised admissions event should verify the date and entrance and should not assume unrestricted access to laboratories or workshops.

This destination is also where the short variant 72B finishes. SimplyGo’s short-trip page lists a route from Yio Chu Kang Int (55509) via Nanyang Polytechnic to ITE Coll Ctrl (54481). Someone hoping to continue all the way to Hougang or Tampines must not board 72B expecting the full 72 route.

The educational theme is different from an ordinary shopping outing. An ITE course event may involve demonstrations, workshops or public information sessions, but only where the organiser permits visitors. A stop at the gate does not guarantee a programme is running or that a child can join a practical activity without registration.

If the appointment is time-specific, allow the full walking leg after alighting and a buffer for traffic. A public bus is not an appointment guarantee. If the event is postponed or the venue has moved inside the campus, use the institution’s current instructions to revise the trip.

For a shorter journey, 72B could be useful when it is operating and you need exactly this early corridor. For a family planning a Tampines outing, however, the correct vehicle is the full 72 or another suitable service. The suffix has a real operational meaning.

Ang Mo Kio Linear Park: a green corridor with an important accessibility exception

Service 72 stops at 66461 Ang Mo Kio Linear Pk on the Yio Chu Kang-to-Tampines journey and 66459 Opp Ang Mo Kio Linear Pk in the reverse direction. NParks describes the park as a green strip along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, providing a landscaped connection between housing and industrial areas. It can be a short, useful nature break rather than a major forest trek.

A parent could take a child on a short observation walk to compare trees, planted areas and surrounding land uses. Why is a linear park different from a large reservoir park? How does a path connect homes and workplaces? Such questions can make a small local outing informative without inventing attractions that are not there.

Accessibility caveat: NParks identifies an entrance associated with the Aft Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2 stop as not wheelchair accessible. A person requiring an accessible route should select another verified entrance, check the road crossing and consider the full walk from the bus stop before travelling.

North-South Corridor construction has also affected some park connector access around Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5. A map from an earlier year may show a through path now diverted. Follow current public signs and avoid work zones; a long transport route does not make a closed pedestrian path safe.

Choose a turning point suitable for the group, bring water and keep the park walk optional if the weather is poor. A successful visit is a short, safe public-space experience, not a requirement to cover the entire park.

Hougang 1 and Hougang Central: two different useful places on the route

After Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, the route turns via Yio Chu Kang Road into Hougang Avenue 9, serving 64491 Hougang 1. This is a neighbourhood shopping reference and a reasonable destination for food or a small errand. It should not be confused with Hougang Mall at Hougang Avenue 10 or with Hougang Central Interchange.

The route later reaches Hougang Central on a roadside stop. In the Yio Chu Kang-to-Tampines direction, the relevant listed stop is 64549 Opp Hougang Ctrl Int. On the returning Tampines-to-Yio Chu Kang journey, the listed stop is 64541 Hougang Ctrl Int. The route does not turn into the 64009 interchange terminal as one of its endpoints.

This is a detail that can save a lot of confusion. A visitor standing in the boarding hall at Hougang Bus Interchange might wait for 72 as though it originates there. The actual route uses the surrounding road. Confirm the roadside pole and the service’s displayed destination rather than relying on the shared name.

For a family with children, a local errand and a meal can be the complete purpose of the trip. Compare the nearby shops, consider the walking and return and avoid adding a distant attraction simply because the bus continues across the northeast.

Someone attending Hougang Polyclinic or another scheduled service should use the relevant stop and appointment entrance; healthcare sites are not leisure attractions. If the person may be tired after an appointment, choose the most comfortable legal crossing and way home, not necessarily the route with the fewest kilometres.

Old Tampines Road and Greenwich: normal neighbourhood access deserves honest writing

The bus leaves Hougang Central through Upper Serangoon Road and Hougang Avenue 3, then uses Tampines Road. Some stops reference Defu, Greenwich, Old Tampines Road and industrial buildings. These are important to residents and employees, but not every one is a tourist attraction or a public place to explore.

The outward route includes a stop near Greenwich Drive, while the reverse direction includes 64151 Aft Greenwich Dr. Use the actual travel direction and stop code for the intended business or residence. A place name on a map can cover multiple roads and pedestrian approaches.

A family with a student interested in urban planning could observe the contrast between older neighbourhood roads, industrial edges and newer housing. Keep the learning to public sidewalks and legitimate events; do not enter factories, construction sites, dormitories or security-controlled workplaces.

This section illustrates why detailed route writing matters. It is tempting to put ‘Greenwich’ in a headline and imply a shopping complex is immediately at the stop. In fact, the road name, actual building entrance and safe crossing must be verified separately.

If the destination is a shop, confirm its current location and hours. A small business can relocate without the bus route changing. Travel time also varies with road traffic, and a published frequency cannot promise an exact arrival at every sheltered stop.

Tampines industrial roads: they are not the same as IKEA, EXPO or Changi Airport

As Bus 72 approaches Tampines, it travels through the industrial side of Tampines Road and Tampines Avenue 10 before returning to residential streets near Tampines Avenue 9. The operator’s route includes names such as Tampines Dormitory and other industrial-road references. These are useful for workers with a legitimate destination, not public visitor attractions by default.

In particular, Service 72 is not a direct bus to IKEA Tampines’s named stop, Singapore EXPO or the Changi Airport passenger terminals. Those have different appropriate routes and last-mile connections. A bus merely travelling near Tampines industrial areas does not automatically reach the entrance to every large retailer or event facility.

Someone going to a workplace should check the authorised entrance and pedestrian route; a factory or dormitory is not a place to wander into for sightseeing. For a school event, follow the organiser’s directions rather than treating a nearby bus stop as unrestricted access.

