Bus Guide | Where to Go, What to Do | Interesting Places Go-Ahead Singapore Bus Service 119 Goes To

Bus passengers alighting at Punggol Temporary Bus Terminal while one commuter looks at a phone.

Where does Go-Ahead Singapore Bus Service 119 go, and what interesting places can you visit? Service 119 is a circular route from Punggol Bus Interchange via Sengkang, Hougang Avenue 8, Punggol Park in Hougang and Kovan MRT before returning through Sengkang to Punggol. It works well for a family nature outing, a short food stop or connecting neighbourhoods that do not sit directly on the North East Line.

This Bus Guide explains the route’s best practical stops, including Sengkang MRT, Bakau and Kangkar LRT, Punggol Park and Kovan. It separates stops from the places you might actually want to visit. A bus stop near the park is not a promise that you have arrived at the lakeside, and Kovan MRT is not the same destination as NEX at Serangoon.

The detail most worth remembering is the word loop. There is no separate Kovan terminus where you board a new 119 home. You travel around a circuit through Hougang and Kovan, and the order of the stops determines whether you are heading away from or back towards Punggol. Check the published list and live arrivals rather than assuming the nearest 119 stop is the fastest return.

Start here: where this service really goes

Go-Ahead Service 119 begins and ends at Punggol Int (65009). Its outward sequence passes Sengkang General Hospital and Sengkang MRT, Kangkar LRT, 64079 Punggol Pk, Kovan MRT Exit C and Kovan Hub, then turns back by Upper Serangoon Road, 64071 Opp Punggol Pk, Sengkang MRT and Punggol. The published loop is approximately 18.3 km long.

Verified route facts, checked 31 October 2026

  • Operator: Go-Ahead Singapore.
  • Start and finish: Punggol Interchange (65009) near NE17.
  • Published first/last from Punggol: 5am–11.30pm weekdays, 5.05am–11.30pm Saturdays, 5.50am–11.30pm Sundays/public holidays.
  • Route type: a loop via Sengkang and Hougang/Kovan; the route does not finish at Kovan.
  • Punggol Park: lies in Hougang at Hougang Avenues 8 and 10, even though the bus starts in the town of Punggol.
  • Rail connections: Sengkang MRT/LRT, Bakau and Kangkar LRT, Kovan MRT.
  • Useful visitor choice: choose a small park walk or Kovan food stop; the whole 18.3 km circuit need not become a compulsory tour.

Where to alight: actual bus stops beside useful places

Bus stop codes below are from the published service sequence. A stop near a destination is not its entrance. Check the pedestrian route, safe crossing, opening arrangements, accessible access and the stop on the other side for your return.

Why Bus 119 is a loop and why that changes the return journey

Many familiar Singapore buses connect one interchange with another. Service 119 is different: Go-Ahead labels its route Punggol Int (Loop). The bus heads out through Sengkang, reaches the Hougang and Kovan area, then returns via different stop poles to Sengkang and Punggol. If you read a route diagram without the stop sequence, you might wrongly assume it offers two equally direct directions to every place.

The published 18.3 km route includes many intermediate residential stops. The reason a bus still matters beside the MRT is that people do not all live in station entrances. A resident near Sengkang East Way may find a convenient Bus 119 stop on a road; a resident of Punggol near the North East Line may prefer rail for a journey to Kovan station.

A route with a similar start and end does not tell you how long the remaining ride will take from the stop you are standing at. If you have just visited Kovan, the continuing Bus 119 goes through Upper Serangoon Road, Hougang and Sengkang on its way back. That may suit some passengers and be inefficient for others.

For a family outing, save the alighting stop code, draw the order of the next four or five stops and decide whether a different bus or MRT option is better for the return. Understanding the full circuit gives more control than memorising only ‘Bus 119 goes to Kovan’.

Sengkang MRT: useful for a transfer, with a subtle change in stop code

On the Punggol-to-Kovan leg, Service 119 serves 67401 Opp Sengkang Stn/Blk 260A. On its return journey it serves 67409 Sengkang Stn. These are a reminder that ‘Sengkang MRT’ in conversation can represent different bus shelters, even when they serve the same railway system.

Sengkang is where the North East Line and the Sengkang LRT connect. That makes it useful for a passenger who wants to change modes, meet someone, buy food or head to the town centre. But a bus stop near the MRT station is not identical to Sengkang Interchange (67009), and 119’s published stop list does not include that terminal code.