The road layout includes large junctions, vehicle entrances and industrial areas that can be less pedestrian-friendly than the sheltered corridors around a regional mall. Use designated crossings and do not take shortcuts through loading areas.

For people who only want a shopping trip, stay on until the Tampines town centre or compare a different bus and MRT option. The destination’s actual address should decide the service, not a broad district name.

Tampines town centre: finish with an easy errand or a rail connection

The Yio Chu Kang-to-Tampines route ends at 75009 Tampines Int. This provides access to Tampines MRT, the East–West and Downtown Lines, and the surrounding public shopping and food precinct. It is a clear endpoint for someone who wants one meal, a planned errand or an onward train connection.

The stop 75121 Opp Darul Ghufran Mque appears just before the interchange. This is a public roadside landmark; a mosque’s visiting rules and event access are separate from a bus route. If your purpose is the place of worship, check the correct entrance and any visitor requirements directly.

The mall and rail entrances around Tampines Central are not all in one location. If meeting another person, choose a named shop or station exit rather than the vague phrase ‘at Tampines’. A traveller with a pram or luggage may prefer a specific accessible route, which should be checked.

On the return trip towards Yio Chu Kang, Bus 72 takes a different sequence through Tampines Avenue 5, 6, 9 and 10 and uses 64541 Hougang Ctrl Int on the way north. Read the display and stops before boarding, especially if you are going only to a residential section rather than the final interchange.

A direct train may be simpler for a journey between some MRT stations. Service 72’s distinctive value is the intermediate street network, not an automatic promise of the quickest cross-town travel.

72A and 72B: when the letters matter more than the arrival countdown

SimplyGo publishes 72A as a short trip from 55509 Yio Chu Kang Int to 64549 Opp Hougang Ctrl Int during weekday mornings. It does not continue to Tampines. The end point is a roadside Hougang Central stop, not the full bus service’s Tampines terminal.

72B is shorter still. It starts at Yio Chu Kang Interchange and finishes at 54481 ITE Coll Ctrl. A commuter going only to the ITE/Nanyang Polytechnic corridor may find it useful when scheduled, but it is the wrong service for a visit to Hougang 1 or Tampines.

Because the full route transferred from SBS Transit to Go-Ahead in July 2026, some public databases may still display the short working pages under an old operator label. Use the current full-route operator and the actual short-trip destinations on the bus display. Do not invent weekend availability from a weekday-only snapshot.

The most reliable boarding question is: does this particular bus reach my destination stop? It is not enough to see ’72’ at the start of the number or a short waiting time. A service with an extra letter can be operationally different.

If an unsuitable short-trip vehicle has already been boarded, alight at a legal stop and plan a proper connection. Do not expect it to continue beyond its published endpoint, and never cross unsafely to chase the full bus.

A more useful way to plan the day: one purpose and a return

If you want education information, confirm the ITE or NYP public event first. If you want a green walk, choose a suitable Ang Mo Kio Linear Park entrance and current open path. If you want food and shopping, Hougang 1 or Tampines Central can be enough. Those are distinct outings with different preparation.

Before departure, write down the exact address, stop code and side of the road. A child can help read the station name, but an adult should remain responsible for safe crossing and transport decisions. A route map is most valuable when connected with the actual pedestrian entrance.

For wheelchair users and people with mobility limitations, the chain includes accessible boarding, the bus kerb, a crossing, a lift and the destination entrance. If any part is uncertain, choose a verified alternative; a generic ‘wheelchair accessible’ label does not prove every park-side approach is usable.

Use current live arrivals and SimplyGo fare rules rather than promising a fixed waiting time or price for everyone. The day, concessions and distance matter. An estimated trip duration can vary with traffic around Hougang and Tampines.

A meaningful bus outing does not have to cover every place on the line. A short successful visit followed by a comfortable return is more useful than an overfull itinerary.

Three outings that are worth the journey

Education open house at NYP or ITE College Central

Choose an actual public event, confirm the correct campus and visitor gate, then travel from Yio Chu Kang or another suitable stop to 55329/54351 for NYP or 54481 for ITE. If the bus is marked 72B, remember it ends at the ITE stop; use full 72 if travelling further.

A short Ang Mo Kio Linear Park visit

Use 66461 Ang Mo Kio Linear Pk in the Yio Chu Kang-to-Tampines direction, choose a suitable open entrance using NParks, observe a public section and return from a properly checked opposite-direction bus stop. Observe construction diversion and accessibility notices.

Hougang 1 or Tampines Central shopping

Choose only one destination: 64491 Hougang 1 for a neighbourhood meal/errand or 75009 Tampines Int for regional mall and MRT access. Compare road-side stops and the actual return journey, without promising that the whole route is fastest.

Common wrong assumptions and fixes

  • Outdated operator: Service 72 transferred to Go-Ahead on 19 July 2026; older SBS Transit labels may linger.
  • Hougang Interchange confusion: 72 calls at nearby roadside stops 64549 and 64541, not a terminal berth inside 64009.
  • 72A/72B short trips: 72A ends near Hougang Central; 72B at ITE College Central. Neither reaches Tampines.
  • Wrong education institution: Nanyang Polytechnic and ITE College Central are separate campuses and visitor entrances.
  • Linear Park access: one entrance is not wheelchair-accessible and nearby connector works may divert paths.
  • Wrong Tampines attraction: the bus ends at Tampines town centre, not Changi Airport, IKEA or Singapore EXPO.
  • Industrial security: workplace and dormitory stops do not authorise public entry.
  • Last-bus error: terminal departure timings are not last arrivals at Hougang or other intermediate stops.