For someone intending to visit Compass One or Sengkang Public Library, inspect the pedestrian route from the actual 119 stop. A local bus that passes the station area can still require more walking than a different service entering Sengkang Bus Interchange. The best choice depends on where you board and whether you need step-free access.

If you travel with young children, practise identifying the station sign, bus pole code and crossing point. The learning goal can be simple: distinguish an MRT station, LRT station and bus interchange rather than treating all three as one building.

Sengkang General Hospital: don’t turn a critical journey into sightseeing

Service 119 passes the Sengkang General Hospital corridor and lists 67411 Opp Sengkang General Hosp outward and 67419 Sengkang General Hosp returning. This can make the bus genuinely important to someone attending an appointment or visiting a family member.

Medical trips require a different level of planning from leisure trips. Find the exact clinic or ward, verify hospital access and registration rules, and leave margin for traffic and walking. If urgent emergency care is needed, use appropriate emergency services rather than treating a bus guide as medical advice.

A stop labelled opposite the hospital may require a crossing and a longer approach than a similarly named stop on the other side. For travellers with limited mobility or after a treatment, that difference matters. Check the accessible pedestrian route before departure, and consider a more suitable alternative if necessary.

The presence of a hospital on a bus route is an essential piece of public-service information, but the hospital itself is not an attraction. The useful lesson is accuracy about access, not encouragement to visit without a reason.

Bakau and Kangkar: the local neighbourhood network

The outward Bus 119 route serves 67131 Bakau Stn/Blk 122F and 67151 Kangkar Stn Exit B. They link the bus to Sengkang’s East Loop LRT stations and the surrounding Rivervale neighbourhood. These stops are most useful for residents, students and visitors who have a specific nearby address.

If a friend asks you to visit their block near Kangkar, use the block address and nearest stop rather than choosing an attraction that sounds vaguely related to the neighbourhood. The bus may be a convenient direct option from Punggol, or a train-and-LRT route may be simpler. Compare your actual start and destination.

A child can learn how the East Loop and bus routes overlap. One road may run beside a rail station, but passengers reach them from different entrances. This illustrates why last-mile walking matters even in a town with many transport connections.

Do not imply that a school or residential corridor is a tourist destination. If travelling to a school, follow the school’s visitor rules. If making a casual neighbourhood visit, use public footpaths and respect private residential areas.

Punggol Park in Hougang: the clearest leisure destination on Bus 119

The outbound stop 64079 Punggol Pk puts Service 119 beside the area of Punggol Park. NParks confirms that this park is at the junction of Hougang Avenues 8 and 10, despite the Punggol name. The reverse part of the bus loop serves 64071 Opp Punggol Pk. A first-time visitor should decide which park entrance they want and how to cross safely.

This 16-hectare park is built around a 5-hectare lake and is intended for family leisure. It has walking areas, cycling or skating paths, a playground and a designated dog run. The lake gives a short nature visit a clear focal point: you can watch reflections, birds and changes in the weather without needing a ticket to a special event.

A parent with a Primary school child might bring a small notebook and record three visible features: the lake, a tree and one animal observed from a distance. The educational point is careful observation, not catching wildlife. If you see a water monitor or a bird by the shore, respect its space and avoid feeding it.

NParks permits fishing only in designated spots. Do not assume every place around the water is a fishing platform or that aquatic animals can be released there. The park’s green spaces and facilities are shared resources, and visitors should follow current rules and any temporary closure notices.

A family might plan a modest loop instead of trying to visit every park facility. Younger children may prefer the playground and a short walk, while an older adult may prefer a shaded rest by the lake. A reader using a wheelchair should confirm the specific accessible crossing from the bus stop to the intended park path; broad park accessibility does not prove every approach is step-free.

The distinction between this park and Punggol Waterway Park is more than a naming issue. Punggol Waterway Park lies along Sentul Crescent in the town of Punggol; Punggol Park lies in Hougang. Using the wrong park name in a journey planner can send a family to a completely different town.

Kovan: food, neighbourhood shops and an MRT connection

After Punggol Park and Hougang, Bus 119 reaches 63039 Kovan Stn Exit C and travels through the Kovan Hub area. The North East Line station is at a useful junction of everyday residential, commercial and neighbourhood activity. It is a sensible place for a short meal, household errand or transfer.

Heartland Mall Kovan is located at Block 205 Hougang Street 21, close to Kovan MRT. Its visitor information identifies Exit C as a practical access point, but the precise walk from the bus stop to a particular outlet still needs to be checked. Do not treat an entire shopping area as if it had one door or fixed opening times.

A family can make the Kovan outing simple: choose one supermarket item to buy, have lunch, and consider whether to return by bus or rail. The educational aspect can be a small budget exercise or comparing the trip with an MRT journey from Punggol. No extra paid attraction is required for the trip to be useful.

Kovan is not Serangoon MRT or NEX. They are different stations on the North East Line. Likewise, Kovan Hub is a specific cluster of local services, not proof that every community office is open without appointment. Read the address and service conditions before setting out.

On the return, 119 travels by a different sequence of Upper Serangoon Road stops. If your home is immediately beside an MRT station, the rail link may be preferable. The fact that the same service eventually returns to Punggol does not automatically make it the most direct option.

A common problem: using the wrong side of Punggol Park

From Punggol towards Kovan, 119 stops at 64079 Punggol Pk. On the way back it stops at 64071 Opp Punggol Pk. These may look like a simple opposite-side pair in an app, but you still need to identify the legal crossing and how each shelter connects to the park entrance.

This matters most with prams, mobility aids, children or on rainy evenings. A crossing that looks short on a zoomed-out map may include traffic lights or a detour. Avoid crossing Hougang Avenue 8 away from designated facilities in order to catch a bus that is already approaching.

If you miss a bus or discover that the park exit is not the one you planned, check live arrivals at the actual stop. Do not assume that walking to another shelter will help. A different bus service or train transfer may offer a safer and easier return.

The same principle applies to Sengkang station and the hospital. A transport guide works best when both the arrival and the repair route are visible before you leave home.

Bus 119 compared with Bus 82 and Bus 62

The three services overlap some northeast districts, but they do not follow identical loops. 119 runs Punggol–Sengkang–Hougang/Punggol Park–Kovan–Sengkang–Punggol. 82 runs Punggol through Hougang and Kovan to Serangoon and back. 62 is a longer Punggol loop via Hougang, Tai Seng, Aljunied and Geylang Road.

If you want Punggol Park, both 119 and 62 have published stops near it, but their approach from Punggol and their subsequent stop order differ. Which is quicker depends on where you board and the actual waiting time. If you want NEX at Serangoon, do not assume 119 goes there just because it reaches Kovan; the route does not continue to Serangoon MRT.

Families should first decide the activity, then compare the route choices. Taking the same bus number both ways may not be necessary or optimal. A short bus trip to a park and a train home can be a perfectly sensible plan.

Avoid treating bus frequency as an exact arrival guarantee. Service information is useful, but real-time traffic, diversions and missed connections require some flexibility. The best outing combines a clear purpose with a workable return option.

Three realistic ways to use this bus for a good outing

Lake and playground in Hougang

Start at Punggol Interchange 65009, take 119 past Sengkang and alight at 64079 Punggol Pk. Check the nearest entrance, enjoy a manageable nature walk, and use the correct 64071 return stop or another suitable route after confirming safe crossings.

Kovan shopping and an MRT return

Board Service 119 towards Kovan, alight at 63039 Kovan Stn Exit C and walk to your chosen shop or meal in the Kovan area. Compare remaining Bus 119 loop travel with a North East Line journey back to Punggol before committing to the return.

Sengkang transport-learning outing

Use the outward 67401 Opp Sengkang Stn/Blk 260A stop to learn how bus, MRT and LRT networks meet. Visit a permitted public town-centre area and return via the most appropriate service, noting that 67409 Sengkang Stn is a different stop on the loop.

Common mistakes, safety and route repairs

  • Wrong park town: Punggol Park is in Hougang; Punggol Waterway Park is in Punggol town.
  • Wrong side of the park: 64079 Punggol Pk outward and 64071 Opp Punggol Pk returning are different codes.
  • Assuming Kovan is Serangoon: Bus 119 reaches Kovan MRT but not the Serangoon MRT/NEX stop.
  • Wrong Sengkang station stop: 67401 is outward; 67409 is on the return portion.
  • Expecting a Kovan terminus: 119 is a loop, and the continuing journey may take longer than an MRT trip.
  • Wildlife disturbance: Stay on park paths and do not feed or release wildlife or fish outside designated spots.
  • Healthcare access error: Hospital stops need a specific clinic/ward entrance and a safe crossing.
  • Unverified arrival: Operator first and last bus times at Punggol do not guarantee times at Kovan.
